ballyard7 - 2012-05-10 5:21 PM What's everyone got planned for the weekend? I've got another big volume weekend. 120 bike / 5 run on saturday and a very hilly trail 15 miler Sunday. Looks to be great weather though so I'm looking forward to it. Only a few big weekends left. Stay safe out there everyone.

I am on a recovery week, 55 mile bike/20 min run on Sat, 11 mile run/3600 yds swimming.  I also have Monday off, normally a rest day but, if the lake is 50, or better, I am going to get in an easy OWS while my wife enjoys the 80+ outside temps when most people are at work!

Sounds like you are really getting after it.....we have a 120 miler in a couple weeks.

This weekend we are changing it up and going for a 90 mile MT Bike ride.  White rim trail in Canyonlands National Park. Should be fun/tough day.

Enjoy the ride!!

Wow a 90 mile mtn bike ride?!? The trails I ride would take about 12 hours to get that in. My shoulders would be torn up from the rocky terrain. Have a good one!

Went 103 miles on the bike today then 1 hour / 8 mile run.  Hurting afterward, the first thing I thought was "HOW much further do I have to go in 6 weeks?"  This Ironman thing is a beast I'm still not sure I have my head around.

Nice work out there.  Sorry I missed your earlier post, would have been good to ride with you.  Lots of riders out there today.

I'm riding 100 tomorrow followed by a 1 hour run.  Sunday is 3600m ows, 2 hour ride, and 1 hour run.  Then a lot of laying on the couch and eating.

Uh, make this a zero weekend - I came down with something on Friday afternoon and have slept 28 of the last 36 hours.  Hoping the extra rest will be beneficial and not detrimental this close to the race.

Congrats on the 70.3 and peeing on the bike. Make sure to clean your shoes well. Got 101 in yesterday with 50 of it on the course. If we have a day like yesterday we're going to see some smoking fast bike splits. Couldn't have asked more better weather and not much wind.

New to the CDA thread. Previously raced CDA in 2008 as my first IM. Was reading through the posts concerning the new bike course. Seems like the climbs are more gradual and longer compared to the old course. Can I assume from those of you riding the course that the max grade is about 6%?Given the same effort, do you find the new course faster and if so, by how much?Really appreciate all the local feedback. I live in south Florida and obviously cannot replicate the elevation changes other than riding the computrainer. Looking forward to race day!

Our triathlon club put on a Mock tri for 120 people yeterday that was a great time. It was fun seeing a lot of people do there very first triathlon. After wards I got in a warm but fairly fast 16 mile run followed by a refreshing open water swim. Today I got in a 60 mile bike that had 6000 feet of climbing in it. I got to try out my new (to me) Zipp 404-808 setup. I really liked them with the exception of when we started hitting some bad wind on the descents. The first time the wind hit me hard it about knocked me off my bike at about 35 MPH and I almost crapped my pants. I babied the rest of the descent after that. The winds were pretty strong and it has me rethinking my wheel setup for CdA. I was going to pick up a cover for my 808 and run that but now I am not sure? What is everyone else going to run as far as a wheel setup goes? I know the bike course can have quite a bit of wind but is it going to be mostly a head and tail wind or will we be getting quite a bit of cross winds also?

I'm in no way an authority on setup, but I'm riding 404s in front and back.  The wind is really bad here in the spring, so I figure that having gotten used to that, it can't be THAT much worse on the decents in CdA. (I hope!)

Wow that is an awesome day of training. I wish I could do that. I have only done one century in my life and that was 2011 IMSG. That is really amazing!

I had an ok day on Sat. I did a route called the Redrock Loop. It has some hills that range from 6%-11%. The loop is about 17 miles long, and of course there are some nice descents. I ended up with a 1:45 total trip from my home and back. Then did a 10 mile run. Run time was 1 hour 45 mins. My feet are really sore.

Hope I can catch up with you all.

For what it's worth, I'll be riding 404's front and back just because of the winds.  There are a couple of descents on the course where the wind can swirl some and it can be pretty dicey.  The other factor is there will be vehicle traffic fairly close to you on some of the route, including semi's going highway speed and the wind off them can be nasty too.  I've had some days out on the course where the descents have definitely been white knucklers, others have been no problem.  Just in case though I'm sticking with the 404's.

On another note, the lake temp is up over 52 degrees today and going to get quite a bit warmer the rest of the week!  Might be swimming in the lake by this weekend.

Good to hear!  Might it be in the 60s by race day?  Dare to dream...

Just another perspective - I did CdA last year, and IM Western Australia last December, using a 808+disc on both.  IMWA had much stronger wind, and you'd get it from different aspects all the time due to the H-shaped bike course.  I don't regret using the disc on either one, though.

But it's a different decision for each person based on your comfort level.  The highway traffic is also something I didn't have to deal with on the old bike course.  But based on wind alone, I'd go with a disc at CdA every time.

Absolutely what each rider is comfortable with.  On the old course there wasn't a problem with higher profile wheels (I rode 808's on it) but the new course this year has significantly longer and faster descents with, imho, trickier, more swirling winds at times.  Factor in the winds off the big rigs and it can get rather entertaining!  That being said, I've seen several riders out on the new course with discs and no crashes yet so ride what you're comfy with.

Yeah the biggest concern for me would be gusts.  But in strong steady wind the disc is really nice.  I don't have my power file handy but in Australia, we had extended sections with a stiff wind.  You can see where I had a tailwind, doing like 28mph on a flat at 160 watts, and then flip that around in the headwind.

Are they closing parts of the CdA course to traffic?

I hate to let the cat out of the bag here but a disc is not affected by winds very much. It's more of a deep front wheel problem. In fact running a deeper rear than front will help stabilize you. Ie an 808 rear 404 front. I'll be on a disc and an 808 FC front. I've ridden a 90 mm front in some pretty Pugh conditions and been okay. You just shouldnt throw on a 1080 on race day and expect to feel all that confident.

x2 to what Scott said.

I'm not racing CdA this year, btw... I'm doing Canada instead.  But your thread keeps me motivated

The Canada thread is a bunch of *crickets*.
