Master 1472 | Subject: RE: Ironman Coeur d'Alene : Official Thread On water temp.... today's water temp is totally normal. Spring run off is pretty much at it's peak right now I would think and once the snow melt water coming into the lake slow down it will start to warm up pretty fast. Look over past years race threads. It is standard to have panic talk about water temps. As someone else said, in 2008 the water was like 56 or 57 on THURSDAY and hit 60 on race day. I just did Alcatraz this past weekend in a sleeveless suit. Water was 54. We will be just fine in CDA. |

Albuquerque, NM | Subject: RE: Ironman Coeur d'Alene : Official Thread Water temp in 2008 went up by 6 degrees to 58*ish in the week prior to the race. Last weekend at St George the temp was around 57* and I didn't wear booties and my feet were fine. The neoprene cap and ear plugs were the key components though. Good luck everyone, I want to go back and do IMCdA again, because the town support was awesome and the family had a blast. |

Regular 105 | Subject: RE: Ironman Coeur d'Alene : Official Thread Does anyone have experience with leg cramping in cold water (calves, feet)? I experienced this a bit during IM California 70.3 (59F) and was wondering if there were any recommendations on how to prevent. My short warm up run prior didn't seem to do it. Maybe just need to do some more massaging/stretching? Or take an Endurolyte before hand? |

Maybe just need to do some more massaging/stretching? Or take an Endurolyte before hand? I was told to swim more in my wetsuit. It seems some cramping issues can be caused by the muscles being constricted by the suit. I did notice that this year at CAL 70.3 i didn't cramp as much as i did last year. |

Regular 105 | Subject: RE: Ironman Coeur d'Alene : Official Thread Thanks for the recommendation. I just got done with an initial session with a swim coach and asked her about it. In addition to bananas/potassium, she also suggested doing more and more stretching as you get closer to your event. She also suggested I do more training in OW/group swim environments, which would help with getting more time in the wetsuit. It's probably silly not to do more OW swimming given than I'm fortunate enough to be near the beach. |

New user 21 New Haven | Subject: RE: Ironman Coeur d'Alene : Official Thread An update on my training which makes me rather happy! When I started training for CdA last June, my time in the pool for a mile was around 48 mins (yea, very slow). Now I'm down to around 34 mins / mile (minimal kick of the wall) and still improving weekly! My goal for CdA was 35 mins / mile, but I think now I'll try to get down to 30. As far as being on the bike goes, my longest ride yet is 3.5 hours so I have a ways to go the next 4-5 weeks. Planning a 60 miler tomorrow, 80 next week, and hitting the 100 mark in two weeks. I've ran a couple marathons, multiple halfs over the last year and am consistently 6:45-7:15 pace so I'm not too worried on that end. If I survive the swim, and get off the bike able to walk...I think I'll be fine (first IM). Thanks for the updates, info, constant learning and support everyone! Hope you're all enjoying the toughest month of training Edited by MikeAndHuskies 2010-05-08 12:01 PM |

Expert 1006 Kansas City, MO | Subject: RE: Ironman Coeur d'Alene : Official Thread Well the wife and I had a close call this weekend.... I will share since it's not too bad... Doing our long ride on Saturday, about 50 miles into it a car swerves at us to miss a pot hole, causing my wife to swerve into me. She grabbed my shirt to try and hold me up but ended up going down on the pavement and receiving some road rash on her arms and legs (but she was good and saved the bike, only a couple little scrapes on the bike), I flew into a 5 foot ditch but luckily the grass was pretty high and the bike was ok, just a few grass stains for me... Feeling pretty lucky things could have been drastically worse!!! It was flat so we were probably going around 20 mph. The car hit their brakelights and drove on.... However, two other cars did stop to help us out so that was nice.... Anyway, just a friendly reminder to be careful and defensive out there. We will both be fine and don't plan to miss any workouts b/c of it..... Happy training....

Expert 1207 Liberty Lake, WA | Subject: RE: Ironman Coeur d'Alene : Official Thread Dave Scott is one of the people I blame my IM addiction on. Good video, I firmly believe that poor race day nutrition is the biggest cause of DNF's. More than undertraining, and more than going too hard on the bike. For what it's worth I posted my race day plan (and bike nutrition plan) in my log yesterday if anyone is interested. |

Expert 1006 Kansas City, MO | Subject: RE: Ironman Coeur d'Alene : Official Thread Hey T in Liberty Lake, if you don't mind me asking what is your weight?? and or race day plan weight?? I am 190 lbs, probably be close to 180 by race day, but I looked at your race plan, specifically nutrition and was curious if you were more my size or those speedy 150 lbers.... Thanks, Travis |

Expert 1207 Liberty Lake, WA | Subject: RE: Ironman Coeur d'Alene : Official Thread As of this morning I'm 204. On race day I would like to be a speedy 150 with 6-pack abs, but chances are I'll still be 200+ and packing around my keg. |

New user 10 Salt Lake City | Subject: RE: Ironman Coeur d'Alene : Official Thread For those of you worried about not getting enough hill training, or just looking for something different to do, I thought I would mention that I tried a Spinervals DVD this morning. I did the "Totally Hillacious" workout. 60 minutes of climbing, accelerating on the downhills, and more climbing. Maybe a little too basic for the really good cyclists out there, but it was great for me as this is my first Ironman and I have spent an awful lot of training time on my trainer in my small ring just spinning. My goal is to knock this out three times in a row (maybe with 20 minute easy pedaling in between) before the race. |

Extreme Veteran 483 San Diego | Subject: RE: Ironman Coeur d'Alene : Official Thread Took it real easy this weekend. Still struggling to fight off the effects of the marathon - and have some pretty big weeks coming up - so I thought it might be good to get some rest and get caught up with life for a while. Still managed to get in 2-mile OWS Friday and again last night. There was a lot of chop out there. Some pretty big swells even out past the break! I'm participating in a full-IM simulation this Saturday. I'll do the full swim and most likely all of the bike, but I'm questioning how much of the run makes sense. I'm looking forward to training some nutrition strategies with a long race-pace effort, but I really don't want to be laid out for a while with recovery. How much is everyone else planning on running this weekend, now that we're 6 weeks out? |

If I were you I would skip the run this weekend. I think that you need to get over the marathon more than you need to run off of the bike. |

Member 59 Houston | Subject: RE: Ironman Coeur d'Alene : Official Thread Riding my first 100 miler this weekend. Then recovery then build for 3 weeks into the taper. Getting worried about nutrition on the bike. Will only have two bottles on my bike with at least one filled with perpetuem. Will have another in my special needs bag but I don't want to depend on it. Also fueling with hammer bars on the bike.. Trying to keep things simple. At the aid stations on the bike, what type of bottles do they hand out? Actual bike water bottles that can fit in your cage or not? |

Extreme Veteran 483 San Diego | Subject: RE: Ironman Coeur d'Alene : Official Thread Thanks, T. I'll see how the track workout goes today. Not sure what Coach Vance has in store for us, but I guess I'll find out in a few hours. If I don't do much, if any, of the run off the bike during the IM sim, I'll plan on a longish run (something like 12-15) on Sunday. Rest is probably the best "training" I can do for that discipline right now. btw...The Encinitas Triathlon is this weekend and rumor has it that Macca is going to be in town to race. Planning to go volunteer on Sunday morning if I'm not too beat from the sim. Kinda bummed that I'm not racing this year, but I guess you have to pick your battles and I'm a bit fought out. The only official event I'm doing from now until CDA is a century tour ride next weekend. |

Veteran 237 WA | Subject: RE: Ironman Coeur d'Alene : Official Thread As I recall, they were regular screw top water bottles like you get in the store. Do you have a sipper on your areobars? Could fill it with those. I haul 3 bottles plus the sipper and refill at special needs. 2 bottles GU20 and 1 bottle water and water in sipper to start. |

Regular 56 | Subject: RE: Ironman Coeur d'Alene : Official Thread Some pretty good tips out there... Travis, I am glad all turned out o.k. with the car episode. Not fun... Good nutrition video by the way. I still need to lock down my plan. Mike, I may be the only genius that signed up for a marathon 6 weeks before Ironman. What was I thinking? Not to mention the 130+ mile mtn ride (4 Passes--Boise to Stanley) the following weekend with the Boise Aeros Club. ChinaExpress, I am going to give some compression sleeves for the shins/calves a try this weekend in the marathon. I will keep you posted. If I like them, I will likely use them for the run (T2) at IMCDA. I know there was a couple of injuries out there (i.e. Baowolf, etc.). I hope you are healing up. |
