Extreme Veteran ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() jeanneroth - 2006-08-30 9:52 AM Is anyone planning a meet and greet at IMFL? I'd love to meet everyone Thursday or Friday. How about some BT AM swims? I was going to suggest group dinners, but I just plan on going to Wendys and eating a Biggie Sized Spicy Chicken value meal with Diet Coke every day for lunch and dinner and don't want to deal with the dirty looks from everyone else. I'll follow it up with a giant frosty. Tommy |

Just my way of keeping people off my wheel. It was really just a joke on runnergirl's sig. In reality, I imagine grilled chicken, white rice, grits, turkey sandwiches, etc consumed for race week. Yes sir, I'll take the bland entree with a side of bland and bland and a glass of water. Booooooring, that's me!

Veteran![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Great idea about swapping bib numbers. I did not know if we would get our numbers before we got there or not. For the person posting about rooms- I am staying at the Summit again. Stayed there for Gulf Coast Tri in May of 05. It's within walking distance of the race start. Fairly reasonable and a one bedroom sleeps 6 and had two bathrooms that share one tub/shower. I liked it. I would love to have a group swim if any of you are staying at the Summit or next to it where we could meet up. Question- one of the guys from here who has a coach and has done IM before says don't do anything at all on Thursday before the race. Fine to do something Wed., and Friday, but not Thursday on the theory that you are storing up that day for Saturday. He says that is what his coach says. I was planning to swim Thursday am. Any thoughts on that? It will be great to get to meet some of you all. This has been so good to read what others are thinking. I am meeting with our local IM pro- a guy who has done a dozen of them- doing IM Wisconsin next weekend and doing IM Fla...then IM Arizona in 07- he's insane! Gonna pick his brain about IM Fla. Also, meeting with one of my other triathletes tomorrow who did IM Fla last year- his first IM, so he is more on my level. To pick his brain too. I have already started making my lists for stuff to go into the special needs bags. I have to admit- I'm a planner- just can't help it. I'll be the one with a spare wheel strapped to my back (LOL- just kidding on that one) Becky |

Gatorade will have a booth at the swim start/finish on the days before the race where you can check in your stuff and go swim while they keep an eye on it. Plus they give away free water bottles (a small, but powerful part of my brain will gather of several more water bottles because I might need more of them and YOU JUST NEVER KNOW). I plan on doing that. Nothing beats seeing what things look like from the course. As for the race week activity thing, I believe my plan calls for something just about every day of the week, but it's VERY light activity like a 20m swim & 20m run. I will no doubt be going nuts. Expert ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Thanks for the room recomendations. We are getting there Wednesday night and I like to swim the course as much as possible. So I'll be there Thursday and Friday, swimming from the Gatorade tent. Becky, please post any good info you get from your buddy about the race. Thanks in advance. I know you can get the bib numbers online a week or two ahead of the race date. Have a great Thursday! |

Veteran![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() I’ve just met with my two IM guys- one seasoned veteran, one who has only done IM Fla. Spence did say that he was feeling worn out about this point in the training. Lots of long, hard training weekends will just take it out of you. Sleep as much as you can! He took plenty of Saturday afternoon naps. Both say do not change anything the day of the race. Both said they had a peanut butter sandwich in their bike special needs and it was a life saver to have to eat half way though the bike. He also put two frozen bottles of his normal training drink in his bike special needs bag and they were still nice and cold when he got them. I was worried about the mass swim start, but Spence told me he waited only about 30 seconds and never had a problem getting bumped or people swimming over him. That’s been my biggest concern is the mass swim start. He also said, if you have someone with you that morning, take your own pump to air up your tires, then hand off your pump to your support person. They have folks working who can do this for you, but the lines are long. He finished in about what I am shooting for- around 14:30. And he said he did not feel that bad after finishing. It was hard walking up steps….just like after a marathon…but he went to the condo, took a quick shower then came back to watch others finish. Be sure you know how to change both your tires, carry extra tubes, co2 and put one or two extra in your special needs bag. They do have volunteers who will strip your wet suit off – let them! The bike course does have some rolling hills- which I did not know about. The course was flat for Gulf Coast Tri, but this course turns in a different direction for IM Fla. I plan to drive it off when I get there. There are tons of volunteers and when you finish the race you will have one person who is there just for you- to get you something to eat, drink… Yea!!! I’ll need it and want it! I’m pumped up again and looking forward to Nov. 4th! Becky |

Expert ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Becky- Thanks for the info. I will look at the bike profile on the website. I live in the Catskill Mountains so nothing in Florida is going to scare me...hills, what the heck do they know about hills! BTW-Is this everyones first IM? this is my second IM. My goal is 13:30, a bit ambitious. I did my first in 15:18 (IMLP 2005), but I had a flat and got off the bike to pee 3 times. I'm really looking to take time off in the bike portion. I think an hour at least. Then another 30 minutes off the run and about 10 minutes off the swim. I aslo had really long transitions which were unnecessary, so that's about another 15 minutes. give or take a few. Remember, naps and vitamins! |

Veteran![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() This will be my first Ironman. I'm excited about it and feel confident about the event and finishing. I know we have 17 hours, but I don't want to just finish, I want to do my best and have fun. It's been great to catch up on some sleep this weekend. Not too hard training schedule this past Saturday and Sunday. Today started the IM Specific 2 weeks. I swam 4,300 yards this morning, which felt fine. Longest swim so far, having done a few 4,000. Saturday will be another 100 mile bike ride. The first one I did about 3 weeks ago, I rode 50 with a group, so I had the benefit of company and drafting. This one I intend on doing alone..that should make a difference. And practice eating and a gel schedule. It's hard to know really how all this stuff is going to sit on my stomach once I start running. But, at least for energy, I can get a good handle on how well gel's every 30 minutes will do and Cliff Bars and Peanut butter sandwhiches settle at 50 or 60 miles. Jeanne, you sure do have hills where you are. The ride should be a piece of cake for you! Everyone train smart and be safe! Hope you all have had a great holiday weekend. Becky A |

Regular ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Sounds like a lot of people are feeling the effects of ironman training. BE CAREFUL!!! Don't get into a situation where you will overtrain, and toast yourself before the race. If anyone is interested, here is an article by Gordo Byrne. Some of his guidelines may go against your training programs, especially if you are working your butts off trying to get in all the workouts and meet your total volume targets, and ten weeks out is not a time to modify your training program, HOWEVER, there are some very intesting points on total volume, intensity, recovery and rest. Give it a read. http://www.coachgordo.com/gtips/race_strategy/golden_rules.html Also, if anyone is not sure about your taper, and race week, Joel Friel's Triathletes Training Bible spells it out for you. Might also be worth a read. All my training buddies completed Ironman Canada last Sunday. I haven't seen any of them yet because most of them took vacations afterwards, but needless to say, motivation is not a problem for me right now. I finished a 5:45 ride last week, only 130km, but into a brutal headwind, so it was a good workout. Also did a couple of one hour runs, and a couple of 1.5 hour bricks, 60/30 bike run. Can't wait for Panama City. See you all there. Jim |

I'm struggling now with alot of issues that article mentioned- for example, group rides= hammer time= not good for my training= I always get dropped. And I've gotten a lot slower, which is discouragining but good because I'll be able to run slow and seady for IM and walk when I need to. And...one of my friend's is training really hard core. Whenever I talk to her I worry that I'm not doing enough because she's always doing more. Reading that article made me feel much better! |

Regular ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() For anyone questioning their training program, or their progress, and if you are comparing your preparations to someone elses, here is a little story from Ironman Canada. 7 of my friends just recently trained and competed in IMC. They did most of their training as a group with lots of long group bike rides. My closest training buddy competed in the women 50 to 54 age group, and we were kinda worried about her training. She was travalling a lot with her family, and missed a lot of the long rides so we looked at her training schedule, and compared it to Gail Bernhardts 13 weeks to a 13 hour ironman, and realized that she was actually a little ahead of that particular training program. I kept telling her not to sweat it and that she would have no problem finishing. Final result was around 14:30. her swim split was about a minute faster than the second Hawii qualifier in her division, and her bike split was only about 15 minutes slower. she found the second half of the run hard, but she finished with no problem. Bottom line is don't sweat it. Get in the long rides, get lots of rest and make sure you recover from your key workouts. When you nail your taper you will get rid of all the acumulated fatigue, and you will stand at the starting line fit and with plenty of endurance to complete the race. See you all in PMC Jim |

The Original ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Another week almost down. What's on everyones' schedules for this weekend??? I have a 4.5 bike followed by a 1:05 track workout afterwards on Saturday. I'm making this up from last Saturday. I know I shouldn't try to make up workouts, but of all things I can't afford to miss a long bike. After this weekend I'll be back on schedule. I'm determined to have a better long ride tomorrowthan I did last time. I need to redeem myself since i felt AWFUL on my last 4 hour ride. I think I forget that I need to carb load the day before a long workout. I'm good about doing that for races, but I forget with training how long I'll actually be out there. My nutrition on the bike is good, it's just that I don't have enough gas in the tank to start out with. |
![]() ![]() |
Extreme Veteran![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() I'm going to do a super easy short bike on Saturday and an easy pool swim. Then on Sunday I'm doing the Duke Liver HIM + 1 hr easy ride following the race. Sunday should be a quality training session--I just need to make sure I don't go too hard (very difficult for me b/c when I'm racing, well, I race) because I can't afford to take a week recovery after... I swing right into the first of my last and hardest cycle of training weeks. (After it's recovery, race tuning (w/ slight training increase) and then two weeks of peak/taper. |

Master ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() I have a HIM race this weekend. I'm using this as training. I'm using the same nutrition as I plan to use at IMFL. Hopefully I can recovery quickly and get right back into IM training. Have a massage appointment on Monday to help with the recovery. After this weekend, my training continues to ramp up to a long bike of 6.5 hours, 2.5 run and 2 hour swim. Runnergirl, if you think you don't have enough gas in the tank to start with, you might want to look at your breakfast. I recently discovered that my long workouts are much better if I eat 700 - 800 calories about 3 hours before the workout. I get up at 4 am eat breakfast, then back to bed. I start the long workout at 7 am. TJ |

Regular ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Runnergirl Also make sure that if you do a workout today, that you get your recovery food into you as soon as you can after you finish. The sooner the better, but no longer than 2 hours after. Lots of good carbs and some protein. That's the quickest way to replenish your glycgen stores. There are lots of articles on post workout nutrition. Makes for good reading. I plan to do a 3 to 4 hour ride followed by a 45 to 60 minute transition run. On weekends when I am doing longer workouts, my typical breakfast is instant oatmeal, 2 packs, and a 1/2 cup of raisins, along with a glass of OJ. I usually eat this about 2 hours before, then watch TV or read while I sip a cup of coffee. Once the coffee is gone, I'll start sipping water. Hope you have a good ride tomorrow, and remember to enjoy the moment. Jim |

But maybe I'll try it again- now that I'm more tired now falling back asleep shouldn't be an issue). And since filling up my gas tank has been an issue it's well worth trying. One quesiton though- if you eat at 4am do you eat anything else before your workout- like a banana, Cliff Bar, etc?? |

Master ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() This was a tough week but I should hit all goals by tomorrow afternoon. I started my new job this week and that is making me have to shuffle the schedule but I think its manageable. The boss is flexible. On a down note, my wife and training partner has a stress fracture on her left foot. She is in an aircast and her training is limited to the pool and a trainer. I have done 90% of my training with her so its a real bummer not having her with me. I hope this thing heals, she wants to race so bad. Keeping fingers crossed. |
