NRG42 - 2012-08-30 9:09 AM TAn what is the biggest group of people you ever have spoke in front of?  I think tonight will be the largest group that I have ever spoke in front of.  Maybe 300?

Ack!  I had to speak in front of about 200 at a work team building meeting.  We were mostly drunk and we had to tell the group our most embarrassing moment .  In hindsight I should have picked my like 4th most embarrassing moment because after I shared my moment THAT moment became my most embarrassing moment.

Booze and a lot of people watching and sharing........does not sound like a good idea!

No.  It is not.  Funny at times though.  And we were encouraged to be "open" and with a baby pool full of good German beer provided by the owner ..  it was easier!

Don't be afraid to cry .. it would be an honest emotion, no?  I'm sure others will miss him too.

Yes, I am hoping for the cracked voice and maybe eyes welled with tears, opposed to the unable to get through the entire speech and I am last so the actual toast!

A half a glass of wine will take the edge off too.

For me, I've found that if I try to lower and project my voice a bit it helps. Try to act like a news anchor - that's my tip for the day.

Start drinking now.....that's my advice.

I would be passed out before the party even started.........and nobody like a really really drunk girl.  Oh forget it!

I've spoken to a room of 800 plus. Honestly once you get above a certain number the game changes a bit and it doesn't make a huge difference if you add another 100 into the crowd. My advice - take your time and be comfortable with a bit of silence that allows your audience to process what you just said and gives you time to get your next thought together. I promise you what feels like an eternity to you will come across as an appropriate pause and let the audience know that you are in control. Last thought - almost always the audience wants you to do well. We tend to forget that sometimes.

I'm TOTALLY a pro gun guy - owned'm, shot'm, watch every TV show I can about them, took classes on them, got educated about my local/federal gun laws.

But yikes, some people still scare me.  Just LOOKING for an excuse.

Advice taken.  Thx

You can do it! Don't be afraid to stumble or get emotional. The speech is for him not for the 300 so just act like you are just talking to him.

+1. Try and focus on him and forget about the rest. For me - if I can block out the non-essential people I can focus better and not be nervous.

Think about speaking slower.  One thing I notice when I get in front of a large group (biggest has been about 1200) is that I tend to "hurry".

Slow down, pick out a face or two in the audience that you know, and speak to them.

I have given and spoke at business functions and seminars or done the sale pitch thing where the content of the presentation is in the form of power point or concrete facts.

But this is from the heart, filled with 15 years of someone who I call my confidant, mentor and friend....who I've spent more time with than ANY other person of conscious years of my life.  Yes, even my parents........it different...isn't it?
