I think hot and miserable as hell is a good expectation.  If for some reason it's not like that take advantage of the situation.  One thing I mentioned on another thread is that the course is a giant mystery right now.  I'm thinkiing they might make it like the amazing race where we go from point to point and have to use clues to figure out the map.  Clearly they are taking the athletes best interest ($$$$$$) into consideration at this point.Tongue out

Well I did Galveston this weekend and had a pretty good race, but it was hotter than heck and definitely the hardest race to date. I did PR from last year, but the heat was brutal and made me a bit freaked out for IMTX. I've never been so exhausted and relieved for a race to be over.

My goal was to run the whole time, which I accomplished, but don't think I'll be able to for IMTX and that is ok since my goal is to just finish without going to the med tent.

Three more weeks left then taper!! Woohoo!!!

I too was in Galveston this weekend, and yes, it was definitely a good train-up for texas with the heat and humidity! even though this will be my second full, i was wondering how i am going to survive an additional 13 miles on the run! I had some goals, but i think i will just be happy with finishing without suffering too badly on the run!

What scares me that is already in the low 80s here, no telling what its going to be in May

My prediction is hot and humid, with long periods of intense sun!

My long run on Sunday and medium run today has me on the worried side.

Just remember that your pacing will be much slower for the 140.6 distance than the 70.3 distance.  If you expect to race at the same pace you did this weekend you will be in trouble.

i think what really affected me at galveston was NO SHADE.  at least the IMTX course offers a bit of shade.  but that run by the airport was just so desolate, all concrete...and again...NO SHADE!  hah.  i'm prepared for it to be hot as hell at IM but at least there are some trees, yknow?

Getting nervous. If its too hot well... I'll just hire some person to run along side holding and umbrella for me. . I was getting some good hot weather training in until I moved to seattle. If it rains I am so covered in that department.

Has the bike course been settled on?

I am sure the course is settled, just not released. I would bet it is not a drastic change with only 7 weeks to go. I mentally training for the worst and letting the chips fall

A couple of us will be riding the course on Saturday. We are going to start at 7 AM at the Walmart at the end of Woodlands Parkway.

I heard it might get switched to 2 loops versus 1. Anyone have any thoughts on that? Is it even a possibility?

I have not looked at the course maps for any part of the race yet.  It will all be the same to me....a surprise! :-)

Hi All,

jelous on those who ride the course - well, would be a too long trip for me to fly over for watching the course (even if its not sure that it will be the final one)

for those who ride the course - Have fun ! - maybe you could let us know, how the road conditions are - is the surface in good condition ? need to decide which tubulars i will put on for the race (vittoria evo for good condition [fast, but not the best safety against tirebreadown] or something more safe)

only 7 weeks to go, only 6 weeks until i fly over

rgds,
Erwin

p.s. how is the weather there - currently its not so hot, yet, or ?

My personal opinion is that riding a course pre-race is arguably the most overrated thing imaginable.  Not sure why everyone gets so nuts about it.  Looking at the course profile and other people's Garmin files on Garmin Connect will give you a pretty good idea of what to expect about any course.

The roads are in pretty good shape on the IMTX course.  Certainly not as nice as the European roads you're used to riding on but decent enough condition to race with your nice tires.

Weather has been in the low-80's but it has been a warm winter and spring so far.

Crazy holiday weekend. How are you fitting in your workouts in? I did my sat long ride this morning on the trainer. 100 miles even, really really fun. I might get Sunday's long run done tomorrow so I can help my 4 little ones track down that rascally rabbit. Have great weekend, stay safe and healthy.

I MUST GO LONG THIS WEEKEND!!!

After last weekends battle of sickness, I am in desperate need of some solid consistent training. Hoping for 100 miles tomorrow and maybe a 16-18 miler on Sunday

I moved stuff around as well. Yesterday I rode 5 hrs on my trainer doing 2 different endurance rides from trainer road, and a 1 hour brick. This morning I was going to do another hour on the trainer, but I am tired and iplan on running before the family gathering today. If my legs feel good tomorrow I will try to get 2-3 hrs on the trainer, but who knows.

why are you doing so much biking on trainer instead of biking outside ?

in the winter/cold i use the inside biking as alternative training, but as soon, as the weather is ok i wanna go outside.

I made a deal with my wife after last years race that I would not let my training take up so much family time. Instead I get up around 4 to get the bulk of my rides in and I have the rest of the day helping with our boys. I would like to believe this year my rides are more productive on the trainer because I pedal the entire time and follow a set plan unlike last year where I just rode how I felt. I will ride at least 2 more long rides outside to get a better idea of my paceing strategy this year. I seem to be 1 to 1.5 mph faster on the road ( I try not to get hung up on mph, but...)

I wish I had gone more on the trainer - I rode the course today and it gave me a good kicking! I console myself that on race day I will have more long rides in me, rented Zipp 808's on the bike, a more disciplined hydration/nutrition strategy, a few less lbs on me and a taper behind me.

I rewatched Passion of the Christ yesterday - puts perspective on our athletic pursuits. Happy Easter everyone.

X2, with 4 kids (7, 6, 5, 1) Life is tough wen it comes to 5 hr rides. Although my wife doesn't mind one bit, I hate not being there for weekend fun. I can get on the trainer hours before or after everyone gets up and have a tougher ride than I'd get in flat and cool Va. Beach.

Second weekend in a row of 100 miles on the bike.

Next weekend I'm heading to Houston to the 112 miles on the course.

Weekend after that, a big day of training with another 100 mile ride. Yeah.

Keep up the training everyone!

x2

I seem to be going the other way. I love the trainer, have yet to hit a pothole, sit at a redlight, get cold feet or rained or even snowed on while on the trainer. I can keep a nice pace on the trainer and also not deal with my arch nemisis- wind. Yell

Had a 104 mile struggle fest today outside. Knew from mile 1 that it was not going to be a good ride and the next 5:30+ hrs proved that and more.

A few more of these and hopefully some warmer weather up here to get ready for cool temps in Woodlands Laughing
