Junk Food is the Enemy.

Anyone else struggling with losing weight?    For me, it's a matter of stopping eating garbage.  Very simple, but so freaking hard to do...

I am not having any issues losing weight, I actually feel I might be losing too much weight.  After one of my big workouts I dropped down to 159 lbs! My wetsuit is rated to 160.  I am still eating sweets, but in moderation.  I don't eat junk food.  I do eat LOTS of pizza, is that considered junk food?  Laughing

Since we're on the junk food topic...I stole this from Ron's (one of the guys who runs this site) blog:

I don't understand all the fuss about Ronald McDonald.  It's the parents that buy it...not the kids.  It's the parents that drive the kids to McDonalds...not the kids.  So when parents try to pin the obesity epidemic on fast food chains...who is really to blame?

My kids have McDonalds or really any fast food about twice a month lately.  I pack their lunch myself, lots of fruits and veggies everyday.  Chicken sandwich from a roasted breast (not processed, overpriced deli meat) They don't eat that nasty (microwaved in plastic wrap=plastic chemical leaching) school food.  They don't eat that candied cereal that many kids do.  They don't have PopTarts for breakfast (as delicious as they are, PopTarts are not a healthy start to a kids day).

My wife and I discuss if the fact that people go to Fast food for their kids due to the fact that it is inexpensive...IT'S NOT!  2 Happy meals and an adult meal is very expensive compared to making something at home from scratch (crock-pot roast with potatoes, onions and carrots) on a 'per meal' basis.  Eating out anywhere does not save money anymore.  Fast food is only fast...not cheap.

My kids get snacks like chips, cookies everyday with lunch and after dinner...assuming they eat fruits and veggies between meals.  I am not draconian.  They are not devoid of any yummies.  They get on avg about an hour to play on the playground after school.  When it's warm we walk home (extra 20 minutes).  TV doesn't go on except for weekends so they are outside after homework is done...plus karate.  If they instead choose to read or play inside, all the better as it is developing their imagination instead of droning away in front of the TV.  I make sure they burn what they are consuming...and having fun.  Keeping TV or videos on the weekends gives them something to look forward to from a good week at school.

Parents shouldn't blame fast food.  Parents should blame the lack of diligence on their part for their kids obesity...as ultimately it's the parents that put the food in front of their kids - or take them to it.

Many people will cite, "But I have no time to pack lunch or make dinner...we work all these hours."  Well...from what I have seen numerous times, many people have to work those hours to afford all the thing that they don't really need, big house, cars, eating out, etc...this takes away from being really diligent in your kids life.  I know I can save 1/4 to 1/3 at least from people's budgets.  That can go to less hours or a different job for more family time.  One really has to evaluate if you are living for you or for your kids/family sake.

I think this is pretty much spot on for the most part and the focus on children's nutrition is very important  BUT I think the real culprit in regards to childhood obesity (or all obesity for that matter) is the lack of physical activity.

Our diet certainly wasn't any better growing up in the late 70's early eighties and I don't believe that this was nearly the issue that it is now. Nobody came home from school and played video games(probably cause they sucked back then Smile), we would ride our bike to practice whatever sport was in season or we'd have a pickup game of baseball/hockey/Bball or whatever. Kids still play sports; mine play soccer, basketball, tennis, track and swimming throughout the course of the year but I don't really see the neighborhood pickup games like I used to. Seems that given the choice to be active or jump on the computer/Xbox/DS/whatever, too often the choice is to tune out with technology.

When my kids were in 1st grade, the school implemented a rule that forbid any food at class parties such as birthdays, holiday, etc. citing the obesity problem. Figuring 20 kids and maybe 5 holiday celebrations over the course of a 10 month school year, you're talking about 2.5 cupcakes per month. Yet, in talking to my daughters yesterday, they told me that during recess, kickball was no longer allowed, they can't run, no touch football, dodgeball has been gone forever and no boxball. The one game they are allowed to play is modified volley ball where they catch the ball then throw it back over but they are considering banning this as well....but it's the 2.5 cupcakes per month that are making them fat.

Don't get me wrong, nutrition is very important and creating good eating habits is REALLY important but as a society, we're so afraid to let our children be kids for fear of injury or lawsuit that we eliminate the very behavior that historically helped kept the obesity risk in check.

Sorry bout the rant but I feel better now  Smile

Great discussion here!  Thanks for posting the McDonald's stuff.  I agree with both of you guys.  The parents certainly have some influence if their kids will be obese.  That is actually one of the reasons I Tri,  kids are more influenced by our actions than what we tell them.  That is interesting about the 2.5 cupcakes a month, that adds up!

Have a great long weekend everyone!

Hi everyone:

Have a great long weekend.  Speaking of Mcdonalds, my wife and I were having a bit disagreement about a city here in LA that wants to ban toys in happy meal to as a discentive for kids.  I didn't agree with it, personally I feel like as a parent, I'm responsible for what I put into my kids body; government involvement is good in somethings but not in everything.  anyway, enjoy reading about the junk food threads.

Hopefully this weekend I'll be able to move more, plan to ride tomorrow and monday morning and run Sunday morning.

tough week, tried to get up at 5:30am all five days but failed...

Interesting posts on the "junk-food McDonalds" topic!

I take my child to McD's about once a month.  When I was a kid it was a big deal going there - it had to be a birthday or something special.  Now-a-days it seems so common for families to go for fast food that I'd venture to say it's not UNcommon for kids to eat there at least once a week.  My child is healthy and lean but she's the smallest of most of the kids in her class.  A number of them are too big for their age/build etc and it's related to their eating.  She whines that I don't give her candy ring pops etc in her lunch.  She gets sweets - but they are home made baked goods or fresh fruit.  I'll give her salty snacks - popcorn or pretzels but it's a small portion - not a big bag.

I'm of mixed emotions re: happy meal toys because I've noticed that when my child begs me to go - I discover after that she's not really up for eating the food but rather just wanted the toy.  So in a sense - the marketing of those toys is driving the kids to McD's - for the toy vs. the food.  But then...I'm the one that drives her there and pays.  I could probably just buy the toy without the meal.

I agree with Ted about lifestyle.  I think it's in part the times.  When I was a kid we were let loose on the neighbourhood until the lights went on.  There was no parental supervision but now I wouldn't dream of letting my child go to the park on her own.  So if the parents aren't up for the outing - the kids aren't likely to go!  And same with the school - my child recently had track and field day - I remember as a kid doing high jump, long jump, running long jump and a whole bunch of running distance races (that I dreaded). I remember those circuits they used to make us do that was like a boot camp.  Track and field day for her consisted of a 1-100m run, some standing long jumps and play time on the play structure ??

But there's something else about it too because aside from swimming and cycling I tended to be an inactive child (read a lot in the hammock!) and I was healthy.  I think it has to do with processed foods and additives etc that goes in to them.  Who cooks from scratch now?  So many people eat from a freezer box or buy pre-marinaded processed meats.  Clean eating is a fad now vs. a lifestyle.

Anywhere there's my Friday night rant!  I understand it's a long weekend for most of you so I have you all have a FANTASTIC time and get lots of good fun training in!!  I'm hoping for another long ride tho this time I will stick to the roads!

So NOW I'm starting to get nervous about reaching my goal.  I had a brutal weekend of training - too many obligations and then when I finally got out - I got a flat and wasn't prepared.  Unfortunately I don't have a chance for a long ride this week which means next Saturday will be my last long ride before the 100mile ride eek!  In hindsight I don't think I built my volume up fast enough and now I feel rushed to double my volume in three weeks.  Oh well.  I figure I can just throw my body in to it but it won't be pretty - definitely not the strong ride I'd hoped for!

How was everyone else's weekend?  Wait! It's STILL the weekend for you yanks!  Lucky lucky!

WOW! Big weekend for some!  This weekend is the last one I have for a training ride before my planned ride so ya... I'll be on the bike.  It's beautiful and sunny here - finally a heat wave - but it's supposed to rain Saturday

How did everyone fare with their May goals?  Mine was to stick to the plan and get my weight down.  While I missed quite a few workouts I'm pleased that I had a consistent month and... I broke through the 140 barrier - well 139.9 but it's still on the other side so I'll TAKE IT!!!  Down 3 pounds this month.  Small amount but man it's tough to get rid of!

Well, since the taskmaster Tongue out is going to ask us anyway...here are my May goals vs. actual:

May goals, according to plan...

S:  38350.00 Yd - 13h 45m  (don't think this will happen because of road rash...going to shoot for 25K)
B:  0.00 Mi - 26h 35m (that's about 450 miles...total is really going to depend on how often I can do 2-3 hour rides, let's call the goal 400 miles)
R:  0.00 Mi - 11h 55m (84 miles...I think I can do this)
Str:  6h 45m (under 2 hours a week...yeah, probably...maybe closer to 5 overall)

Actual May:

May's totals:
Bike:17h 20m 40s  - 270.56 Mi
Run:11h 43m 19s  - 74.47 Mi
Swim:6h 13m 36s  - 15350 Yd
Strength:3h 05m
Walking:50m

Wow.  Even though I put it the biggest training month ever for me, with almost 40 hours total, I still fell well short of my overall goal.  My crash on the bike affected the swimming as I was out of the pool until about May 10th, so I have a bit of an answer there, but I really thought I'd get closer on the bike volume.  Total run volume was fine.

June should be similar to May...I have my longest runs and rides planned in the first two weeks and a big ramp up on swimming.  I have my first tri of the year on June 26th but I don't plan on tapering other than maybe an extra day off, then my first taper for my first Olympic July 9th.

Oh, and the weather here went from low-to-mid-60s every day to mid-90s; it's been a bear trying to acclimate even running early in the mornings or inside.

With all the workouts and endurance training you have done in the last few months you will do great!  Missing one or two workouts won't have much of an impact on your ride.  Just keep in mind those long rides you have done...those will get you through this.

You gotta bust out your tri race uniform and hammer the mile so hard you throw up at the finish.

Seriously, though, that sounds like fun.  We've done a bunch of those with my daughter over the years.

The Taskmaster failed miserably at his May goal.  That goal was to lose 5 to 6 pounds and get down to Race Weight.  Halfway through the month I tripped and slammed my teeth on the pity pot and just laid there licking my wounds.  Well my JUNE GOAL is to take another crack at my May Goal.  We've all been in this Mentor Group for six months now.  The Gloves are OFF.  It's bloody bare knuckle time.  No more 'Bambi Rated G' motivation.  It's Rated R time.  Rambo just took out an AK47 and mowed down Bambi.  There's a new motto around here and it's ....  H T F U.   This is the heart of the racing season.  So tie your boot straps tight.  Fasten your seatbelts.  And get ready to ride this crazy train to hell and back.  So let's all take a nice heaping does of H T F U and conquer some freaking goals!!!

We're doing this health challenge at work that is 5 parts; physical, nutritional, psycholigial/emotional, intellectual, and social/community wellness.   Some of them are pretty common sense but some of them are a bit of a challenge - or will be for me.  If you are interested I can post them each week and we can all review and see where we can make some improvements.

Under nutrition - some suggestions are to eat fish (or an omega-3 fatty acid supplement) 2x per week, eat 6 servings fruit/veggies per day, and drink more water.  These would all be challenges for me... I'm trying but failing on them.  One of the tips was to visit a registered deitician to discuss how you could improve your diet.  Interesting thought.  I used to make a new vegetarian dish once a week using an ingredient I've never used before - I think I need to pick up that habit again.  Makes things more interesting and is good exposure to new things.  I've always been curious about kale!

I'm not sure what my June goals are... drink more water, eat more healthy, see if I can get down to 136 by June 30th, train consistently, ride 100 miles on June 12th.  I'd like to build my running base so that 10 miles is an easy weekend run.   I'd like to read 'Born to Run' (my intellectual wellness goal).

Good luck to all of you competing this weekend!!  Looking forward to hearing all about your experiences.

Dream Chaser - 2011-06-02 6:05 PM The Taskmaster failed miserably at his May goal.

WahooOOOOOOOOOO!!

Time to clock in buddy!  Good luck on Sunday!  You're long rides are fast...well ....all your disciplines are FAST!!!  Rock it on Sunday!!....enjoy it and best of luck!!

This weekend for me should be my biggest weekend of training, then tapering a bit.  I will HTFU in the middle of my long rides!!
