blackledge - 2010-06-29 10:10 AM Hi all.
Q- Great race and race report!  Congrats on completing your 1st Olympic distance.

I didn't race this weekend. My mind wasn't really into it (long story which I will try to summarize on here).  I was staying at my parent's house this weekend before the race (I only see them probably 6 times/year). I noticed my dad's hand shaking a little bit when he was resting but didn't think too much about it really. Then later on Saturday, I saw him throw down a wrench in aggravation and he is usually pretty cool-tempered.  Well long story short I come to find out he was diagnosed with Parkinson's disease. They were going to tell me after I raced and before I went home as my Dad didn't want to tell me before the race.
Usually I can use things like this to motivate me but I just couldn't get it together for race day...my mind just wasn't in it especially with my dad being there. So I decided to just spend some time with my family last weekend and my dad and I actually went on a bike ride together instead.  Thanks for listening everyone...I am glad that I have my manatees.

Ryan, I can only hope my son grows up to be such a thoughtful and kind man.  Hugs to you and your family.

Sounds like you made the heart felt and unselfish decision. We're here for you. I'm sorry about your father's diagnosis. Glad you'll be able to spend time with him though. Take care,

Ryan- sorry to hear of your dad's diagnosis.  Definitely see where your head wasn't in the race and I am sure you were glad you spent some extra time with the family instead.

Yanti- Glad to hear you are starting to recover and are taking it easy.  Which IM are you doing again?  How long until the race?

Quincy- will read the race report in a bit.  Always enjoy your reports.

Lynn & Allison - How did your races go? I know that you were both busy this week so I will wait patiently to hear about them

Lynn - I hope you have safe travels to IN.  You are not too far away from the Chicago manatees now! I actually have a brother-in-law that lives in Indianapolis.
Allison - I hope your move was successful and wasn't too tiring on your body after your race.

I went for an OWS mile-long swim last night. The water felt good but it was a choppy night (lots of water up the nose unfortunately...yuck). There were probably about 75 other swimmers out there but I think it's because one of the local stores was out there renting wetsuits to try on and test out.

Happy training to everyone else!

Q ... rockin' race report. BWAH HA HA HA! I'm sorry you were so miserable, but you really powered through. And ... you really cheered me up

Ryan ... it takes a big man to do a race. It takes a bigger man to NOT do a race. Love and prayers for your family and Dad.

Thanks Yanti Cool (*man grunt lol)

That is also one HE (double hockey sticks) of a race report!  I was going to buy the most recent Triathlete magazine to read on the plane this weekend but I may just print out your race report in color instead!

Alright fellow manatees. I am leaving this weekend for a weeklong vacation so I will probably be out of touch without any real access to a computer.  I'll miss you all.
I still plan on working out and doing some ocean swimming and of course some beach laying/relaxing.  Those are my only two priorities
I hope that everyone has a great 4th weekend!

Sorry I've been out of touch, Manatees. I'm on vacation with limited access so not really able to post and comment, etc. But, anyway....have a wonderful 4th of July all. Have a safe weekend. I figure no big races this weekend? I've not been able to write a RR from last Sunday or read anyone else's. I'll get caught up after I get back home.

Happy 4th of July weekend, Manatees!

I'm a bad girl ... although I was supposed to do a 1.2K ocean swim this morning, I kind of decided to do the 5K instead at the last minute ...

It was really, really, really, fun!!! I came in 3rd! And an Olympic swimming CHAMPION put my medal around my neck ... I felt like such a rockstar.

Race report to follow.

Hi all,

Just checking in to wish everyone a happy 4th.  Hope everyone is enjoying the long weekend!  I am loving the weather this weekend - high 80s today and 90s this week.  I actually love the hot weather!!  Well, except when it is hot and humid for a race!  Later today, I am off to do an OWS and a run on the course for my race next weekend.  Tomorrow I have a 5k.  Still chasing that 30 minute race.

Happy training!

Oh please don't make us wait too long!  Congrats on the race...I am intrigued by long distance OWS.  I don't necessarily want to DO it, but I am intrigued nonetheless...

I just had to check in to say that I had an awesome morning!  My 5k was great.  My time was 29:30!!!  My first 5k under 30 minutes!!  Cool   I have been working for that for a long time.  It may not be fast to some people, but I was so excited!!  And it was incredibly hot - I'm not sure exactly what the temperature was at that time, but it is 92º outside now!  You may have had no doubts Yanti, but I certainly did!   And you were right Quincy, I didn't even really notice how hot it was until I was done and my eyes started burning from all my sweat running into them!

It has been hot here all weekend.  I did make it out to the site of my upcoming tri this weekend.  I swam and checked out the run course.  There is one HUGE hill on the run (that we have to go up twice), but the rest goes around the lake so it is pretty flat and about 1/2 of it is shaded.  I am excited for this race because it is so close, but the course is hard.

I have been watch the TdF all weekend.  I love watching people who can really bike!  And I have a little confession to make.  My husband and I are leaving next week for France to see the last 5 stages!!  We have been planning this trip for a LONG time and I never thought it would get here.  Watching it on TV, I still can't believe that we will be there!  Has anybody been to France?  Any tips for travelling there?  Neither of us speak more than a few phrases in French, so it should be interesting!
I hope everyone had a great weekend.

Karen

Karen, I answered in the other thread.  I love Paris.  I love going anywhere, but Paris is exceptional.  My fondest memories are of wandering around ALL over the city...it's a great place to just walk from point a to point b and find amazing things in between. I am also a cafe sitter...and it doesn't get much better than Paris for hanging out with an espresso, watching people (Parisiennes are particularly interesting to look at...it's no joke that they take their grooming and clothing very seriously...yet they don't look "overdone").  Another thing I like to do when I travel anywhere is to hit grocery stores and "drug" stores...places normal people shop for everyday items.  I found the most amazing baby clothes at this place called "Monoprix" which is sort of the French equivalent of a Walgreens (yet oh so much more).

I never took one, but some of the flight crews I went with took a Seine river cruise which they enjoyed.  Your problem is going to be narrowing it down.  You could spend a summer in the Louvre alone...

I stand by my reco of Sainte Chappelle and Montmartre...one thing I haven't done but need to go back for is the flea market...apparently it's pretty monumental.  Overall, I have to say you could pack every day with a full itinerary of sightseeing, but to really enjoy it, I recommend "doing" a bit less and "being" a bit more...it's that kind of place.

SO jealous, have a wonderful time.  I can't wait to hear all about it...

YAAAAAAAY KAREN!!!! CONGRATULATIONS!!!! I love PRs!

I have been until now unable to reply because I was chartreuse with envy, both over subbing 30:00/5K AND going to FRANCE and TdF!!!!! Wow!

I haven't been to France since 2006, so not much useful advice.

Actually, I was busy writing one of my endless epics ... y'know, feel free just to look at the pics and standard-reply. Thanks!
