Expert 4269 | Subject: RE: Beer Drinker Appreciation Society - Open Cassady - 2012-12-22 9:19 PM David, You had me at hello. Seriously I am in the same boat you were in last year. I weigh 299 lbs. I gained 24lbs after getting injured in IMLP last year and DNF'd. I took 4 months off while seeing the doctor and now that I am cleared to work out I find that I have set myself up for more work. First a little about myself, My name is Doug Cassady. I just turned 43. I have been married for over 20 years and have a fantastic supportive wife. I have a 12 year old son and I have a job that I enjoy. I have always been an athlete, just fat. I have completed 9 marathons, my PR 5:16. All have been run at 275 or more. I have a busy schedule this year and see that we are both racing Quassy. I struggle with my weight. Never have found success in getting and keeping it off. Was thinking you have had some great success and someone who can assist me while keeping it fun and someone who knows about training. As for beers, I have drank a majority of them. My favorite tend to be the darker, heavier beers but after 5 years in the Marine Corps I will drink anything. It seems the older I get the more I'm willing to pay beer. In my youth the best beer was free and the 2nd best was whatever was cheapest. Celebrating success with the liquid gold at the end of a race is what i look forward too. In Ironman LP I will definately be at the brewery celebrating a long time goal. Look forward to working with you. Really impressed by your marathon total! Doug Doug - Damn glad to have you. Your marathon total at that weight its really impressive! I'm sorry to hear about IMLP but I would imagine that when you enter your next IM and more importantly complete it, you will more fit and more knowledgable. I totally agree with you about the willingness to spend more money on quality beer. When I think back to what I was drinking in college - I am almost ashamed. Now, since every calorie counts, why waste them and more importantly your money on crappy beer. Plus, the better the beer, the more it motivates you to get your workouts in... As for weight loss - I'm more than happy to work with you. But the fact is that a supportive group is one of the most important parts of any one's weight loss journey. Having a supportive wife is huge, but I know that if the members of this group support you as much as my mentor group supported me last year, you will really have an advantage in your weightloss journey. PS - Not sure about the marathon total. I've run 1... Hoping to do 2 this year. Please hold me accountable. |

Expert 4269 | Subject: RE: Beer Drinker Appreciation Society - Open Lenny - This is the year when you will complete a triathlon! Make working out a priority, stay connected to this mentor group, and enlist the help of your wife and friends and I promise you it will happen. The fact that your wife loves to run is huge. When the baby comes - you'll need to figure out who will watch the baby while the other works out. Better yet, buy a jogging stroller and take the bambino out for a run. Not only will you be working out but you'll also be earning tons of brownie points by giving your wife some down time. I too am a hop head - but we'll need to talk about fruit beers. There are a lot of bad fruit beers (I just had a Peche lambic by Lindemens - and that was awful!), but I think there are some decent one out there. Good luck to you this year! Expert 4269 | Subject: RE: Beer Drinker Appreciation Society - Open kevinbe - 2012-12-23 11:25 AM Kim and Jared, great goals. Jared, It's good to go into those mass eating venues with a plan. I find If I don't, I end up having everyone at the venue playing the game of feeding me all the leftovers in the dish so they don't have to take any home, and I play right along with them. You might as well just role me out to my car at the end of it. Kim, What's going on with the leg, is it just a nagging thing, or more serious? I ask because your body may be trying to tell you something to avoid a more serious injury. The family and I are going to the Y today and my wife and I are going to get a spin bike workout in and I'm going to do a few laps in the pool, kinda an off day for my legs. I've found if your legs are tired or sore from running, taking a day to swim and cycle can be a good way to get a workout in while resting your running legs. Kevin Kevin and DH - thanks for the kind words. But I wanted to copy Kevin's post because it's what we are all going to need to do in order for the group to support everyone to the maximum. The fact is - you aren't accountable to me - you are accountible to each other. The more support you give to each other, the more you cheer each other on - the more each member will reach out to you and help you as you put in the work. It's those mutual connections that make it impossible to give up because you aren't just giving up on yourself but you are letting the rest of the team down. So make it a goal to 1) update us each day on your progress or challenges, 2) write at least 1 supportive not to a member of the BDAS! |

Expert 1662 Spokane, WA | Subject: RE: Beer Drinker Appreciation Society - Open mirthfuldragon - 2012-12-23 12:46 PM What do you think of MyFitnessPal? I have been considering it but I get frustrated when I can't find the foods I'm eating quickly and then I just give up. How does it do on recipes? I've been using MFP for about two years now, and it's great. The food database is big enough, and if I can't find something or the reasonable equivalent, it's easy to add things in. The recipe builder works well, too. I got in a nice 1:40 spin session in this morning. Tomorrow it's back to the weights and the run. As in an hour and forty minutes. Wow, that's pretty bad-a$$. I'm now inspired, my spin bike sessions are like 45-50 minutes tops. Next week, my new goal is to do over an hour on the thing. Thanks for the motivation. |

Expert 4269 | Subject: RE: Beer Drinker Appreciation Society - Open Yakhead - 2012-12-23 12:05 PM Hey I make and drink beer. Is there a open spot for me? Yakhead / Ian Hit my all time high weight of 245 lbs and want to get back to under to 190-200 lbs. I have always wanted to do a sprint, and it is on my bucket list of things to do and loose weight. So I rejoined the beginner triathlete again (I used to log my bike rides on here for MS150 bike rides years ago). I like 2xIPA and octoberfests. my current training is going to start after christmas in 2 days so I was looking for a group to join. I ride bike well, need to swim better, and learn how to like running.
Ian - Welcome back to BT. Kudos on making a commitment to losing weight. Doing tris will really help with your diet - but it will also make you happier and healthier (that was my mantra last year!). Congrats on doing the MS150. I did one of the 75's a few years back - and my hats off to you for pulling off the double. Talk to DH/Darren about developing a love for running. I love to run but he is an animal when it comes to pounding the pavement! Good luck to you on starting your training - what races do you have planned for the year? Dave |

Since I plan on indulging tomorrow evening at our friends place, I am thinking a Xmas Eve morning run is in order.... is there a formula for distance ran = beverages allowed ? if so what would four Boreal Rouge beers and one glass of Lagavulin 18yr equal in Km's? |

Extreme Veteran 2098 Alberta | Subject: RE: Beer Drinker Appreciation Society - Open Okay here is my story. Joined a 6 week weight loss challenge with family and friends in May of 2009...won that but decided to keep going. Dropped around 90lbs. Needed something to stay motivated so I entered a sprint triathlon in June of 2010. Liked it so much I did 1 more sprint and 2 olympics. 2012 did a oly and a sprint and a half marathon. Swim: probably my strongest even though it doesn't feel like it. Bike: Lots of room for improvement. Run:did I mention I hate running?? Not the best but not the worst. I am looking for big improvements in my bike and run this year. Time will tell. Currently have my 10 yr old son doing triathlons, my wife and 5 yr old daughter are doing one this year. I love beer and beer loves me! |

New user 31 | Subject: RE: Beer Drinker Appreciation Society - Open Hello Everyone!! I would love to be in this group. There is nothing like support and accountability from others to keep me on task! Name: Elizabeth Story: I used to run x-country and track about 25 years ago and 20 pounds lighter. :/ I have only recently started exercising regularly again. It was a struggle getting used to the new limits of my body. But the running is coming back and I have been relatively injury free by taking it slow. I never really thought that a triathlon would be something I was interested in until I realized that I had to cross train if I was going to be able to keep running. So I dusted off my bike and took swim lessons over the summer. I have never been much of a swimmer, but I am excited to say that I have made some good progress. I figured out bilateral breathing, and I am no longer so freaked out about getting to the other side of the pool, that I can relax and enjoy what I am doing. At any rate, I figured if I am swimming, bicycling, and running, there really is no reason not to look into doing a tri (except that I have heard that they are addictive!) Some addictions are worth risking! I've been lurking around this site, MFP forums, and other corners of the interebs looking for much information as possible - would love advice and support and will try to provide the same! Family Status. live with my sweetheart of 15 years Current Training: Run 2X, Bike 2X, Swim 2X with one day rest. This Year's races: 5K in November, 5K in December 2013 races: HITS Napa Valley Sprint (April 2013) is the only one I have signed up for so far. Weight Goal: I would love to drop about 10 pounds, but this has not been an active priority for me lately. |

New user 31 | Subject: RE: Beer Drinker Appreciation Society - Open Hello Everyone! Happy Sunday! GOALS FOR THE WEEK SWIM: Well, I am kind of out of luck for swimming this week. The community pool I go to is closed. I have heard that there is one in the next town over that opens on the 27th I am going to have to confirm that is the case. If this is the case I can get in at least one swim. RUN: tweeked a hip flexor muscle the beginning of last week. I rested a couple of days, but came back too soon. I am going to take a couple of days off running for good measure this time. BIKE: Looks like this will be my focus for the week. Should be spotty weather most of the week. I am going to set up the trainer for today. I may be able to get a couple of outdoor rides in around the rain (Monday, Thursday, and Friday look best) Indoor workout 40 min. Outdoor 6 miles – extra hill repeat DIET: Time to get back in the habit of tracking my calories. BEER: This should be one of the goals, right? Well, I thinking a happy hour on Friday is in order if I nail the above. Local sports bar carries a local amber that I am fond of: Napa Smith I feel I have to support breweries since wine is the preferred beverage around these parts. Hope everyone has a fantastic week! |

New user 6 | Subject: RE: Beer Drinker Appreciation Society - Open I would like to join!Greetings from Vermont - not quite the frozen tundra of Canada but almost as good.I am a professional musician with many years of beer drinking under my belt - literally and figuratively. I have never been all that athletically inclined, although I do hold a 4th degree black belt in shaolin kempo karate, and used to run a bit for fun when I was younger. Now, at 47 I have decided that it is is time to fight back against the encroaching bulge that grows a little each year. Last year I topped out at 220, and made some modest adjustments to my diet and exercise habits and dropped some weight. However, between school teaching and concerts, my schedule would always overtake the best of intentions and slowly I would gain the weight back. I started running this past August using the C25K app on my iPhone, and then upgraded to the 10K app as I got better. I made it my goal to run three times weekly despite rain, sleet, ... you know the rest. I am now up to six miles three times weekly. So as not to interfere with my performing schedule I get up at 4:30 to run, and I've stayed true to the schedule every week since August. I've run a couple of 5K events, and now that I run 10K (somewhat) comfortably I want to do more, and thought a triathlon would be just the thing. I'm just over 200 pounds now and want to be in the 180s if possible, ideally in the 170s. Only problem is, it's not like I can do a whole lot of biking or swimming at the moment. But there is a 70.3 in NH next August that I could be ready for if I start now. Not afraid of the swimming or biking as I've always done lots of each recreationally. But all three? We'll have to see - certainly the threat of having to drink a Coors Light would shave an hour off my time. I'm a fan of richer beers, malty with a bit of zing to them. As long as there is some craft behind the brew, I will try almost anything. Not a fan of fruit in beer - that's why God made cereal. All the best and happy holidays to everyone. Expert 4269 | Subject: RE: Beer Drinker Appreciation Society - Open bobddsmd - 2012-12-23 12:17 PM DQ,
I think I need the groups help. Despite growing up in Canada (now living in Dallas) I am losing my ability to enjoy drinking beer! I know that is a problem. Even fruity beers. Name: Bobby Story: Finishing my first year of tri with three sprints and on half marathon. I hated running until this year and found 3 milers at the end of sprints to be pretty brutal. Doing the HM was an incredible experience and I absolutely loved it. Previous to this I had turned 40, lost 85lbs by eating better and moving more (now 205lbs). I need to stay motivated. Family status: Married for 14 years with three boys (6,8,12) Current training: custom BT plan and online coach. This years races: Three sprints. Fantastic experiences! 2013 races: I have signed up for another HM in March and a HIM in Galveston in April. Beer preference: I like it all. My "problem" is that I lack the motivation to have more than 1-2 at a time. I am out in the country this weekend for the holiday so I will try to improve my situation. I have a great sampler pack that was a gift and I am going to tear into it as soon as I finish typing. Weight loss: 85lbs. Losing weight is a drag. I feel so much better without the weight. What do I need? Motivation to stay in the game. I find that races are what I need to give me the motivation to stay on the plan. I very much ramped up my running (for a non-runner) for my HM and I was glad I completed it injury free. My pace is very slow with a run/walk of 4:1 for my long runs. I look forward to the adventure! Bobby Bobby - Congrats on the fantastic year and for losing all that weight. When you think of 85 pounds in terms of butter - that's 340 sticks of butter lost...most impressive. Glad you are joining the group because I could really use your help. I've lost the same amount of weight as you did and I've been struggling to stay on track. I took a few weeks off in November and December and found myself sneaking back into the bad habits that got me in trouble in the first place - not exercising and eating way to much. Like you, I'm motivated by big goals like races, and the off season as been tough. Sound familiar? Hope so, because I'd love some mutual accountibility. Also love your gusto for beer (even fruity beers - hear that Kevin and Thor!! You'll fit in well here. Good Luck! Dave |

If you'll have me I would like to start Drinking...errr...I mean training with you! NAME: Justin STORY: Never have I been super athletic, played some sports in my teens, did some physical activities with the Royal Canadian Air Cadet program here in Canada. But I have never really been 'In Shape'. This is my third time being mentored I believe and I really enjoy the 'esprit de corp' that comes from this program. Became a new Dad, and turned 30 in 2012...it has made me realize that if I don't get serious with this it will have a serious impact on my family. FAMILY STATUS: Married for a year and half now to my beautiful and much fitter wife, Jennifer. We welcomed an amazing little lady into our lives this year and her name is Dorothy, she is 6 months old now and is pretty much all we think about! CURRENT TRAINING: Really have to get back into the SBR! things have fallen off quite a bit since the birth of my daughter. Just recently started Crossfit, because a friend got me a gift certificate for my birthday. I have been really enjoying it and hope to keep at it maybe 2X a week to build strength. THIS YEAR'S RACES: I did my first Tri this past year. In a tiny little community called Wawa in Northern Ontario, Canada. They called it a sprint but I am not even sure they measured the swim. In any case I really enjoyed it. I also did our local half marathon that I didn't train nearly enough for. It kicked my !! but I finished in 2:38. 2013 RACES: No races registered for as of yet, but ideally I would like to do a Sprint early on, an OLY midway, and a Half-Iron towards the end of the season. Also I have semi-committed to a couple half marathons with friends. BEER PREFERENCE: well....it has to be wet...haha... really I will try anything, and I like sampling anything I can get my hands on. My dream job would be owner/brewmaster of a microbrewery/B'n'B/organic farm in my home province of Prince Edward Island on the east coast of Canada. My favorite beer has to be Guinness on tap, and I really like stouts. But I honestly do enjoy all beers. There is a great brewery here called ' Flying Monkeys Brewery ' and they have a great one called 'Hoptical Illusion'...ok I better stop because I enjoy talking about different beers almost as much as I like to taste them WEIGHT LOSS: This is priority for me, I'm 240 at 6 Feet tall. I would like to be under 200 by my Daughters first birthday, in June, and end game is around 175 hopefully WHAT WILL MAKE ME A GOOD MENToree: I am a team player and I really enjoy meeting new people and hearing their stories. Very inspirational! Sláinte Welcome to the party, Justin. Had to look up the word Slainte that you ended your post with. The website says its a toast that means health. Do I have it right? Congrats on the bambino. I've got three kids and they're all I talk about too - except for my passion for S/B/R and beer. I commend you on your realization that you need to take your health seriously or else it will have a negative impact on your family. I had the same realization - but putting that realization into reality is tough work. With all the dad's in the group, I'm sure you will have a lot of support in finding that kids/work/life/exercise balance. Also agree with you about Guinness on tap - heavenly stuff! |

Earlier this week, I ate like a pig and enjoyed every minute of it. I've been good the last few days, but I know that I'm going to eat well on Christmas (planning on cooking a beef roast with asperigas and mashed potatoes with peppermint stick icecream and home made chocolate sauce - I'm drooling just thinking about it!) and I'M OK with that... because I promised myself that on December 26 I will get back on the wagon and make better food choices. I've also been exercising more to compensate for all the food - so I've almost been breaking even. Make the most of the holiday - and then get back at it when the holiday is over. |

Expert 4269 | Subject: RE: Beer Drinker Appreciation Society - Open justinfss - 2012-12-23 4:20 PM Well its minus 15 celcius here, and there is about 2 meters of snow outside my door...but all you go-getters are already making me feel lazy. Justin - Lagavulin 18 is so good that it almost shouldn't count... unfortunately it and the Boreal does. (I tried Boreal this summer on a canadian beer tour and liked it). Here is how I do the math - 30 minute jog = 2 beers (you Candians and your kilometers... So looks like you'll need to put in about 75 minutes to drink guilt free.) It will be worth it! |
