KathyG - 2011-02-13 10:48 PM I found this list tonight that I have seen before....

here are the results of that analysis (total positive vertical elevation change in feet):

15. Arizona 3824
17. Florida 2007

I'm not sure how accurate it is for IMLP, but having ridden IMAZ and seen IMFL these numbers seem really high for both of those course.

My 6,000' number was based on riding the course several times with a barometric altimeter.

I have Garmin 500 and for IMFL this is what my Garmin recorded...

Distance:      111.747 mi
    Elevation Gain:        902 ft
    Elevation Loss:       917 ft

Random aside -- Kathy what do you think of the Garmin 500?  I just got a Quark for the CD.01 and want the 500 as a head unit.  Shaun claims my 310XT will work just as well -- I don't think so.

Do you think the 500 is worth it?

I had a 310xt I used when I first got my Quarq. I didn't like it so I bought a Garmin 500 which I used July through November. I recently bought a Joule as I didn't like the Garmin 500 for a number of reasons biggest issue was average power on the Garmin would be different than when I downloaded it into wko+.

Garmin 500 is nice because you can calibrate your Quarq on it. 310xt I don't believe you can do it. I do like the rolling screen on Garmin 500...so I could do overall ride data, and another screen with intervals on it.

I have used Power Tap little yellow computer for 5 years and am used to it with training with power and Joule is like LYC with wko+ on board. Joule has TSS, NP and IF on board which for a number junkie is sweet.

Got the results back from my MRI this morning.

Bruise on the upper laterial side of my fibula, small tear on the upper part of my gastrocenemius(upper calf muscle) and a complete chronic ACL tear.

Not at all what I was expecting to hear based on the lateral instability and relative lack of pain. I though I had a LCL strain/minor tear, not a major problem with my ACL.

I have no idea how this is going to affect my training. I haven't had any real issues yet other than instability if I try to change direction too quickly while running. I'm scheduled to see a specialist tomorrow morning so I'll see what he has to say.

Placid is definitely not pushing 8000' elevation gain. More like 6000. If I remember correctly, it was like 5800'.

Oddly enough, the elevation gain is twice as much on the second loop. Or feels like it.

Hey guys! Sorry I haven't been around lately. I've been getting smacked around a bit between training and med school. School definately picked up with musculoskeletal block and now I am on neuro.

Updates: ran a HM in Carlsbad, CA in Jan 1:53:51. PR by about 6min compared to a HM done last May. Pretty happy with it considering I had only really been back training for 3 weeks-ish and I was tripped at 5km in and bruised up my hip a bit.

On my 3rd week of "build" right now. Last week included some pretty high intensity stuff, mainly thanks to swimming. I still haven't decided if I am going to swim club in March or just start to really focus in on more IM specific swimming. It is getting a bit much to constantly have to work hard in practice rather than having more recovery swim sessions. But I have a few more days to make a definative decision.

Slowly bringing up the bike and run volume. I haven't had any gauntlet bikes yet--so far max 2hrs on the trainer at a time. Might throw a 3hr in this weekend...we will see.

Heading off to Vegas for a few days next week because I have a break from school...so that will be a bit of a recovery period...training wise

Hope everyone else's training is going well!

I just did my first outside run of 2011. It was our first warmer day in W. Michigan and there were a lot of runners that went outside and took advantage of the nicer weather. As I was running I was thinking about different running forms; heel strikers, midfoot runners, and forefoot runners. I was also thinking about body position, arm movement, and stride length. Which brings me to my question. How many of you worry about running form and try to improve it? Or do you just run however you feel comfortable and not worry about how your foot hits the road?

Here's a good article on ironman run mechanics (including body position) -- you may find it interesting:

I don't worry about it, but I try to pay attention. Function follows form, as they say.

Q: Full suit or two piece? And why?

I have used a full piece for three seasons and during all 5 of my HIM I have never had to go (don't worry, I was hydrated) other than while swimming.

Would an argument for going two piece be the bathroom issue?.....I don't really plan on going on myself while running. I WILL stop and go.

Thanks!

In one of Matt Fitzgerald's books he talks about "conscious stride manipulation" and how after a long period of time, our bodies naturally adapt to the most efficient stride.

Before reading his book, I made a conscious effort to keep a high cadence and try to land underneath myself.  I stopped for a while just to see what would happen if I didn't think about it and the heel striking that ensued was painful.  I'm back to consciously "manipulating" my stride if you will.  It doesn't even take me much effort, a higher cadence just feels more comfortable.

If anyone is wanting a powermeter for LP, I'll be selling my like new WheelBuilder wheel in a couple weeks once I get the cranks switched on the Quarq I just bought.  I figured I might as well offer it here before going to the classifieds or ebay.

I never used to worry about my mechanics and just ran.  Now that I've been working with a Coach a lot of my first few weeks of running on my IM plan have been focusing on form and cadence.  When I do long runs I take 15 seconds and count my left foot strike a few times during the run.  The goal is to get 22 or higher.  I normally just make 22 so there is some improvement for me to make.  She also tells me to run proud and I tend to lift my chin up too high  when I get fatigued so I focus on bringing it down a bit.

I have to say, after the past 6 1/2 weeks of working on drills and form (in SBR) I have seen tremendous improvements and I only wish I focused more on this stuff years ago!!  Happy training everyone!

Oh that's interesting. I wonder if it varies depending on your height.

When I'm running I worry about: do not trip, do not fall, do not drop gu, do not sideswipe pedestrian, oh and do not stop... etc. so that doesn't leave much time to worry about form. I went to a running clinic and was thoroughly confused and demotivated by all the physics. So I leave running as the one sport that I dont worry too  much about technique in... There's enough of that involved in swimming and biking for me... so I just run the way I feel best.

Just had a nice run around the National Mall today. It's 75 and partly cloudy out... makes me very excited for spring and training outdoors consistently!

I just finished an nice outside ride with some friends and was about 1.5miles from home when my rear derailleur snapped right off my frame.  Couldn't have been a worse ending since my friends all kept going and I had to walk my broken bike back home.  My B16 frame is less than a year old and is now junk.  I really hope Felt replaces it.
