Ken,
Yeah I am not looking forward to the hills. I think there is a sign that says "Welcome to Mt St Helen's" or something similar.

n.k - 2012-05-10 3:44 PM Hey everybody, so... I've missed my last two training sessions.  I'm pretty bummed about it (missing two session in a row is RARE for me).  But I know its been completely nessacry.  I don't want to go into too many details [though I doubt anyone is combing triathlete forums for this information], but basically a student of mine had a large crisis on Tuesday afternoon.  With the direction of our school councilor, a few county child welfare employees, and the police my family has had to step up to help this student.  So training has taken a back seat.  Add to that already stressful and intense situation that we are moving in the next few weeks and that its the end of the school year.  Yeah, so its been stressful.

Not sure that I'm looking for advice or anything... I guess I just need a reminder that life does happen.  And if I miss a couple training training (or even a week or two [gasp!]), that I will be fine.

Nole, its good to know that our schools are full of caring people willing to sacrifice of themselves for the sake of young people.

Thanks... didn't mean to fish for compliments or anything.  I was just feeling a little bummed about not being able to work out.  Because I've been so involved in this situation, I have felt a ton of extra stress.  And that means that I am doing anything I can to cope... and (with beer not being a wise choice) that means I've been eating.  Ugh.  I had a super long event at school yesterday evening, so we ordered pizzas for me and the students putting on the event... I almost ate an entire pizza by myself.  Blah.

But whatever, right?  Live happens, you deal as best as you can, and then you move on.  I was able to get a quick run in this morning and it felt great.  So that's good.

Thanks for the well wishes.  If you are are the praying type, please send some my way... and more importantly to this student.  Otherwise I'll take all the positive thoughts you got!

Thanks guys!

So I picked up my shirt and race bib for my 5k tomorrow and I am dying laughing. My bib number is 69. I have the best tshirt to wear it with. It's a tshirt from Mighty Taco, it's a buffalo taco place that is the best, and the shirt say "Some like it hot". I figured the 69 under it is just going to be awesome!

Good morning and Happy Mothers Day to all the Mom's in the group!! I hope you are spoiled rotten today! Smile

Had a great ride up to the race yesterday, probably cost me some but it was just for fun anyways.  Not sure what I am going to do today, I am dressed to go for a run, but may bag it in exchange for spending some time with Connie this morning.  Depends on what she wants to do.

What are the rest of you doing today?

Peter, how did the race go?

Happy Mothers Day to all you ladies here today! Without you ladies us guys couldn't do anything!

Ken, what cost you up the ride yesterday? Do whatever Cinnie wants you to do, hopefully a run is part of it.

Yesterday's race...I have to say that I absolutely hate the place it is at. It is so damn hilly! My time sucked! I had to walk part of it. I was just really disappointed in it. The course ended up being only 2.85 miles long and my time was 37 min. I cannot do hills or trails well. To be honest I am real down in my runs. By down I mean sad. I am just doubting myself lately.

Happy Mothers' Day ladies!

Peter - train through that slump. Try to keep those runs fun. Maybe try new routes? Music? I like audio books for steady runs...

Trainings been going really well for me lately. Finished a pretty big week with a long run this AM. As promised to Eileen, done by 7:30 this AM to feed/dress kiddos. While my legs are holding up, the dislocated shoulder is giving me lots of random pain. Gonna see the Ortho for a follow up.

On the downside, i think i overdid it on my running partner today. 4 miles left Charlie, the 9 yr old lab, limping and mopey. I guess he's not a puppy any more, but i think his really problem is lack of consistency. Because my training schedule is tight, we have been skipping out on his 2-3 weekday short runs (1-1.5 miles). I start each long run on the weekends with 2-3 on the trails, where he can keep his own pace, then 1 mile home so he can lay around while i finish. I think i need to give hime more shorter runs, or just let him sleep in.

happy training!

Bill,

I think the major part of my problems is right between my ears. You guys know the area. It's what we guys say we use but our gf/wives/partners doubts we even have one...the brain. I truly think that is where my source of my problem is. I just can't get past it though. I tell myself, are you healthier, are you doing more then a year ago, and stuff like that but it just doesn't get in there. I want more. I want better of myself. Can I ever beat Lance or Crowie? Nope, but I want them to have to work harder to win. My body just isn't there yet and that is the part that frustrates me all the time.

What are the rest of you doing today?

Peter, how did the race go?

I had Edible Arrangement sent some lovely fruit basket to my Mom and Stepmom. They both were surprised and really liked it. My Mom had a dual special day because it's also her birthday.   It's does makes me miss her more when I'm living here and they live on east coast.   I got to talk to her on FaceTime today, so that was nice.

I had a FANTASTIC MTB ride today. BEAUTIFUL weather (very little wind...finally!!!!) and at a nice 70-75 degree weather.   I got to ride my new MTB on her maiden voyage.

On the "easy" trail, there's this huge sloping rock right in the middle of the trail. No easy way around it. It's easier to go down from that rock than it is to go up.  Last time I was there, I could not get UP over the rock. This time, a friend show me it's easier to get down.  So instead of being a wuss, I tried my best, I gotta learn someday, might as well be today.

I got over it, and I was like "YES!!", but forgot to pedal and twisted the bike a little bit and fell.  I have couple scrapes on my arm and a big fat bruise on my leg the size of my hand. It's gonna hurt tomorrow. But HEY...I DID IT, and I think that's what matters more.   Looks like I'm not going to be able to run tomorrow, and if I do, it'll be a super easy one.

The one thing BIG thing I really like about MTB is, it makes me work a little harder to get out of my comfort zone and not be "afraid" of going harder, balancing, "be one with the bike".   I carry that feeling when I need to harder workouts. I hate "working hard", and currently learning to get out of that and sometimes I gotta work hard to get better.  Does that make sense? :-P

Not a Mom, but I am a mom to 6 adopted animals!

Hugs to everyone!

It's okay. It's a way for you to learn.  How long have you been running and how often have you run? I bet you didn't do much hill training (I didn't either before I did Irongirl, and I regret for not learning more, but I don't dwell on it, and just enjoyed my PR).   That's okay....you're faster than someone on the couch!

More consistent runs, the better you'll get. It takes time.

Again, you're faster than someone on the couch.  Perhaps change it up a little and do hiking, MTB (hee hee), River Rafting, etc, and do running as well. You'll notice you will feel better and more energetic.

Don't let it get you down Peter! Sometimes you are going to feel good after a race other times it just makes you wonder why we do this. The guy I rode up with yesterday has done that race and has the same opinion of the course that you did.Do some runs on a route that builds your confidence, but challenge yourself too!

That was a nice gift for your Mom's!I have the same issue on the bike, it is easy to slip into a comfort zone and not challenge yourself on the bike. I do much better on the trainer.

Well.....

I'm back from Brown County. Unfortunately, a day early. I went down hard and hurt my shoulder. It was sore enough this morning I couldn't ride. So I went home. it doesn't feel broken. I've had some problems with it before. Not sure exactly how bad it is. I know I can't swim bike or run! Hopefully, I can give it a few days of RICE and get back at it in time to train for Racine.

I will say....BC is INCREDIBLE! I had no idea there was that much climbing to be done in IN. It was just beautiful. Trails at great. There's something for everyone there. Easy trails and REALLY hard trails. It's mapped really well too. GREAT place. Definitely have to do it again!

Happy mothers day to all the moms out there;

Took the week off--not intentionally, but due to being sick part of the week and then feeling just week and dehydrated the rest of the week.  When I finally felt up to par to ride 20 miles today, I got a flat at the five mile marker.

Last week is behind me, and this week will be stellar!

Peter, I know exactly what you mean. I was at a party on sat and my wife and I were talking with a serious athlete couple. They both have done ironman and he did a 100 mile run last year. The lady was trying to convince my wife to do a trail run there for her first ever 5k. I told my wife when we left that I would never let her do that. These events are there to be fun and build confidence. You need to be challenged, but not stomped in the nuts. Next one will be better!

I hope you get to go back and get some good riding in some time, it sounds like a great place to ride!

I also pick and choose races. Then I train for them. My Oct race is hilly - really hilly for Long Island and I'm going to need to train on the hills. I have a special route that goes up and down and I will be running/riding that route often later this summer.

You don't have to do great or even good every race. A lot of people pick A & B races. They have fun w/ the B's, no pressure and train/taper and really go for it on the A's. Something to think about in the future.

Remember (I need to remind myself of this) most of the time you are only trying to beat yourself. I try my hardest to only beat my time and not to beat myself up for the would of could of's......

We leave Thursday for Florida.  Big vaction to go with Florida 70.3.  My wife and girls are super excited about the trip to Disney and the Disney cruise the weekend after the race.  I'm not real sure if I'm excited or extra nervous about the race or just very ready for the vaction.  Could be a little of both.  Either way, they are both coming up in a hurry.

Hey everyone,

I am going to be absent for a little while. Unfortunately my GF and I have decided to part ways. We've been together for 6 years and were planning on getting married this July. I am hurt, I am sad and I just don't know what I am going to do. I am still hoping that a large hole opens up and swallows me. This actually hurts more then my divorce many years ago.  I will talk to you guys later.

kenj - 2012-05-09 4:02 AM Thanks for the well wishes, I do appreciate it.  I am not worried about missing races, they will still be there next year and with any luck I will still catch my A race for the year.

Ken, so sorry to hear about your shoulder!  I am glad you are still thinking about your A race though!  It won't be anywhere near as fun if you aren't there.

gator22 - 2012-05-10 5:43 AM Sorry if I missed the response to the bear spray question. Robin, I think that stuff is intended for black bears, not grizzly. I have used the same product on people and it is not the magic in a can that everyone thinks. You are more than likely to get it on your own face and eyes and enhance your trouble. Talk to the dec guys and gals. I know with black bears you make noise and challenge them. I think with grizzly you lay still and play dead. I have had many bear encounters in the Adirondacks and I am still here

I guess when in Rochester I better behave!

Hows the training going Kirk?

Coming along. I actually have a couple two mile, outdoor, non stop runs under my belt. Next stop : Western States!

Smile  Thanks for the laugh.. That was a good one!

In the effort to keep up with all of you, I am going to set aside some time each day at work to catch up on all the posts. I need to get my priorities strait! Tongue out   .  Congrats to all those who raced over the past couple of weeks.

I managed to get in five hours of training in the last few days which for me at this point is pretty good. I did this while also traveling over the weekend for work so I think my focus is starting to come back.

I hope all of the knees, and shoulders start feeling better soon!
