Hey Everybody,

The wife and I are going to be in Louisville next weekend for the Derby Marathon (I'm doing the half) and I'm looking to ride a loop of the course on Sunday morning.  If anybody is interested in riding shoot me a PM.  I plan on heading out from the Galt House around 6:30am on the 26th for a loop through LaGrange and will probably do the out and back on 1694 as well.

According to the map I should be able to take River Road to 42, but I thought the bridge was out around there.  Can anybody confirm that and if it is can you shoot me directions on how to avoid it?  I appreciate it.

Matt

That should be a good ride. This will be my first Ironman so I am looking for something like this. Do they have a website for more details?
Thanks

I see most of you have started racing already...I thought I would be in shape for it too... but I think the weather is affecting my 'optimism' lately. I keep focused on IMKY but I would love to do some racing before... So far just thinking about 1 Sprint, 1 Oly and 1 Half... any opinions on the effect of 'over-racing' before the IM? And... I know there are fanatics out there who do 6+ IMs a year... but I need to keep my day job ;(

The bridge is out just continue on River Rd. you will see bridge closed signs, follow Wolf Pen Branch Rd. (the new course route) up to US 42 and turn left. Be very careful once you get on 42 traffic is very heavy and fast on this section until you get past Prospect.

Good luck with the mini it will be hot with temps. in the low 80 highs for this time of year. It will pick up most of the IM route except for the hills of the park about mile 3-5 the rest is pancake flat, have fun.

Someone posted a link to a video of the new route a while back in the thread.  The video was by Heather Gollnick(sp?) and it included some commentary.

Edit:  g shotts posted it.

One sprint, one oly and 1 HIM should be fine as long as you leave plenty of time to recover after the HIM. I'd say 6-8 weeks before your IM should be fine. You're spending all this time getting into great shape, you might as well enjoy it as much as you can. For me that means racing.

Thanks guys.  I plan on going fairly early on Sunday morning, hopefully the traffic isn't too bad on the way out on 42.

for the races I do leading up to IMKY, are just fun races to remind me why I'm training and visit with the friends I've made.  I don't taper for the races and do my normal IM training. Sometimes that means doing the rest of that days training after a race even.  Obviously I don't have great race preformance but I did PR the bike and run for a sprint tri (as well as a 5k) last year while IM training.

Last year I raced once before IMKY and for this year I told my coach that I needed to race more often.  Basically I was getting drained mentally fom all of the training and worrying about cut-off times, etc and just forgetting the fun of triathlon.  This year, prior to IMKY I am racing 2 HIMs, 2 sprints, possibly and OLY and a few running races.  Do what keeps YOU motivated.

Last year before IM Louisville I raced a 15k run, sprint tri, olympic tri, marathon, and half IM.  I used them all for training and didn't taper.  I'm racing less this year.  I was fine with all the races last year, but have found I enjoy training as much, if not more, than racing.  I'm happy training, training, training... Hope this works okay for me this year.  As of now I just have a marathon and a half scheduled beofre Louisville.  I can always add races if I feel the need.

Need to get back on track and intend to tomorrow with 4 hrs of pavement time on my bike working on my tan

In 08 = 1 half mary, 2 sprint tris

In 09 = 1 half mary, 1 HIM, 2 sprint tris and a training camp.  I hope to work in one or two more races.

I didn't do IMKY last year but this year I'll be doing a full marathon (already done), a sprint, and a half IM prior to Louisville.  I semi-tapered for the marathon and have slowly been working my way back to full-on training since the marathon (the last two and a half weeks).  It took a lot more out of my legs than I thought (naively thought I should say) it would.  I'm looking forward to my other races though... it'll make it easier for me as I've been training since Oct. ... I need to break up the routine!

What about recovery from a half IM?  For those of you who have done a full mary and half IM are recovery times similar?  For some reason I feel like recovery from a half IM would be a little easier... but what do I know?

I did a marathon in Jan and a HIM earlier this month. I felt it took me about a month to fully recover from the marathon, but felt fully recovered from the HIM after about a week.

I'm going to agree with all of you: IM should be a journey, not a destination (that came out a bit corny)... and the more I enjoy it, the better. Hence I will think about adding as many races as I can fit in my schedule (probably shorter distances, like Half marathons and Olimpic Tris with some time to recuperate)... because the second question in my head is... what do I do once I finish IMKY? Give up training? Nooo.. (I need to justify the future purchase of a cool bike for next season!) I'll probably continue racing shorter distances (at least in 09)... therefore there is no reason to apply the same thinking to the pre-IM season. All the work put on training needs to be enjoyed.... it's like buying an expensive wedding dress... and get married only once!

I have always been lucky and recovered pretty well after marathons and the few HIM's I have done. But I would agree that HIM is easier. Marathons, especially racing a marathon is just hard.

Got some nice IMKY training in today.

71 mile ride with just under 2300 feet of elevation climbing on a 80 degree day. The warmest it has been previous for my long rides was 45 degrees. The heat definatley wore on me as the day went on.

Some of the marathons that I really "raced" definatly took me longer than my two IM's, though I have never really "raced" an IM so hopefully come Aug. 31- early Sept, I have give more insight Laughing

Well, after IMAZ last year I was kicking around doing this one via a community fund slot when I read your post. So I went online with Active and gave it a try to see what it would tell me.......... It told me I just paid $1300 and I am in. I also booked 5 nights right downtown at the fairfield Marriott no problem.

Not sure why you couldnt get in?????

Anyway, I guess I am commited now so I better start training. 18 weeks left.
