The Clydsdale and Athena divisions are for bigger triathletes.  For Athena's It's usually anyone over 160# or something in that range.  Clydsdale I think is over 200#??  It can be different for different races as well.  It's basically treated as another age group, but not specific to age, but size.

Diane&Mike - 2007-01-28 10:07 AM Good day Julia, Trying to get strength training in today not real up on the weights on my own so have found a "cardio/chisel" class at the gym that I really enjoy. How would I log this in the training logs? Also will be getting bike time in today, may be with family should this be added as part of training? We loved the article posted about Dick and Rick! We had seen the Ironman footage before but everytime it is inspiring. Cry everytime I see it. ( I am such a girl) Cried the whole time listing to the song and video. Thanks, Diane & Mike

I would log the cardio/ chisel class under 'sports' then 'aerobics'.  I think that's the best way to look at it for now.  Or you could just classify it as 'strength' then 'general' and give a description of what you worked on

As for the biking, I would DEFINATELY log it as biking, even if it's a MTB ride with the kids or whatever.  We take out kids all of the time - the point is that you are moving your legs

I'm not sure if I posted this everywhere but D3 multisport has GREAT core strength exercises on their web site.  http://www.d3multisport.com/articles.php then click on the Strength I, II, etc...  They are easy and there are pictures of EVERY routine and they are great for Core work!

So let's all set a little goal for the week.  This is just a little something I do with myself each week - I pick one little thing to stick to for a whole week.  Mine this week has to do with nutrition (and a secondary one is sleep)

This week I will make sure I eat enough, eat healthy - specifically no beer, no chocolate and no ice cream this week.  And I will sleep 8 hours each night.

Can you guys think of one small easy goal for yourselves for the week.  It can be as simple as drinking 100 oz of water a day.  But make it a goal that you know you can achieve - it will help you feel better about yourself by the end of the week

Great idea!

My goal for the week...ok goals:

Cut down my coffee intake to one thermos (1 1/2 big cups).

Spend 10 minutes each day stretching outside of my work day.

You DEFINITELY can't ban beer on Super Bowl Sunday, blasphemy!

My goals for the week are to get to bed 8+ hours before I need to wake up, eliminate the after dinner sweets (bad habit left over from the holidays), and to moderate my eating this week in light of the nachos, hot wings, and beer that will likely be consumed Sunday.

Oh Jen, come on!  This is Superbowl Sunday!  No way Julia can sit there and watch the Colts play instead of her beloved Pats and not break into the beer.  Have some compassion!

I am in the camp with cutting out the after dinner snacking. Drinking more water and less wine.

- No snacking after 7PM
- Drink no less than 64 oz of H20 a day
- Only drink wine on Fri, Sat and Sun with dinner

Well, since the freaking BEST team in football isn't in the Superbowl...Julia doesn't have to watch it and can thus avoid the beer (and ice cream).

Um yeah, or the younger, better looking Tom Brady and the Patriots...  Whatever though

I like everyone's goals this week.  I hope you are all realistic about them.  The key is this - give yourself something to feel good about yourself for.  As the season goes on, you will set tougher goals, so start with a few little ones that you know you can make.  Let's get a great week going!

I didn't realize we have so many people that were formally from the East Coast!  I went to H.S. in southern N.H.....I knew I had some Patriot fans out there.....I'm trying to get into more people's logs from our group, kinda been bad at that.  Trying to find time to get all my Grad work done on top of all the time I spend surfing B.T. and reading logs.....I still have to get to know many of you, promise I'll do better!  I think Im going to try running on the treadmill tomorrow before my P.T. appt.....fingers are crossed!

At least no one mention the Broncos! They are the main reason I don't like to watch football.
This is truly terrible I did not even realize the big game was THIS Sunday, thought it was still a week away. I am one who only watches for the commercials anyway.

Besides my goals listed in my training log Sunday - I would like to add get in the pool at least once and on the bike once this week. (and eat a fresh fruit and a fresh vegi for snacks sometimes :0)

My goal for the week is to try to go two days in a row with no chocolate, dessert, pastries and eat more veggies. I rarely eat a salad. One salad a day for this week. A good one I'd really like to remember is to bring a couple hard boiled eggs with me for after a workout.

A question for everyone, does anyone notice that during a long workout you gain strength and energy the deeper you are in the workout? For example, I've never swam 2000m before and it was very long for me and I was quite tired at first, but near the end I felt like I could have gone on. Any idea why this happens?

This happens to me all of the time.  I think there are a few explanations, but this is just opinion.  As I started running more and more, I noticed that I was never even warmed up until mile 3 or 4 - that used to be my entire run!  So as you build endurance (even though maybe not in the pool specifically, maybe you've been biking more) it might take you longer to get warmed up and feeling good.

Also, there seems to be a phenomenon of the psyche...  If you know you have to do a treadmill run for 30 minutes, you are tired at 20 minutes...  If you are supposed to run for 75 minutes, at 20 minutes you are feeling just FINE!

Another possible explanation - at some point during a breakthrough workout, you will also start to produce more adrenaline and endorphines.  This could be an actual physical cause for you starting to feel good...  This would be a GREAT question to put to "ask the coach" on the BT website - Mike Ricci and/ or Coach Kevin would know the correct answer for sure...

I am right there with you. Once I hit about 400 yards the endorphins really starts to flow and I feel like I can swim forever. I usually stop swimming purely because I have to get my kids out of the gym daycare (they have a time limit). Same thing with my run (as long as it's outside).

I found this little blurb online, not sure if it is correct but it sounds good: the endorphin rush that is produced during long-duration exercise occurs when a hypothalamic neurotransmitter is released from the anterior pituitary gland. These endorphins then block the pain sensation, promote a feeling of euphoria and reduce feelings of stress in the body.

Ever heard of the runner's high?  It is the same concept and yes I do believe it is the endorphins.  Plus the mind can do horrible/good things for your workouts and once you can get past that barrier it does become easier!  I miss my runners high!    But I have found a new high with swimming and biking.

I sent Mike the question, I like this runner or swimmers high. I just need to remind myself that the first quarter of the workout will suck then it'll get good.

Julia do you get my responses to your 'inspire me' messages? I've just been hitting reply, is there a better way to get my messages to you?
