Master 3058 South Alabama | Subject: RE: Slornow and Wannabefaster's Winter Mentor Group-CLOSED No treadmill for me today. I was scheduled for an easy run this afternoon but my right calf was tight after yesterday's run so I decided to do an easy spin on the bike instead. Hopefully it will be better in a day or two. But, it was beautiful here today and would have been a great day to run outside. Treadmill workouts go by much faster for me when I have an interval workout....something that breaks the workout up some. Just getting on and running, even with a TV in front of me the time seems to drag. Hard bike intervals on tap for tomorrow. Hope everyone has a great weekend |

Champion 7595 Columbia, South Carolina | Subject: RE: Slornow and Wannabefaster's Winter Mentor Group-CLOSED Jason -- that's a very cool workout. Some people would call it a 'progression run' but 'boiling the frog' is way cooler! There was no boiling of frogs or anything else for me today. I ran 6 miles easy in 33 degrees and rain. Nasty, nasty, nasty, weather. I'd rather run in snow. |

Regular 134 Wichita, KS | Subject: RE: Slornow and Wannabefaster's Winter Mentor Group-CLOSED I routinely "boil the frog" and it does provide a way to sneak up on the pace. Great tempo workout. I also use the treadmill in front of the TV. If there is something good on, it makes the time go faster. I run really hard during comercials to break things up. I've occassionally pleasantly discovered I've spent 2 hours on the thing and my movie is over. Training - Did 1000yd swim and 4 mile run before lunch. Finally got in my strength work in tonight before supper. Overall, a good day. |

Some of you have seen my "Hoos Dozen" goals for 2013 (check out the top of my training log). As of this evening, I can declare Goal #4 is officially complete!
Thanks to everyone in the group for support and accountability -- only 11 more to go.... Scott

Extreme Veteran 1190 Silicon Valley | Subject: RE: Slornow and Wannabefaster's Winter Mentor Group-CLOSED Due to the weather I have been stuck inside for a few days so even on a dreary overcast day I took the opportunity to hit the road. I took one of my old bike routes (only 13 miles) and added a five mile mostly hills section on the front. It felt OK on the hills but remarkably good on the flats after that. I may try to added it to the end as well and see how that goes. Tomorrow will be an interesting day. The forecast is for rain and it is a run day. No access to a treadmill tomorrow so I may get wet but I will get my run in. I am too slow with too far to go to skip even one run day. I hope everyone has a great weekend. |

Master 2177 | Subject: RE: Slornow and Wannabefaster's Winter Mentor Group-CLOSED Woo hoo, Scott! Fantastic progress. Treadmill: I have no problem with running on it. Had to do most of my half training one because of husband being deployed and having only a certain amount of time to train. I still use it when time is an issue or when I want to do some strength work too afterwards. At the couple's retreat. Got in 5 miles on the treadmill at the fitness center. Whew! Member 432 Calgary, AB | Subject: RE: Slornow and Wannabefaster's Winter Mentor Group-CLOSED Thanks for the well wishes all. I was ~267 when I signed up for my first tri. So nearly 30 pounds gone. Who would have thought that eating less and moving more would have such an impact... Goal for the year is to hit 219. (or as we say in Canada -- a "metric Gretzky" -- 99 kg) Definitely looking forward to racing without carrying the excess load. Scott. |

Master 3058 South Alabama | Subject: RE: Slornow and Wannabefaster's Winter Mentor Group-CLOSED Scott-I'm late to the party but that's fantastic! Good work. Absolutely beautiful here today. Sunny and 70. Did a trainer ride this morning then wife, daughter and I went to lunch at a place on the river. So nice to sit outside for a tasty lunch in late January. Its not always this nice in January. Tomorrow's forecast looks similar so I'm planning on doing an easy ride outside.....first ride outside of the garage in 2 months. |

Master 3205 ann arbor, michigan | Subject: RE: Slornow and Wannabefaster's Winter Mentor Group-CLOSED My wife woke up this morning so sick I almost took her to the ER. My daughter's hamster, which was five years old--some kind of longevity record for a hamster, died today. I have not trained for a second but my quads are aching from the 200+ trips up and down the stairs to attend to everyone's needs. It has been a kind of lousy day. Wah, wah, wah. I think things are relatively stable now and I am going to try to sneak downstairs for 90 minutes of pure pain and suffering on the trainer. I hope it goes well. I need a good session to raise my spirits Of course it isn't hard to remind myself that I have it pretty darn good in spite of an occasional off day. |

New user 410 | Subject: RE: Slornow and Wannabefaster's Winter Mentor Group-CLOSED Tough day with a sick wife and loss of a pet, glad you can turn to exercise for coping. I had a good workout today. 4mile walk with 1/4 mile of it jogging. Just adding jogging this week and plan to increase by 1/10th mile jogging per week during the first two miles of my walking. I want to do it slowly since the jogging is new for me and I still have weight to lose. Any input is welcome. This may be increasing too slowly. Then I swam 300 yards, not much but started that not long ago too. Signed up for some individual swim instruction today also, four 30 minute sessions coming up. I am enjoying this very much and I can already see improvements. I feel great!! |

Expert 866 | Subject: RE: Slornow and Wannabefaster's Winter Mentor Group-CLOSED Scott - excellent work!!! Treadmill for me today as well. Well, it's now official, I pulled the trigger on IM Wisconsin. Had to pay the $1300 but it works well with my schedule, dropping son off at college, etc.. This, plus IM AZ in November will be a great way to complete the year. I believe I will be able to recover adequately between the two, based on my previous IM experiences. Given I successfully complete both, my IM's completed will be 12, which then gives me a shot at the legacy program next year. I decided to get into triathlons ten years ago, inspired by watching footage of Kona races. As a MOP Age Grouper, this is the only way I will ever get there! So be it! It is what it is. Tomorrow is a day off work so I will sleep in, then swim in the late morning. Jim |

Master 3058 South Alabama | Subject: RE: Slornow and Wannabefaster's Winter Mentor Group-CLOSED Jim-looking forward to following your journey through IMWI and IMAZ. You will do great. Getting ready to head outside to ride. Nothing planned other than 90 minutes or so of riding. No intervals, no watt goals, no garage....Hoping this helps with my recent funk on the bike. Just getting out and riding. |

Expert 866 | Subject: RE: Slornow and Wannabefaster's Winter Mentor Group-CLOSED 4000 yard swim done. Got out of pool at 1 mile point to call it a day then something made me decide to jump back in and keep going. I wish I could tap into this "switch" that sometimes pulls me out of a funk. Finished swim with all sorts of drills. Focused on kicking on back and balance, as well as working on minimizing stroke count. I'm exhausted but feel I made progress. Added bonus is I beat the Sunday crowd and managed to have my favorite lane all to myself the whole time! Jim |

Master 3058 South Alabama | Subject: RE: Slornow and Wannabefaster's Winter Mentor Group-CLOSED Nice job Jim-that kind of work seems to warrant a nap! Had a nice ride outside. Workout was to be 90 minutes easy....but I felt like I needed to work hard, at least part of the time. 25 min warm up/45 min @HIM watts 220-225/remainder Z2. Maintained 228w through the HIM pace interval and it wasn't miserable but my legs were feeling it toward the end. Long way to go if I'm going to maintain that effort level over 56 miles and have a decent run. Another beautiful day here......guess I should get some chores done

Extreme Veteran 1190 Silicon Valley | Subject: RE: Slornow and Wannabefaster's Winter Mentor Group-CLOSED Well I just got the crap kicked out of me for my workout today. My LBS does two weekend rides. Sat is a 15-18 mile ride at about 15 mph. Sunday's is usually a 25 mile ride in the 19-20 mph. That's faster than I ride on my training ride and at the upper end distance wise but knowing we would be drafting I thought I would give it a go. So I rode the 3 miles to the store and there were only six including me for the ride. Maybe a temp in the high 30's when I left the house had something to do with it? I was hanging in fine. Two hills had me at the back of the pack but I was not holding them up. At one point I actually led the pack for about three miles. We were well on to our return when one of the guys wanted to know if anyone was interested in taking a detour. A five mile addition to the ride with the first three a steady hill. I figured in for a penny in for a pound so he and I split off. He left me in the dust half way up but was nice enough to wait at the top of the hill. Well the ride ended up being just under 35 miles instead of 25 and I averaged 19.6 mph. I guess these are the things I am going to have to do to get better so I will be joining them again next Sunday. Everybody enjoy what's left of the weekend. Edited by Stuartap 2013-01-27 1:35 PM |

Member 2098 Simsbury, Connecticut | Subject: RE: Slornow and Wannabefaster's Winter Mentor Group-CLOSED EEK! Miss 2 days around here and so much catching up to do..... Jason - your "boil the frog" treadmill workouts sound like the type of workout that would keep me entertained! Looking forward to the next increase or decrease tends to keep my mind off the actual time; hope your wife feels better and no one else catches what she has Scott - congrats on the weight loss - awesome job!! Michael - love the treadmill desk! I keep thinking about building a desk over the spin bike for the days I work from home......hmmm you may have inspired me..... Mary - isn't it great when you see improvements? Congrats - keep up the hard work. Jim - you are an animal! TWO IMS! Stuart - I love shop rides where they push you to your limits to keep up - and then wait at the top when you can't Nice job. Me? I snowshoed to (almost) the top of Mt Snow last night via moonlight and a headlamp. It was so beautiful from the top of the Ridge trail looking out over the valley light up by the moon. Not to mention the awesome workout and I sweat my a$$ off Back to the grind tomorrow! Happy and of weekend!! Edited by mtnbikerchk 2013-01-27 3:02 PM |

Master 3205 ann arbor, michigan | Subject: RE: Slornow and Wannabefaster's Winter Mentor Group-CLOSED So many congratulations in order. This continues to be a highly motivated and extremely motivating group to 'hang out' with. I just did my second swim of the week in a local high school pool. Two different high schools, two different pools. Both times I was significantly faster than I am in my usual pool. I have always felt like my regular pool is slow and this kind of confirms it for me. On both occasions I was maintaining much higher paces, at slightly lower effort, than I can ever hit in my everyday pool. Just an interesting observation. I am going to bring my tape measure one day and check the length. |
