Well I had the shifts from hell yesterday at work, 6am-2pm and short change to the midnight shift 10pm-6am, but I managed to put in a pretty good 55min ride on a the trainer before a nap!

Reference the century ride... I've never done anything like that, but like everyone else has said.. you have plenty of time and I really could never imagine letting my inlaws/parents etc do it without at least trying it myself! Sounds like fun!

When is the ride? Do you have plenty of time to get ready for it?

I do have plenty of time, i'ts not until June...so, if I am consistent with riding, I'm sure I'll get to 100 miles!   I'll spend some time this winter on the trainer and then when warmer weather hits I'll try to build from 20 miles at a time to 30, 40, and so on.  The thought of just going for a 60 mile ride on a Saturday boggles my mind, but then, so did a lot of things I'm planning to do next year .

I hit a 7 miler today, the longest I've run in a really long time...and I feel fantastic.  It was slow but I never felt tired, I stayed in Z2 for most of it, and I felt like I could keep going when I finished.  I even felt STRONGER the 2nd loop than I did the first loop and came in 5 seconds faster.  WOOHOO!

Great job on the run today. I will go back and look up a few things to give you some ideas on building up the bike.

Good job getting in a ride. Sometimes just getting in something beats doing nothing.

Andy- Welcome to the group. I think the IM is a much better choice than the car. I agree with your thoughts on the Mitchell report, as I'm interested to see what the actual fallout will be. I feel like you just have to wait and see with things like this.

Lexus- I also wanted to say great job getting a short ride in within a short amount of time. Your discipline is impressive.

I did 1500+ in the pool today. I definitely felt a little tired towards the end because I am only getting 1 swim in per week. Again, I'm not worried as there is a lot of time ahead. Hope everyone has a great Saturday night!

Nole40 - 2007-12-14 8:52 PM What's up group? Any workouts on tap today? I got in a 34-plus minute run in 22 degree weather, followed by a short strength session. Gotta love the midwest! Any baseball fans in the group? Thoughts on the Mitchell report? Have a good weekend.

I bailed on a run today, but I don't feel too bad about not doing anything today because I've worked out every day this week so far . Plus, it looks like it will storm on Sunday again, so I'll have to move my long run to tomorrow instead, so it's better that I relaxed today.

Probably the most exciting thing that happened today is that I signed up for an organized bike ride! The Ride to Montauk, across Long Island. I am signed up for 66 miles, but I can change my mind to the 100 up to race day. Husband's parents have signed up for 100 miles (they have NOOOOOO idea), but if they do it, I will absolutely do 100 too - no way are they going to bike more than me that day! But I've never biked more than 40 miles, so I'll have a lot of biking to do to get ready. But it's supposed to be flat as a pancake, so it should be fine, I just have to get used to be in the saddle that long.

Have any of you ridden a century before?  Did you have to do much prep?  I'm really no bike rider...I've probably only ridden 500 miles to date since I got my bike.  *sheepish*

I've done a century ages ago.

That should be a nice ride, I used to do a lot of biking around Connecticut when I was living there.

One thing that helps is getting a good daily base of 15-20 miles a day. I was commuting to work, about 8 miles each way. Then start to work up to 50-60 mile rides on the weekends. I know that there are some good ones in your area, although you might get a lot more hills then will be in the century.

At least for me, there was a significant difference between 60 miles and 100 miles, especially nutrition. I could knock off 60 miles without even thinking about food. 100 miles needed some more preperation.

Thanks for the comments on my getting onto the bike for a bit the other day, the shift work makes training difficult... but I find it's kind of like an escape as well so it's all good...

I've done all my traveling for the holiday already, I'm ready to get back at 'er now! I'm back to work tomorrow but plan on getting a ride on a the trainer in the AM and a swim in the evening. My swimming has suffered a bit in the last couple months... I went to Australia for a month and then some traveling in Canada for a week or so.. I find that I can keep up with the running and even some cycling while I'm on the road.. but the swimming is tough, I'm looking forward to being back in the pool more often!

Went for an awesome run tonight... it was only about 35 minutes, and was an easy pace, but it is only about minus 10 tonight, quiet, no wind, gorgeous xmas lights and crisp snow. I enjoyed just seeing parts of my neighbourhood that I'd never seen before! The run kind of came secondary to the scenery :-) Was really relaxing, I'm so glad I went out! The snow on the road/sidewalks is kind of a pain in the rear end.. feels like I only go about half way for the amount of effort I'm putting out.. anyone else deal with this? Tips/Advice?!

hope all had a good weekend! Had a big xmas party last night... wasn't sure I'd be going out anywhere for a run today.. lol

Good job on the run and yes I know what you are dealing with. I ran 7.5 mi tonight and sidewalks were covered with 7 in of snow. Times will naturally be slower but don't worry about that. Do you train with a HR monitor? If so just stay in your zone you plan on and don't worry about times at this point in the year. You want to build fitness now and it will all pay off when the weather breaks.

What is up group? How is everyone doing on this Monday? I'm busy watching my Chicago Bears take out the Vikings on Monday Night Football (although we are still bad).

1200M+ in the pool this evening. Got off work before 6 so I figured I would take advantage. How'd everyone else do?

I hit a two-fer today, a 4 mile run in the ice and cold (love it!), though, clearly not as cold as what alexis has to deal with, and then a 1950yd swim. I feel great!

So, though I am working on all 3 disciplines right now, my main focus is running. I'm working my way up to 25mpw. Especially to you guys with running backgrounds, how would you break up 25 mpw into 4-5 running days a week? I'm currently up to 7 miles as my long run, usually occurring on Sundays. What I'm more getting after is, I don't know when to take the 2-3 days off, or how to structure the rest of the runs. I've been trying to do something like this:

S M T W T F S

7 x 4 2 4 x 2

But I don't know if the 2 on W and S do any good (I often skip them), or whether it makes sense to go for 3 days in a row in the middle of the week, or how long to make them relative to my long runs, etc. Any advice or tips? Assume that I'm basically just running (my swim/bike volumes right now are so low as to not really impact this running sched), and oh yeah, I do all my runs as easy runs. I don't think I have enough base to really be doing speedwork, though I'll be adding some tempo runs maybe in the New Year.

Thanks!!

Finally...I added all you guys to my buddy list so I'll be checking you guys out. Fun!

Oh yeah - go chargers! They whupped arse yesterday. Poor Lions. In all my time in Ann Arbor they sucked every single year. Hubby and I are traveling to San Diego to be with my family on Wednesday and will be tailgating and going to the Chargers/Broncos game on Christmas Eve. Woooot!

Lisa, I am definatly not a coach so the whole grain of salt thing. But what I did for years and take what you want of this, is I would race a lot on Saturdays sometimes up to 35-40 races a year. Then on Sunday would be my long run. Now I wouldn't advice that for a beginner but what I would say is try to keep your long run on Sunday, and maybe add a tempo run on either Friday or Saturday. I would try to vary the tempos a little to build speed and strength in your running. Here  might be an example week

S- 7 easy

M- off

T- 3 easy

W- 4 with middle 2 at tempo pace

Th- off

Fr- 4 Tempo

Sat- 3 easy

Lots that you can do with it. I am now being coached myself and am learning a lot of new ways to train, many that I never did in the previous 10+ years. The one thing I have found so far is consistency and vary tempos. Try not to skip those easy runs because they are all building blocks for the future.

I'll be doing the pool for the next couple of days, because they are closing it for maintenance at the end of the week.

I know I will have some pool accessability issues coming in the next few weeks also.
