Kathy, glad to hear your run went well today. The only time we run on the treadmill is when it rains or is cold and wet. Otherwise I'd rather be outside running.

Swim test, aqua jog and bike on the schedule for today. 2 workouts down and 1 to go.

Kathy glad to hear eveything felt good for the run.

Fred, when you say you're doing low cadence work on the trainer, what type of rpm's are you targetting, and what's the primary goal of low cadence vs. your normal tempo?

Curious to hear what types/brands of tires and tubes people use.  There has been a pretty detailed thread on this recently and it sounds like rolling resistance varies a good bit based on the tire and tube.  I knew that there was a difference but have run Conti 4000S as both trainer and race tire with butyl tubes.  Thinking of ordering a "faster" tire for my race wheels and possibly some latex tubes for the race set up. Although, I have not seen any latex tubes with 80mm valve stems-I prefer to not use extenders.  Would appreciate any input or thoughts.

Get some latex tubes with removable core that you can add on the right length stems for your race wheels. I plan to switch over to them this year. I'd have to search around to find who carries them. ST folks recommended going that route. I had 3 latex tubes from probikekit.com that were new so I went with those.

Tires I just asked my coach and I use Pro 3s. My Zipps came with others that were equal but I had heck of time getting them off my rims so switched to Pro 3s which were much easier. You need tires that seat well on your rims as otherwise you can get drag there.

I had latex tubes with extenders and had some leaking issues. Having a tiny wrench to make sure valve extenders were on tight worked fine for my IM, IM aquabike and Oly later in the season. I have Zipp 404s.

Latex tubes are more porous so they don't hold air as well. Overnight you will lose more PSI than you would with butyl tubes. Strange IM morning my latex tubes were at 115 like I wanted them...wondering if gauge was different.

You may want to invest in wheel cover for your rear. They are only $100 or less.

Continental Grand Prix 4000s on my training wheels, Zipp tangente 23mm tubulars (latex tubes) with zipp valve extenders on my race wheels. I like the tangentes, I am not so wild about the GPs. They are ok, and bombproof, but I rode on Pro2s and then Pro3s for a number of years before that, and in my own estimation they feel like they blow the GPs away in comfort and rolling resistance. Not sure why I switched really - except maybe the michelins  seemed to get nicked up a bit too much for training. I miss them though, and after my trainer wears out the rear GP this winter, I will probably switch back. The Michelins are just so nice on long rides - I think they would be a great race tire as well.

Will pretend I didn't read that.

Ouch! OK - I am down with the Packers all the way to the Super Bowl.
At least I have a little "high" left from the Auburn Win... Laughing

Fred Doucette - 2011-01-16 7:39 AM Michelin Pro3 with latex tubes for me. I ride 404 clinchers.

I was really impressed/surprised with the Packers domination of Atlanta?

I thought Matt Ryan looked pretty terrible.

Kathy will be cheering for the Pats today no doubt

I race the Pro3's with latex also and like them.  I've used these tubes with good luck: http://www.probikekit.com/advsearch.php?AQUERY=latex

Had fun watching the game last night with my kids.  I was surprised by the Packers' play last night as well.   Rodgers was super sharp in that dome, and the Falcons seemed off their game.  Rooting for the Seahawks today, and expecting the Pats to beat the Jets.

Have a good day everyone.

I need to figure out latex tubes and extenders this season too. How do you do your spare (if you carry one)? I'll have a deep front needing one and a regular back with disk cover that can't use one. Pittsburg/Baltimore got the whole city riled up here. Not a fan of either team myself...I grew up in NH, so it's Pats all the way for me too!!!

Joe - I road with a disc and a Jet6 front.  Used standard valves for both and carried a butyl spare with a standard valve (pre-wrapped the valve with plumber's tape) and a zipp valve extender.  (Apparently CO2 will rapidly lead through latex tubes, so the spare should be other if using CO2.)

Bring spare butyls not latex if using CO2. I just get spares with right valve length so no changing or moving valve extenders if I get a flat in a race.

I was thinking that, but I'm just worried about the different lengths necessary.  I have 80mm valves for my front 404, but the rear is a regular rim with a wheel cover and I think the wheelcover cut out is too short for the 80 mm.  Would you cut the wheel cover cutout deeper?

I'd call wheel builders and ask the question.

I use wheelcover on my 404s  front and back and don't use the screw & attachment on hole next to the valve cut out so I have a bit more wiggle room to pump up the tire. Over time I've gotten better at it but it is tight for space.

If you want to bring only one tube, you could put the valve extender on the spare with plumbers tape in your kit then take it off if the flat is the back. I often take two spare tubes on HIM or IMs but having one of each isn't as good as having two that you could use on either wheel.

Hello all-got a nice 40 mile ride in this morning outside.  Probably some yoga/stretching later to end the training week.

I will probably go with a different tire and latex tubes on my race wheels.  When I was riding Hed Jet 90 I used tubes with removeable core and a "tufo" (I think) valve extender. It screwed down onto the original stem and had a valve on the end.  Worked just like a really long stem-always used the plumbers tape to make agood seal.  I will probably do the same with the latex tubes. Then can carry butyl with 80mm stem as a spare.  My wheels are 58 deep, very similar to Zipp 404, so no extender needed with 80 stem.

Been a bit of a movie weekend here. Rented and watched 1) The American (George Clooney)-not great, didn't seem like much was happening but may have just been deeper than I'm capable of understanding; and 2) The Social Network-really enjoyed it.  Did not know too much of the background to the Facebook story so it was interesting.  Of course hard to know how much is fictionalized. This afternoon we are going to see The King's Speech.

Looking forward to Jets/Pats.  Tired of hearing about and listening to the Jets..... so go Pats!  I'm a long suffering Redskins fan so nice to pull for a winner once in a while.  Hope I don't jinx them.

Hello All,
Like others here its been a busy week and continued to be busy into the weekend.  I've completed the workouts for today, three mile run and 3000 in the pool; after lunch we're headed to the National Western Stock Show to see the Wild West Extravaganza and as much of the exhibits as the kids can tolerate, should be a good time. If the will possesses me I'll do some core work and stretching tonight.
Happy training everyone!

We are

We live about 6-8 miles from Foxboro Stadium and many Pat's defensive players live in the neighborhood next to mine.  I sometimes will do what I named my Pats run and run by all their houses most are quite modest but a couple. Traffic gets pretty tricky around game time and our son works at the mall that is part of the stadium. Kraft is all about making money, there is movie theater, office center, two shopping malls, lots of high end restaurants, and a motel right next to the stadium.

Just back from lunch with friends.  The Hawks/Bears game was on.   Looks like the Packers are headed to cold Soldier field to play da Bears.  That will be a tough one.

Good luck to your Pats today Kathy (not that they need any!).  Interesting that you live near some of the players.

My parents live across the street from the Packers field goal kicker in Green Bay.  We often joke about how they should go see how he's doing after a game where he screws up, etc.  Fun stuff.

Nice.  My friend from college's family lives around the block from Big Papi.  I walked by his house several times but never spotted him .  She also has season tickets to the Pats.../start bragging/ I've freeloaded my way to several games, with one being a playoff and one being the Superbowl against the Eagles  /end bragging/

Adam Vinatieri the Pat's kicker from a few years ago lived about 1.5 blocks from us. Halloween many folks would drive over to our neighborhood and just trick or treat at his house. When he only had one son, he would stand outside with his son handing out candy and very nice treats for the kids. During all games they always had a car from RI in their driveway. I think Patriots encouraged or arranged for that so their players houses were safe.

It was interesting to have a famous player in our neighborhood. We had even looked at building on the lot his house built when we moved to MA.

One of the branches of our Y, in Foxboro, where I do most of my swims, Krafts donated a lot to have it built and one of the former players teaches a strength class for teenagers.

Hope everyone is having good weekend!

Didn't do anything Saturday (for me I really really stick to taking one day off a week)... today did almost 2 hours on trainer, 25 min strength, 35 min yoga all back to back... definitely learning what bonking feels like Smile... I think I need to take in more calories for all this (I think I get blindsided because I don't think of yoga or strength as "hard" but at the end of this workout was definitely feeling hypoglycemic.. to be clear I didn't go completely bare: ate like a third of a cliff bar before getting on bike and one gel on bike but that was it).  No work tomorrow, yay, ...will try to run like 10.

Fred good question about TM (I am one of least experienced but I'll put in .02) :  this time last year I was training for a marathon and because I am a wimp about the cold I did a lot of TM work....I think it definitely was a bit detrimental... I didn't do any incline and was just not good with hills.

I guess I should be a Jets fan but kinda pulling for Pats! kate

Fred Doucette - Do you think treadmill running really translates to outside running fitness?

Absolutely. I dont think it is as hard on the body as running on some outside surfaces but from a fitness standpoint I think it translates. I think it would take me some time for my body to acclimate from running solely on a treadmill to running exclusively outside as I feel more stress from impact when running outside.  No real problem when I mix it up though.  You can't always rely on the speed indicated by treadmills so I rely more on HR to determine my effort level.

"The King's Speech" was excellent.
