Hi Gang!  Aquagirl and I have been tossing around some challenge ideas for the group.  One we liked was for everybody to be assigned days of the month and figure out a fun challenge for the day.  It could be something like jump rope for 5 minutes or eat 2 servings of fruit or something silly like post of pic of your favorite running shoes.  The challenges for the week could be posted on Sunday and progress followed on our thread.  Any interest?

I would propose that for tomorrow's challenge everyone listen to and post their favorite motivating song.  You know the one- it is what you play before (or in the middle) of a difficult run or before a race.

Have a great day all.  Remember to send some virtual energy and cheering to our teammate and trigirls down under!

Big DH!  Congrats on the 139.99 miles. That's one heck of a lot of running!   Gotta ask.....why not .01 more - just a couple of steps??!?!

Yeah I know, I was like, oh darn.

I like the idea...why not start posting ideas and someone can combine them Sunday. Aquagirl would you and KOM do the organizing and posting of the ideas?

My idea try a new fruit or vegetable by weeks end and report in what you think of it.

Yea for Leah!  that's great on the bike.  Despite the rain we BADLY need, I hope you get plenty of good riding in during February!  Maybe get a good bike light.....

LindaCool

Thank you.  I am absurdly proud of myself whenever I actually get on my bike and ride it.  I keep hoping for the day when riding my bike is not such a big event.

I don't ever, and I mean never, listen to music when I run or listen to music for motivation.  So I can't participate in that part of the challenge.  But I like the overall idea.  Oh yeah, assuming that you would really want to see picture of my running shoes, which also presupposes the idea that I actually have  a picture of my running shoes, I don't know how to upload pictures.  Which is one of the reasons I don't have an avatar, the other being I have no idea what I would put there.

On a personal note, after 3 weeks of in and out of the hospital, and too many tests to count, my mother has been diagnosed with lung cancer.  If you so believe, please keep her and our family in your prayers.  I think we have a rough road ahead of us.

LindaCool

Oh Linda, I am so sorry to hear about your mom.  I will keep her in my prayers and thoughts and hope that everything works out OK.  Thank goodness that medical knowledge and technology have advanced to where they can practically work miracles.

That's what challenges are all about- learning and trying new things...We can all teach and inspire each other.

Kathy suggested trying a new fuit or vegetable.  I might add trying an old one in a new way.  I love butternut squash (actually any vegetable but lima beans pretty much)...Anyway, a friend makes fries with butternut squash so my goal is to try that.  Peel the squash, thinly slice it and season.  Bake 45 minutes turning once.  That's my first new challenge, second one is I'm gong to make a marinated veg salad with steamed cauliflower, green beans.  Halved cherry tomatoes, some sun dried tomatoes , stuffed geen olives and chick peas.  Mixed in light italian dressing and chilled.

I bought an avocado too, that is one I'll eat but reluctantly so this week you all have to get me to eat the avocado. ( and not in guacamole that's  too cliche)

Down loading pictures isn't hard if you have a digital camera. The main issue I had for the longet time was resizing them.  The site only allows a particular size limit or threads "blow up" Use the irfan view they advise and once the pictures are downloaded from the camera I resize about 3x to get it in acceptable range, maybe 4x for an avatar.  Irfan view is a free download and the link is somewhere on the site in the Q&A about downloading pictures.

OK some of my ideas....one of them was totally silly...we paint our toe nails and then post pics of them! I don"t know about the rest of you but tri training has not exactly made me have pretty feet,,,lots of calluses from running...so this would be fun.  Darren???? How about YOU paint your dear wifes toe nails ?

One day could be a water  challenge...say 2 litres or something (I will convert this into English)...I know I have NOT been drinking enough....

Along the same lines how about a fiber challenge? Could be any food you wanted, just find out how much fiber is in it....

I will sleep on it and come up with more....

Lets try and do at least one exercise type activity, 1 food related activity and 1 fun activity per week.  Post as many suggestions as you can think of and then Helen and I will assign them to weeks and post the week's challenges each Sunday for the following week.  Does that sound alright?

More suggestions please!!!

Not with much time to spare... but I finally hit the bike part and blew past the double-iron!  Of course, I was probably using the ride today as therapy, and pushed it way too hard.....BIG climbs, and faster than I've done any of the other splits.   Kicked my tush, and I'm sore.  Learning when to stop/turn back may be appropriate at about now!  Cool

Bike:17h 20m 15s  - 259.69 Mi
Run:12h 54m 39s  - 81.12 Mi
Swim:6h 00m  - 20950 Yd
Bike Trainer:1h 00m
Skiing:11h 30m
Stair Running:20m

We could focus on stretching for one challenge; time trials for a mile run, or 1k swim.  I like the peachy challenge.  We could keep track of our nutrition for 24 hours ( a big stretch for me, is wine a fruit?!?)  We could track the time we're on BT; enter a new race this month; set and achieve a personal goal; list the contents of our bike-pouches (I now have a tube!); pick a role model; pick a day to walk everywhere; pick a day to ride everywhere; do a one hour swim and count laps; ditto for run or bike with miles...

Awesome idea, Kathy and Helen!  I've already got a TON of ideas, so sorry to bombard you all with more than 3 - pick the ones you guys think'll work:

  • Try a new exercise you've never done before before the end of the week. Either a new class or video, a new strength move or a new workout session design.
  • Take some training inspiration from a group member - find and do a workout or portion of a workout that you can do or adapt from another person's blogs, then report back why you picked it and how it went.
  • Share 10 reasons why you train
  • Share 3 or 4 reasons that might contribute to you skipping training or cutting a session short.  After looking at the list, let us know how you might you better be able to get past some of that or adapt to the circumstances?
  • Share a great race or training story - what was good about it and how might you incorporate a similar good feeling in your training this week?
  • Write in everyone's blogs at least twice over the course of the week
  • Find an interesting online article on _________ (pick a different topic relevant to recent forum posts or that is suggested at the time)
  • Share one of your favorite healthy and quick pre-workout or recovery snacks or recipes
  • Post a picture of a view from a place that you train (what does your drainer or treadmill face? what do you pass on your regular ride or run route?)

I did the Surf City Half Marathon this morning and I am both really, really pleased and quite disappointed.  How's that for a dichotomy?  Anyway, I did this race last year and my time was 3:05 or 3:06.  My real goal today was to get in under 3 hours.  By 8 miles I was on target to come in about 2:45 and I was stoked.  The problem was that my right hip had been bothering me and by about 8-1/2 miles, I couldn't run any more.  And here is the amazing part - I still came in at 3:55, even with walking the last 4-1/2 miles.  Just think what I might have done if I had actually trained for this race.

Anyway, in February I will be doing serious training in all four disciplines - strength, swim, bike and run.

Have a good rest of the weekend.

Oops.  I did it in 2:55, not 3:55.
