Suzy Shain - Madison WI

My Story:
Started endurance sports at the age of 40 after seeing the first IM WI in Madison in '02. I knew one day I wanted to do the race as a way to get over my fear of water. Since I didn't know how to swim and rarely biked I turned to running and did 12 marathons before deciding to tackle the limiter holding me back from triathlon--swimming.   Support from friends, many lessons and some deep soul searching got me to my first super sprint in '08.  Since then I've done IM WI in '10/'11/'12 and plan to do it in '13.  IM is my favorite distance.  I love to run and I have really learned to like the bike.  I just started doing TRX and have really embraced it as a way to get a stronger core.

Family: Married for 23 years to Paul,  no kids, but we do have an awesome Cockapoo, Cooper.

'13 Races/Goals:  "A" race is IM WI #4 where I hope to hit 12:XX after a bad '12 and the Oakland marathon where I would like to achieve BQ #4 and break my marathon PR set in '07.  Will add a few more short distance tris in there too.

Weight:  I'm not looking to lose weight, but i do have to watch it carefully.  At 4'10"  and 102lbs it is very easy for me to put on the lbs.

What I need to work on: Maintaining a positive frame of mind if one of my disciplines isn't improving as much as I would like. This is usually swimming.

Other Tidbits: I live on the IM MOO bike course just past the ugliest hill of them all.

What is TRX?

Hi Anne-Marie

Rather than explain it, take a look at this video.  It is actually the location where I take the classes and gives you a general sense of the core exercises we go through using the suspension trainer and our own body weight.  I am not a class person at all.  I do 100% of my SBR training alone (except OWS), but for some reason this has me hooked.  I can tell you in the 8 weeks that I have done it, I am significantly stronger and parts of me look a little better Wink!

WOW, that video is a lot more intense than what I saw at the gym with the only TRX certified trainer there....Looks fun but incredibly challenging.

I think I will try to find a TRX program around me or maybe order the home version!

My advice is to look around for a really good instructor.  The TRX at my gym is nothing compared to this class and it is all because of an instructor who shows you the moves and motivates the heck out of you in class.  For what it is worth, I do have a TRX for travel.  It's ok in a pinch, but I think learning the moves in a class is a key first step.  Good luck finding one.  It's fun!

Hi Tammy, welcome aboard.  Starting off right in a mentor group and learning about the sport.  Do you have a race you want to shoot for as a goal this year?  A great way to learn more is to volunteer at a small race.

Judi,  I have not chosen a race to work towards. I am not sure how long I will need to train beforehand. I like the idea of volunteering at one, as I have never been. That will give me some idea what to expect.

Finished in 14hr32min, just over an hour ahead of my husband (not that that's the most important thing, but you know...)

It may not be the MOST important thing, but it's not exactly unimportant either, you know?  You've now got bragging rights till next time.  You just have to find ways to casually throw it into the conversation every once in a while.  Wink

The great thing about it is that I don't need to.  All of our friends in the tri club are quite happy to remind him often enough that I never need to say a word.

However, it has made him more determined to improve this year.  As he has pointed out, I basically had as close to a perfect race as I could, so where he just has to improve on his execution, I'm actually going to have to be fitter/faster to improve on my time.

January goal is simply consistency.  To get started I'm going to aim for 2x S/B/R per week.  We're also overhauling our diet.

Welcome. My guess is that in Southern California that there are many options for races. Simply improving your training and your weight loss goals are commendable on their own though, ie; my feeling is that racing can be fun but that health and weight loss goals trump that. On the other hand there are folks here that have done a number of races/triathlons so I encourage you to ask questions and tap into that knowledge. Either way welcome.

I agree that the training and weight loss is the most important outcome, but if you're a competitive person then often it helps to have something that you're aiming for.

Happy New Year Everyone!

It's very easy for me to pick a January goal.  I commit to going to the pool with a positive attitude and completing every swim workout as it's written.   Swimming progress is a real struggle for me and when I don't make gains, I tend to go into the pool thinking I can't do it and then pick and choose parts of the workout to skip.  Not a formula for success.  If I ever really want to be competitive in my AG, swim improvement is a must.  Here's to January!

tammersue - 2013-01-01 1:43 AM Judi,  I have not chosen a race to work towards. I am not sure how long I will need to train beforehand. I like the idea of volunteering at one, as I have never been. That will give me some idea what to expect.

Good thoughts, the length of training time prior to a race really depends on the distances you want to do.  If you are thinking of competing in a sprint race probably 8 weeks is enough based on most plans.  This is conditional on having a passable ability to swim (and is the swim in a pool or open water), consistent bike and run training.  A lot of people newer to the sport come in with little to no swim background and that is the biggest limiter.  I was taught the basics of "how to not drown" swimming by my father a a kid.  While my stroke is improved after all these years it isn't right.    Most gyms with pools have a class designed for adult swimmers or options for lessons either private or small group.

Just improving overall fitness is an excellent goal so don't be shy here.

Fred D - 2013-01-01 6:14 AMOk I am going to make my goal for January....First a bit of explanation. I have another running injury so I will try to not run much in January. I also am coming off one of the worst training weeks of my last 7 years (aside from post IM weeks and illness weeks). My goal is 45,000 yds in the pool for January. BT has excellent logs and I've looked back upon my prior swim focus months and I once hit 57,000 back in 2009 when I had a serious injury that limited running and biking. I hate to aim so high that it can't be done, so 45,000 is swimming every second day for 3,000. This won't be the exact way it happens, but rather just the average.I am also going to re start my 'Finding Freestyle' program. Don't know if anyone is familiar with it, but I had started it in the fall and liked the first 4 weeks.Who wants to make a January specific goal with me?
My January training will be mainly getting my run back in shape post injury, but I don't want to put a mileage number on it for fear that in chasing the number I may ignore my body telling me to ease up. Instead, my goal is to try to run at least 4 days a week, mostly easy sometimes hard. Distances will be determined by how I feel. What is the " finding freestyle" program?

My "reach" goal is to run a minimum of 30 minutes 6x per week, and to be under 200 pounds by feb 1 (I'm 210+ right now). My minimum goal is to run 6x every week (any length of run, as long as I suit up and get out the door, even if it's just for a few minutes) and cook breakfast for myself every day. I trend to slack off on cooking and either skip breakfast, or just eat a quick junk snack (toast, cereal, chocolate muffin, something carby like that). I feel much better when I take the time to make scrambled eggs with veggies, or a smoothie.

Thanks for including me!

Name:  Gretchen (drfoodlove)

Personal Info:  Married, no kids, two dogs (4 & 12); 33 years old

My Story:  The only race of any kind I have ever competed in was a “fat girl relay” in high school when I was a thrower on the track team (4X100 with various objects to carry—shot put, tire, cup of water, and something else I can’t remember).  I have always liked swimming and biking…running not so much.  I started in triathlon in September 2012 as a way to expand my fitness regimen beyond the hiking and swimming I was doing.

Weight:  I need to lose about 100 pounds (conservatively).  I have had success in the past losing weight with diet and exercise.  I do not believe in fad diets excluding certain foods or food groups.  That is a recipe for disaster.  All things in moderation (something I need to work on!).  I love to work up a good sweat, but I have recently realized that I can’t out train a bad (or voluminous) diet.

2013 Races:  I plan to do a semi-local tri in Effingham, IL in mid-August (forgot the name!).  I may add another later in the season.  I would like to do one earlier in the season, but I spend May and June in Egypt (for work) and things get hectic before and after that trip.

Training:  Right now I’m doing a slightly modified version of the 20 week Oly BT training plan.  I just got a road bike for Christmas, so to date all of my training has been on the stationary bike.  Running wise I have just recently begun the C25K plan to actually get me running.  I have been doing all elliptical until two weeks ago.  Unlike most people here, I LOVE, LOVE, LOVE swimming.  I would happily do nothing but swimming, but prunny isn’t a look I really want to cultivate!

Goals for 2013:

1.)      Lose 70 of the 100+ pounds I need to lose.

2.)      Move my body at least 2500 miles…by any means.
