I am not sure that I need a coach, have been very happy with my gains this year, but want to ensure that if we ever race head to head I will have the upper hand! (Not including transition times of course) Even if I am older than you! But seriously, that is why I asked the question. Legitimately, I am probably not ready for one-on-one coaching but am very interested in making sure that my training time is as beneficial as possible in the shortest time possible. Some outside opinion and constructive criticism can go a long way on that front. I was a high performing athlete my entire life so I am used to the coach analysis and feedback process, etc. I know the MG has some experience with EN and other coaches and was looking for some feedback. Maybe I should clarify that my main goal is to ensure that my off season is used to maximum potential without injury or burnout. I am thinking the EN "Out-season" plan may be worth the $$$$ for this year. No gramatic edits here please, I am working on a different computer in the office for the next week due to vacations! Man, a different keyboard sure makes a difference. Plus, my Mom was an english teacher, so I am still scarred from her correcting my Christmas letters and sending them back to me! It is better that your mom sent them back and not Santa Clause!! Should I? Ok I will... Santa Claus Uhhh...yeah...I was talking about the movie...the Santa Clause - or don't they have that in Canada??? I've heard of it yes. Seen it? No. It hasn't come out on Beta yet for us up here to watch.

Wrapped up the long-#$$ run today: 24 miles in the bank. Awesome. And so my thoughts turn to food. (Not quite ready to inhale a ton yet, but looking forward to the evening!) We have our son solo tonight so we'll likely go out to dinner to the restaurant of his choosing, which will most likely be the local pizza joint that has these awesome garlic rolls too (they put the plate on the table as soon as you sit down -- warm, dripping with butter and tons of garlic, YUM!!). Love this place not only for the good pizza, but the local comraderie. The owner did IMC many years ago (15?) and I love to talk tris and races with him. He's hoping to do another IM within the next year or two and has started training. He has athletes bring in bib numbers after local races for pizza discounts -- love it! But I digress. Here are the questions!! When you are doing super-duper long workouts, do you fantasize about what you'll eat later? And if so, do you end up eating that which you fantasized about? Do you have favorite post-killer-workout foods/meals? Not right after, like later that evening? I sometimes fantasize about food but don't always follow up on it. I think I fantasize more when I know what's on tap. In Hawaii we had a fave breakfast haunt with the most awesome banana-mac-nut french toast and it was fun to think about that during a run. Today I wasn't thinking about food, so much as just getting done. Often my stomach is pretty sensitive for the rest of the day so it's not unusual for me to have pretty mild, light food. Last Friday (22 miles) I needed salt BADLY. A guacomole turkey burger and fries totally hit the spot. Mmmmmm. I kinda hope my son wants something more along the lines of a burger joint tonight cuz some fries or onion rings are calling my name!!! Happy Friday to all! I've had a rough week (sick kid) and am particularly looking forward to the weekend and some good, solid nights of sleep! OMG - I totally think up my post workout meal during the last 30-60 min of a long run. Chocolate chip pancakes, veggie omelets or burgers w/ sweet potato fries. Yum Yum Yum. It helps me get through the tough miles. I usually have to wait for a few hrs. but I do get around to fixing it. Oh boy - I'll be doing that soon. Marathon training kicks off in 9 days! When I was marathon training and doing long runs like you two are/will be doing, I always thought I would eat pizza or a bacon double cheeseburger. Once done, it never came to pass, but I wasn't very good about post workout nutrition during those times either. For IM, Steve was such a Nazi about recovery, I always knew it was 8oz of Chocolate Milk immediately post workout and some protein/carb meal an hour or two later. Took the fun away, but I really feel it helped me recover more quickly. Now that I'm a total slouch, I am finding it hard to dial back eating....feel like I could snarf anything in sight more out of habit than hunger. I either need to start working out more soon or tie my hands behind my back. Otherwise I will be sending my clothes to one of your kids, probably toddlers (there I said it before Trev or John could get it out!). Sad day, boat is coming out of the water. It's sunny, but 43F so you know it's time. Had to do a half dive into the water to grab something that flew out of the boat. A bit chilly. |

I bet you will be hungry for a few days while your body builds itself back up. Interestingly enough, after a week or so, I found my appetite was appropriately down. However, I went through a good couple of weeks of having a lot of lightheadedness (is that word?). That happens to me from time to time -- low bp, dehydrated, hungry, whatever -- but it was happening ALL THE TIME every time I stood up. Drove me nuts. After talking with a friend we decided that my metabolism was probably still pretty high but I wasn't eating as much so was having low blood sugar issues. It did eventually pass, again supporting my theory that it was post-IM body adjustements. Sorry for your boat coming out of the water. Can't believe you dove in and didn't end up doing a nice, long, recovery OWS!!! |

Happy news to report about my hubby.   Took another 5 minutes off last years time and took 6th in his age group out of 64.  Last year it was 2nd out of 24 but the race has been entered into a competative series where people get points for doing the international today and the half tomorrow.  Really upped the competition level.  My girlfriend Chris (for those of you who met her) also did great,  3:02 for her first race of the year coming off an injury!!!  I am super proud of them both!!!!

My daughter Katie ran her 2nd race ever and came in 1st for the 5K. It was a sweet. I did not wear my garmin, I just tried to run by feel. I felt like I could have run a lot faster most of the race too but did not want to fade so I kept my pace steady. Pacing is something I have to really work on in all 3 events. Linda |

A big congratulations....a overall win is HUGE!! I agree the whole running by RPE is a great strategy. I pretty much do it at all races and know where LT is well enough not to totally gas myself early. Can't say the same for the bike though!
