Hey Guys, I have my first race tomorrow, I mean my FIRST race ever! Im pretty fit can handle all the distances easily, but all together have never tried. Just looking for a last minute pointer or two. I have annoyed all the staffers/volunteers working the race to death. THis seems like a very figure it out yourself sport in some ways. WE will run first and the bike and then swim. I feel like since the running and the swimming are my best events by far I should try to throttel through the run, do the bike as best I can (will still be slow) and then hammer the swim? ANy thoughts!

Right attitude buck!  There are always more races and while getting sick is never fun, it is much better than running a marathon and then aggravating the sickness with a weakened immune system after the run.

Eclay, you won't know until it happens.  You've trained, so just go out there and race to the best of your ability.  However you finish, do it with your head up and learn as much as you can in the process!  Good luck tomorrow!!

Quick question for anyone: Im packing my bag for tomorrow, Its a reverse tri, so I run, bike, then swim. On the transition between run & bike should I try to get the sweaty run cloths off and dry cloths on? IM thinking its not possible for the pants, but I can forsee trying to switch the tops out. Is this done on sprints, does it matter much. Its going to be cold tomorrow about 35 to 40 degrees most of the day!

Considering the weather I would prob. have a top change ready at the transistion, but I wouldn't make a decision on actually changing, until I got there. Keep in mind that I am a bit on the obsessive complusive side, but it would give me peace of mind. That way you can change the top, if you feel you'll be chilled at the beginning of the ride.

Good Luck Tomarrow,

Im no longer a total rookie! I finished no problem. It was not that bad, made me feel like I should think about trying the next level up next year after a few more. Really Really had a good time. I finished 47 ot of 103 and 5th in a a group of 9 in my age division. Total time for the 5k 13mile bike and 350 swim was 1:23:47, 23.06 run, 49:53 bike and 6:22 swim. My transition times were 2:09 and 2.19. Out of everyone I think I had the slowest transition time of anyone. I really did not feel like I was dragging in the part, but upon refelection I remember looking around to see what others were doing so I would have an idea of what to do. Compared to my age group I rocked in everything but the bike I was 4 minutes behind those who beat me, my transitions were about an minute 10 seconds longer. I got some work to do there, I think more experience will be the key for me there.

Oh yeah it was cold as I'll get out!
Thanks for all the feedback group leading to this event, it all came in handy and really made a difference for me enjoying the race ot being nervous about the whole thing.

Not yet, but I have already looked at the calendar. I do not know how long to rest or train in between? I obviously want to improve on each discipline, but not sure how long it takes to recover and the begin building a stronger body to compete with!! Also, Im not sure how crazy I am about the pool swim, was very easy distance and way over crowded, might be different if I was way up in teh front!!

Should only take you about two or three days to recover from a sprint.

Find another one on the calender, get an organized plan to peak for it, and go!  If the one you want to do isn't for a long time, add in some running races to keep yourself fresh and train smart in all three disciplines building a good "base."

For me personally, it is always easier when I have a goal race to focus on.  As soon as I'm finished with one, I know the proximity of the next one and phase my training accordingly.

Don't wear socks on the bike (if you are biking when it is warmer)... it's hard to put socks on wet feet.

Wear your bike and run outfit on the swim.  Don't try to wrestle anything on when you are wet.

Have all your snacks, etc. on your bike.  Don't waste any time snacking in the transition.

I have a obnoxious towel set out with all my stuff on it that I can easily identify from a distance.  I have another towel I use to towel off.

That's all I got.  I am not the fastest person in the world in the transition.

All really good suggestions.

Also, lay out your stuff so it's easy to put on/take off.  Sometimes this gets tricky when the bikes are really packed in, but work around that.

Others you might look at trying:

- Keep your helmet hanging from your handlebars and put it right on as soon as you get to the bike (and strapped on, no need to forget about the strap and get a penalty)

- Get some speed laces (elastic type ones) so that you can slip on your shoes and just snug the elastic so you can just go.

Thanks group, I also am looking at geting some new running shoes. Im currently ruinning in some pretty generic addidas not particulary greeat running shoes. THey are super snug, if I wear a 10 1/2 normal shoe should my runners be 11's? Also, are there any shoe makers in the runners world that make a superior product or is it a matter of preference to each individual (the shoes are virtually the same)?

I think shoes are extremely important.  I suggest going to a specialty running store and getting fitted with the proper shoe for your foot and gait type.  And make sure you change them every 3-500 miles without fail!  Or else you may end up in chiropractor's office.

Make sure you pack your running shoes and take advantage of down times and just go for a run.  Talk to the desk at the hotel for suggested places to run and make sure it's safe to get around in the area you are staying.  Take advantage of the onsite work out room if they have one.  It may not be much but something is better than nothing.

Almonds, animal crackers, dried fruit, dried cranberries are all favorites of mine and I often mix them in the same bag.  I also like sun chips or lays baked chips, these feel more like snacks.  For drinks, vitamin water is a favorite lately, diet green tea and then just plain water, I don't do too many sodas anyway.

And/or, eat before you really get going so that you don't have the need to eat on the road.

Definitely plan the snacks ahead of time and it will save you money and a few pounds.

Having just returned from a 5 day business trip myself, I can honestly say, that I failed miserably in this department. Although, I did make smart food choices...bananas/yogurt for breakfast, light sandwiches for lunch...I did not find opportunities to train. Mornings became a burden due to the time changes (I lost two hours), so I never felt as though I had enough sleep to get up earlier to train, then nights were packed with receptions/team building sessions.

I'll rededicate myself after I recuperate from my travels and begin to crank through the training, but have realized...it is not always convenient and that a few days/or a week break won't kill you!
