Expert 1694 Illinois | Subject: RE: Ironman Florida 2015 : Official Thread Originally posted by pistuo Would love to hear what everyone is thinking for nutrition on race day. Time to start practicing it on our long WO's... Having a coach has been really helpful so far, so good investment there. I've been using Infinit custom blend for both bike and run -- it's been especially helpful on the bike since I don't have to carry water and bars, gels, etc. |

New user 39 Nashville | Subject: RE: Ironman Florida 2015 : Official Thread I have used infinit as well for my first 3 IM's and will use it again. I have found it to be easy to get the nutrition on the bike through infinit. Good luck on your training. |

Master 2725 Washington, DC Metro | Subject: RE: Ironman Florida 2015 : Official Thread So for all the returning IMFL vets, whats your take on the new bike course changes? I've never done the course so I don't know how big the "big improvements" are or what they mean to the athlete. |

Extreme Veteran 1018 | Subject: RE: Ironman Florida 2015 : Official Thread The constant bumps on the out\back section around SN area were annoying. However, it was the constant dodging of bottles and swerving bikes that had me concerned. Very dangerous. This course will be even faster. |

Extreme Veteran 872 Tx | Subject: RE: Ironman Florida 2015 : Official Thread I know it was cold and windy last year, but heard that is not the norm. Any veterans around here that can tell us the weather for race days in the past? Is it ever humid? If so, what percentage? |

Extreme Veteran 483 St. Thomas, US Virgin Islands | Subject: RE: Ironman Florida 2015 : Official Thread I've done 2011, 12 & 14. At least first 1/2 of bike and last half of run (after sun goes done) have been cold during those years. I always layer up, with cheap disposable layers on both the bike and run. I plan to wear as follows, Swim - trunks & full wetsuit Bike - lycra running shorts, 2xu running tights, bike shorts - if weather to be hot, will substitute 2xu sleeves for tights. for top, I'll have cycling vest, arm warmers and 2 thin disposable layers to start. Full finger gloves to start bike Top tip - have mentioned this before, get a pack 10 long cheap socks from Walmart- wear a couple of pairs to the beach - that sand is freezing at 6;45 am - use another pair as gloves on the beach - fyi I don't do "warm up" (more accurately freeze up after) swims on race morning. Last year was so cold (waiting for the bike to start) that I put a pair of socks on over my bike shoes (cut holes in the bottoms for cleats) and rode that way for entire bike - had lots of "wish I'd thought of that comments while on bike" - I recall for 2011 that I couldn't feel my toes until after 1/2 way mark on bike. You can also wear a pair of the socks as gloves/arm warmers for start of bike, dispose at an aid station when ready. Run - I'll drop bike shorts & unless I'm super sweaty, will run with same tops. Gloves are good. and a light IM ballcap I plan not to use my bike special needs bag (only put spare tubes and CO2 (they have been edging towards not getting bike SN bags returned more so in the last year). I put extra shoes and a few more things in run SN bag (it case of rain), but again don't plan to use. |

Master 2725 Washington, DC Metro | Subject: RE: Ironman Florida 2015 : Official Thread I would've never thought it to be that cold. Interesting. I'll have to rethink things a bit, good info. I remember doing one HIM where the air temp was ~36 degrees at the start of the race. Most miserable experience of my life, my review on here details it all... I'm starting to shiver just thinking about that race. |

Regular 233 Clermont, Florida | Subject: RE: Ironman Florida 2015 : Official Thread I've done 2005 2007, and 2014. I remember 2005 and 2007 as beautiful sunny days with temps in the mid 70s to about 80 F. Gulf of Mexico was near calm. Wind was not really a factor either year although I recall it building and being more oppressive near the end of the bike in '05. Humidity was not a concern (but I live and train in Central Florida). We all know what happened last year. I would check the weather report as close to your departure date as possible. It usually firms up 3-4 days in advance. Last year I was watching the weather and ended up throwing all my cold weather gear (tights/long sleeve shirts/toe warmers and hats) in the car at the last minute. Saved my butt. Hope that helps! If you are looking for more historic data the FarmersAlmanac.com website can be searched by zip code and date to get more info. Best of luck. Edited by exnavydoc 2015-09-23 8:39 PM |

Extreme Veteran 1018 | Subject: RE: Ironman Florida 2015 : Official Thread In 2013, I swam with the AquaSphere amber lens. It was perfect coming back in. Also the temp was perfect to me that year. I had a long sleeve in special needs bag just in case I needed it. I didn't use it. |

Extreme Veteran 872 Tx | Subject: RE: Ironman Florida 2015 : Official Thread How's the training going for everyone??? I missed 5 weeks of my training plan with an injury (weeks 5-9 of a 20 week plan). I'm doing the BT beginner plan. I just finished a big week and am feeling pretty good about it. However, this plan has a 3 week taper (no workout longer than 2 hrs)... what do you guys think? Seems long to me... |

Master 2725 Washington, DC Metro | Subject: RE: Ironman Florida 2015 : Official Thread Training is so/so... I haven't done nearly what I wanted, but think I've done enough to get by. We'll see in a few weeks. As to the taper, I think 3 weeks is good. That is just my opinion, however. The way I look at it is that you've put a lot of hours on the clock leading up to the race and it would seem fitting to take a while to shed all that fatigue. As I always say, you are not going to gain an appreciable level of fitness in the last few weeks but you run a real high risk of injury and/or built up fatigue by not tapering enough. |

489 | Subject: RE: Ironman Florida 2015 : Official Thread I've had to withdraw with knee bursitis so will have to be next year for me. Cleverly I bought the insurance so that's covered - not so cleverly I prepaid my car, accommodation and flights (from London) and there's no flexibility! So I've decided to come over anyway and today I signed up for three volunteer jobs. Registration on Friday, on the run course on Saturday and in the finish chute from 9pm to midnight. That enables me to register for 2016 too. Really looking forward to seeing an IM from the other side of the event having done three so far. |

Expert 1148 Santa Fe, New Mexico | Subject: RE: Ironman Florida 2015 : Official Thread Hi Guys! I've done this race now five times, 08, 10,12,13, and14. I needed a year off to recover and actually get some stuff done around the house. I've found out that I just cannot stay away from this awesome event so I just signed up as a volunteer. I'm doing bike check in on Friday and Catching on Saturday from 9:00 till Midnight.
Regarding weather Ive seen everything from 36 degrees in the morning, chilly cold and windy to the most gorgeous race day you can imagine with cool morning and an evening that stayed in the 70's. Right now, I'd be examining those options and figuring out what you're choices are. ....I always put a sweatshirt and windbreaker in run SN bag so that I have options at that point. Glen's tips about throw away clothes are right on. In addition, If it's cold on race morning I wear a $6 Walmart sweat shirt to the beach so that I don't get too cold waiting for the start. One other thing to consider is how much colder you might be if you end up walking rather than running the latter part of the marathon. Good luck! Hope to see you in PCB, Yasha (spelled Jasha)

I cant wait to sign up for 2016. For all the first timers doing the race this year, good luck and enjoy the swim in the warm gulf waters. Enjoy every minute of it and take it all in. Master 2725 Washington, DC Metro | Subject: RE: Ironman Florida 2015 : Official Thread Getting excited... dropped off the bike last night for Tri-bike Transport to take down. Taper is going well, I worked out my specific nutrition plan for the race and inventoried what I have left and what I need to buy. I'm about as set as I'm gonna be. We leave next Wednesday so I figure I've got a week to let the forecast start to shake out. That'll be the last piece of the puzzle for me. Hope to see you all there, and safe travels to all. |

Expert 1148 Santa Fe, New Mexico | Subject: RE: Ironman Florida 2015 : Official Thread Anybody interested in a short swim Friday morning? 6:00 meet on the boardwalk behind boardwalk beach hotel. The plan is to do a short swim primarily at getting more comfortable with open water, swimming in wetsuit and sighting for this particular event. It looks like I've got a group interested from the FB page. I'll be wearing a bright yellow T-shirt with M-dot on front. It's actually our BT group T from 2010. |

Extreme Veteran 872 Tx | Subject: RE: Ironman Florida 2015 : Official Thread Hey everyone, I had a friend tell me that I'm going to need a head lamp for the run (b/c stretches of it are very dark). However, it's been a few years since this friend did IMFL. Can anyone who has done it in the past few years give advice? I don't run with anything on my head... |

Extreme Veteran 1018 | Subject: RE: Ironman Florida 2015 : Official Thread A small clip light on a hat or visor helps find those uneven dips and potholes in the neighborhood. It's not the best terrain. But I know plenty of people that did fine without it. Since we are changing clocks this week it will be darker earlier. |

Regular 233 Clermont, Florida | Subject: RE: Ironman Florida 2015 : Official Thread Sunrise 0602, sunset 1652. Hence the earlier start and the note in the Athlete Guide that the race ends 17hours after the last athlete enters the water. (Not midnight.) That means unless you are a sub 11 hour athlete, it may get kinda dark. If you are in the back like me it can get really dark. A small LED head lamp or even a handheld light may come in handy back in some of the residential areas. Just my two cents. |
