KSH - 2006-12-30 8:10 PM Ah... I missed the challenge. Not sure I enjoy peeing that much though. So, what's this I read about our mentor shooting for a DOUBLE IRONMAN in 2007? Does that mean you have to get TWO tattoos?

Haha, I already have an IM tat, and was thinking of a double iron tat, but I'm not sure what to get. Two IM logos would look like I finished two IMs instead of double the distance...oh decisions, decisions

New Challenge

For the month of January, and maybe even longer, post something positive everyday. Even if it is just "Hey, at least I didn't get hit by a car"

I have found that tri training is mostly mental. If you can find something positive about your workouts, it makes it easier to continue to do them. Knowing that you have to post something positive, will force you to find something positive while doing it, which could turn a bad workout around or make a good workout even better.

1/1/07:  Postive thought.  Despite tipping the scales at 153.5, the size 7 shorts fit.  I can defintly dig on fat converting to muscle.  Now *that* is some mental training.

just wondering, what's the concensus on openwater training with fins. we have alot of dangerous rivers around here, and i know how fins can save your life in a swift water situation. i also know they can be used for training as well. seeing as this wed's my first open water swimming situation, and it could be cold, i was thinking of swimming with fins, kind of give myself a way out just in case. what are your thoughts? i have duck feet (big surf bodyboarding), churchills (bodyboarding), and shorty's (cut off duckfeet, for dropknee bodyboarding) can you tell i did a little bodyboarding in the past, haha.
thanks for any advice.

I have fins I use in OWS.  I don't have a lot of experience with them, but they do help propel you.  It's your swim, if having them makes you feel comfortable, bring 'em along.  Enjoy!

I will enjoy Madcows challenge to drink 2 liters of water each day. Thus ensuring I am properly Hydrated going into Disney Race.

One of my RWOL buddies from Florida said temps this Sunday are low of 62 and high of 84.....I am hoping for a nice cold front to move in and lower those temps a bit. Much too high for what I am used to.

Snaps10, do what you feel comfortable with. If you are swimming in an area that doesn't have bad current, use the shortest fins you have. Have fun

If fins will make you feel comfortable, then you should wear them. Although, you do not want to become dependent on them, since you can't race in them.

If you have dangerous rivers, I might suggest you get that emergency flotation device you can wear around your waist, and deploy only when needed. There is nothing wrong with being safe and knowing that if you get in a dicey situation, you have something there that will help you float. I think they have an advertisement for it on the main page of BT.

I am working on my second liter of water and getting ready to head out for my 1 hour run and was thinking about nutrition. I know there are a few of us getting ready for a race in the next week or two. How is your race day/training day nutrition and what is your race plan?

Here is mine: (Ironman training/racing)

For any workout under 1.5 hours, I don't usually take anything, probably should but usually don't, because I'm lazy.

For any bike workout that lasts 1.5 hours or more, I have been taking my version of an IM cocktail. All liquid and almost no solid food. In 2005 I used a drink that was 2 scoops of CytoMax, 2 scoops of CarboPro, and 2 scoops of MetEndurance. The combination of the 3 was supposed to be a perfect combination of supplements. Each bottle was 600 calories and would last 1.5 hours (6 big drinks). I had no problems at all. Move ahead to 2006, and my stomach couldn't handle this drink. Most of my workouts over 3 hours ended up in a ball of fire, with me leaving most of my drink in the bottles and limping home. With a little over a month until IMCdA I realized it was the MetEndurance that I couldn't handle, so I put in 3 scoops of Cytomax and 3 scoops of CarboPro. It was a little sweet and I'm sure there were minerals and vitamins that I missed out on, but I could at least tolerate it. Now I am experimenting with a smaller amount of Cytomax and more CarboPro along with maybe a gel or two per hour. I might try the original cocktail with MetEndurance again to see if I can handle it now.

On the run I again try to keep it to liquid calories, so as my workouts are going to start getting above 1.5 hours I will carry gel/liquid flasks and try both my new cocktail and old cocktail to see what works along with gels. One thing I always do is find out what nutriton the race is going to have at the aid stations. I will at least try training with the stuff I know they will have on the course, that way if all else fails (like losing your food) you will have tried everything on the course.

For those of you that have races later in the year, what has worked for you? What will you use on race day and what are using now?

Positive Thought for the Day:

Seeing everyones posts inspired me to FIND the 30mins I didn't think I had today to workout.  Not great for time BUT definitely beats being down with flu and not working out.  Thanks to all of you!!

 All the Best,

Nutrition is going to be my challenge as I start upping my racing distances.

I am pretty OK with shot blocks, water and Gatoraid Endurance. Yes, I know there are better sport drinks out there, and as I move away from sprints, I am going to start trying them out in my workouts.

Otherwise, nutrition for an Ironman seems very daunting to me. I will seriously need some FOOD in my stomach about half way through that bike, or even sooner. I can pretty much eat anything and ride and not feel it. Now, I can't eat just anything and swim or run. But I can't imagine racing for 16 hours without one MEAL in my tummy.

I guess when the time comes, I'll take some stabs in the dark and see how my stomach reacts!

madcow - 2007-01-02 11:44 AM

How is your race day/training day nutrition and what is your race plan?

For the marathon, I am planning on just water for hydration, HammerGel (in a flask), and Endurolytes.  I have tried Accelerade, which will be on course, and was OK with it, but I'm trying to keep it as simple as possible.  They will also have Cliff Shots on the course (in only ONE spot!), but they can cause me some tummy issues, so I'm sticking with Hammer.

For the Ironman, I still have a long way to go to work out my nutrition.  For my long rides in the past, I have used a multi-hour bottle of Perpetuem with good results, but I really need to tinker with it a bit to nail down my ideal cocktail!  For the run, I may have to get hubby to set up a buffet of the various options while I'm doing a long run and see what I like!

Nutrition:

For Disney Marathon this weekend.

dinner the nite before will be early around 5 pm. some type of Pasta meal with chicken, and a salad. two beers along with two glasses of water.

Race morning:

Kashi go lean with skim milk, Coffee about 3AM, water.

5AM: Banana & water, 5:30 AM Accelerade (Orange)

6AM race starts - During race - 4 Carb boom strawberry Kiwi Gels taken at nearest water station to miles 8, 12, 16, 20, will get my water and powerade at the aid stations throughout the race. I believe they have banana's and other food at mile 19 which I will not eat, Hard Candy at mile 23 which I will grab a few pieces if the FAST people leave me any.

I use Cliff shots during some training runs....but I sometimes find them hard to swallow if running at faster pace....so prefer the gels.

just thought i'd say everyone have a productive day today. do something active (aside from training) make some money (if you're so inclined) spend some money (if that floats your boat, sinks mine) and generally have a fun day.
on my ride last week i did something that i have forgotten to do for quite some time. i looked around. it was a beautiful area, great weather (until the sun went down, then it was flat cold) and a great time to enjoy Creation. don't forget why we tri. because it's fun.

Disney Goals:

I am running Disney this wekend which by default will be my first full Marathon. I tried to enter the Disney half about 3 months ago but it was closed thus the default to full marathon & the beginning of my daily posts here.

As many of you know I just started running in June and I couldnt do a complete mile at that time. My training has come a long, long way but I am still very nervous about this race.

I am hoping to FINISH and enjoy myself. I can use this Marathon as a gage for future races of this distance.

if I have a perfect day, I could break 5 hours but that is highly unlikely. I will be happy if I finish anywhere from 5 - 5 1/2 hours (Yes I'm Turtle slow.....LOL). Its supposed to be hot, muscle fatigue from 20 - 26 is unknown, and I may have to do some gallow walking towards the end. I am going in hoping to only walk thru the aid stations but Gallow is my plan B in case of emergency.

I really will be happy with any finish & am glad to be hitting the start line injury free and continuing my journey towards better fitness and a healthier lifestyle.

I am bringing my laptop so will at some point type up a race report. Will be in Florida for two weeks (Mon, Tues, Wed work conference) the rest vacation. I will try and hit an internet Cafe each day to check in and inspire all of you.

Train well!

Tom

Tom,

You are going to do great. You are trained and healthy. You can't ask for anything more. Like Snaps10 said, take lots of pictures and have fun. You only have one first marathon, so just enjoy yourself. Going from not being able to run a mile to getting to the starting line of a marathon is a victory in itself and you should be proud.

Just remember that when things get tough out there, you will have your BT family here cheering and supporting you, no matter what happens during the race!

Take care

Tom

those cheap little disposable cameras like you get at the drug store are actually fairly light. i usually throw one in my jersey pocket when i ride just in case. but they have this stuff inside called film, and you have to take it in and they give you pictures on paper, wierd huh.
