blueyedbikergirl - 2013-02-13 10:06 AM I'm a real athlete in my own mind!

I think therefore I exsist athletically?

Exactly!  If I pretend I'm an athlete in my head, that's all that matters, right?

Also know as the Fake It Till You Make It principle.

Now you're just telling all my secrets!

Yes but since you are an Ironwoman I figure you have already made it.

Leegoocrap - 2013-02-13 9:13 AM I used to be a real athlete like you, but then I took an arrow in the knee.

You too?  I know it really messed up my gymnastics career.  The arrow kept getting in the way.

It's a pretty serious condition

I play baseball in the summers on a league team. No not softball, hardball. We have uniforms and play at real stadiums with umpires and all that. I don't train for baseball, I just go play twice a week, and I'm not great but I don't suck, either. So the 30-odd baseball games in which I played last year made me an athlete, but the Ironman I did in November, for which I trained every day minus days off, for hours a day, doesn't make me an athlete? Well I'll be darned ...

it takes WAY more practice to hit .300 in baseball or shoot 75% from the free-throw line than it ever does to be able to run a triathlon.

In fact, if it wasn't for swimming, virtually ANYBODY could spend a month or two and finish an event up to Oly distance....especially with all of the walking that goes on.

I'm late to the thread, because, well, I took the title literally. I am not a real athlete. I am an unreal athlete!

That said, I just had to comment when I read the post comparing playing well at ball sports to simply finishing an endurance event. The mind boggles at times.

You can play baseball because of the hours and hours you spent playing as a kid/young adult.  You probably don't even realize how many hours it took you to be able to catch/throw/hit a baseball well enough to still play in a league at your age.......I'm willing to bet you don't have any players who just decided to take up baseball when they were 30 and come join the league.  That's my point.....it takes too much practice to be able to do it well enough to actually play.

No, being able to complete a triathlon does not make you an athlete, any more than being able to complete a 10K does.  In fact, it's ridiculously easy....just spend a little bit of time each day doing it and your in.....you can even walk the run.

I see I struck a nerve......whatever.  I shouldn't be posting on this thread anyway since all I do anymore is swim/bike/run at a pace that my 12 year old daughter makes fun of. Laughing

I'd hardly be able to call myself a "make believe athlete", much less a "real athlete".

Depreciating and sensitive LB.. See?

PS: my coach friend said he never trained for BB as much as I do for tri's. But he did play a lot when he was in grade school/ high school, . Not more than I train though.. His words. I think it's all about effort.
