Extreme Veteran 1648 | Subject: RE: Beer Drinker Appreciation Society (BDAS) - Open Originally posted by adempsey10 Originally posted by Moonrocket Originally posted by novaboy Hey folks, Yesterday I did a max effort run. 6.5km over rolling terrain. For me it was fast, 3mins faster than the last time I ran the same route 10 days ago. I'm almost 47 years old and my HR spiked at 202bpm coming up the last hill to finish. 14mins of the run I was in 174-188bpm range. Anyone else have a high HR when running? My resting rate is 45bpm. I know I'm still getting back into shape again, but even when I was younger just before my last Ironman, my HR seemed to be very high for the effort. My easy, long runs my HR averages high 150's to mid 160's. Cheers Terry I have a crazy high heart rate- I rarely use a HR monitor- but last spring ran with one and was at 180 while chatting with friends and jogging (I'm 40). I'm on the edge of pulling the trigger on a Scosche Rhythm+ Heart Rate Monitor Armband. I can't stand the chest ones. I think it would be good to get a feel for it. Even in college my coach though I couldn't do pulse since I was always way high. Kate
Like I said in my HR post, your max HR and work rate HR is largely determined by genetics. You both are perfect examples why the whole 220 minus age thing doesn't work. Some people have naturally high HRs. Frankly I surprised that you (novaboy) have such a high HR and such a low resting HR. That means you have a massive HR reserve, which theoretically is very good. I know I said before that HR work rates vary by person and are not objective, but generally, the lower the working HR, the more fit you are. But this is relative of course to your natural rhythm. A lower working HR means your heart pumps more efficiently. Chris Froome's HR at his functional threshold (about 420watts) is only in the mid 140s. That's insanely low but his max HR is probably only 170-175.
If you're (moonrocket) hitting 180 and still having a chat, that makes me think you have a high natural HR, and with quality training you'd probably see yourself running the same pace (and effort) with a lower HR (maybe 170) but you'll never be Chris Froome low (which says nothing about potential, just emphasizing the point about genetics). Have you ever been tested or told you have tachycardia? If your resting HR is high (90s-100s) you might have that. I'm the opposite. I have bradycardia, a naturally very low HR. Resting is around 34-38 and max is about 185 even when I was untrained. I would start using an HRM more often though because 180 seems a tad excessive and maybe your strap was malfunctioning or something. The highest Ive ever seen someone's zone 2 endurance HR was 160. So, I got my HRM yesterday and my resting is like 68-72. So not crazy high. My workout time was taken up by changing a tire today- hopefully I can fit in plan B tonight. |

Nice start, Mike! What can we do to help keep you going this week? |

1941 , Vermont | Subject: RE: Beer Drinker Appreciation Society (BDAS) - Open Originally posted by kevinbe A couple of things. I went out for a 9 pm run tonight. This never works out to well for me. I get lightheaded often. Tonight, a car was slowing down as I was crossing an intersection and was rear ended hard by the vehicle behind it. The car was pushed right on past where I had just been running maybe 2 seconds prior. Close call. Totaled the front end of the Cherokee and the rear end of the Murano. Everyone was OK, and insured. Stay safe out there while your getting your workouts in. I decided to take this week and repeat my runs from last week rather than build. I do not feel like I yet have the runs under me to go from 6.2 to 8.2. Next week I'll make that jump. This week I'll try to improve on my times of my 4 and 6 milers. It's like whittling away at a good book. Only gets better the further your into it. I had a PT appt. today. My first one ever. I've had some back pain since I got fat and out of shape 3 years ago. I had my back go out back then, and I've never felt right since. He was awesome. He is also a distance runner, and confirmed that with the injury I have, that running will only help strengthen the muscles around the vertebrae that are bothering me and to get back into shape. Never been happier leaving a doctors office as I was today. Wow, Kevin, I'm glad to hear you're okay!! That's a close one! Great news from the PT! I'm sure he will have you straightened out in no time - just keep up with the homework. Edited by aviatrix802 2016-02-17 6:24 PM |

1941 , Vermont | Subject: RE: Beer Drinker Appreciation Society (BDAS) - Open Originally posted by thor67 Well it has been a super busy couple of weeks for me. First it was off for a mini holiday in Phoenix! Great weather, great beer, great food...scared to get on the scale. Rented a bike for the weekend as well as trailing running and hiking. Bikes were beaters but they worked fine for what we needed. Phoenix knows how to treat bikers. Must have crossed paths with at least 100+ bikers in an hour of biking! Got back Tuesday. I started an outdoor hockey tournament last year. this is the second year. Came back to +11 Celsius. Ice was shot. Moved to plan B and changed to ball hockey. Had two teams drop out. We spent 3 days removing ice from rink...crazy week but well worth as we had great feedback on tournament. Of course my training suffered this past week!
Sounds like a great vacation, Thor!! Sorry to hear you don't have ice... that's about all we have right now. One day it's 50, like there, but heavy rain - which doesn't go well on frozen ground. I spent a couple of hours yesterday bailing out my side yard in hopes of keeping it out of my basement window well. Success - yay! Now we're back below freezing and tomorrow will be a high of 18F (-8C) here and back up to 45F (7C) on Saturday and rain. It's a hockey rink. So messed up. That's very cool you started the tournament! |

1941 , Vermont | Subject: RE: Beer Drinker Appreciation Society (BDAS) - Open Originally posted by drfoodlove #68--early morning trainer ride. I did spinnervals free weekly workout. I had to sit on the bike for about 3 minutes at the end just to get feeling back in my legs! I *might* have pushed it a tad too hard. #69--2000 yds in the pool at lunchtime. Some exciting news--the masters class is starting up a lunch time session! The normal sessions are at 6am, which I just can't do, try as I might. I'm hoping this sticks around a while, because I'd love to join. It won't work for me for a couple of more week though, since they start at 11:45 and I teach until 12:05, but after mid-March, if I don't go to Egypt (still waiting for permission), I'm so on it! You are awesome, Gretchen! (or should I say Consistency!) Good news about the Master's Program. I'd love to join one but it's T, Th super early and with a traveling hubby I can't leave the kids. It looks like they'll be doing one on T around 11:15 though so I may be able to do this one! Wouldn't it be great to glean some knowledge from a swim coach?! |

1941 , Vermont | Subject: RE: Beer Drinker Appreciation Society (BDAS) - Open Originally posted by adempsey10 Originally posted by aviatrix802 Alan, you've driven part of the Tupper Lake HIM course, how do those rollers compare to IMMT? I did? lol. On the way to Lake Placid I assume? I'm not sure which part was the course but I would say none of those roads are like IMMT. Most of the IMMT course is a 6 lane highway and generally they try to make the hills as gradual as they can rather than sharp rolly rollers on smaller highways. Yes, it was on your way home from LP last summer - you were talking about some of the hills right before my race. Okay, so long, gradual inclines for most and one nasty bugger? I'll check it out on Map my Run to see if anyone has posted it. I've seen it on Strava already but none of the inclines had ratings and I know that can't be true. Long inclines can be good. Thanks. |

Made it to the pool this morning and swam a half IM test to see where I was at. 34mins for 1900m. Very happy about that. Felt good. Ride on the trainer tonight for an hour, and back to the pool tomorrow. |

Extreme Veteran 1648 | Subject: RE: Beer Drinker Appreciation Society (BDAS) - Open Just did a 20 minute jog with my new HRM. Very interesting! I love the arm mount - so much more comfortable than a chest strap for me!!! Anyone have good references for me to look at on on HR to learn more? How quick should you recover after a run? I need to upload my data- I threw in walk minutes to see how quick my HR came down mid run and after the run. |

37 ROTHESAY, New Brunswick | Subject: RE: Beer Drinker Appreciation Society (BDAS) - Open Good question, OWS times can vary a lot depending on water conditions, current, etc. I did an Oly distance one year, and the swim was almost canceled because of the wind, and rough water. I think I was over 5 mins slower than my pool times. That's an extreme example. In calm water they are pretty close, within a minute or so from what I can remember. It's been awhile. Anyone else chime in on the subject? Nice swim! Do you have a rule of thumb for pool to OWS times? I'm curious how they differ. |

Probably a little quicker in the pool, but that's because I swim zig-zags in OWS. I would imagine it varies a lot for people, and gets better (closer) with OWS practice. |

2126 Baltimore, Maryland | Subject: RE: Beer Drinker Appreciation Society (BDAS) - Open Hey everyone! It's been awhile, but I'd love to rejoin BDAS for the 2016 year! I was just glancing through posts and love seeing a lot of familiar faces, mixed in with some new ones (new to me at least!). Name: Nicole Story: I live in Baltimore, Maryland, originally from Carlisle, PA (outside of Harrisburg). I grew up an athlete, including swimming from age 6 to 6th grade and Track/XC in HS and college. I always said after college I would start competing in triathlons but kept making excuses for why I didn't have time to train. Two years ago I finally broke down and signed up for one down in ATL, and did another one in Baltimore later that year. I LOVED them. I think I smiled the entire time. So far I've only done sprints, and will eventually work my way up to Olympic Distance. Probably not much higher than that b/c during my Track/XC years I was plagued with shin splints and had multiple stress fractures. My legs don't love distance. Last year I was excited to sign up for a few more tris, but broke my pinky in May, and had 7 weddings (plus bachelorette parties and bridal shower galore...oh and 10 pregnant friends and their baby showers), so I decided to save my money and time and take the year off. Then I broke my foot in November (at the final wedding...in England...2 weeks in to a 3 week European adventure) and am finally healed up and ready to get back in the saddle! Hoping to do a few tris this year, including the Baltimore one again in October! I got 2nd 2 years ago so my goal is to train really hard and win this year. Family Status: I just started seeing someone a couple months ago. He's actually doing his first tri in May and it is what motivated me to start focusing on triathlons again. I also have a little furbaby :-) an adorable cat named Raven (pic attached ). Current Training: I started swimming last week! Once it gets warmer I will hit the roads on the bike and running again, but trying to ease into that. 2015 Races: None :-/ I've broken 2 bones in my life and both of them were in 2015...not my year Races Planned: The only one I know I'm doing is the Baltimore Tri in October. Hope to do at least 2 others over the summer. Beer Preference: You guys are going to think I'm not meant for this group when I tell you I gave up beer for lent. Not because I don't love it, but b/c I love it too much. Not being able to work out I have been feeling quite soft lately, so thought 40 days without beer while I start working out again would speed up the getting fit process. Last year you all opened my eyes to good beers though and I have branched out a lot. I don't like really hoppy beers, but will try anything these days. Looking forward to catching up with everyone!
