Catwoman - 2012-08-13 10:08 AM Posted in the TT forum. Tom has really crossed the line this time in my opinion. IF a poor swimmer, overweight athlete were to pass away during a swim would it also be appropriate to post their statistics? I don't think so.

And, as I posted in response to yours, it's a total non sequitur anyway

I definately want to get into cyclocross, but can't justify buying another bike just right now.  I've been browsing craigslist for a used bike to try it out, but haven't had any luck.

god almighty, forget trying not to post in TT, it's getting to where i can't even read it anymore.  Swim buddy system lauded as "thinking it through"

Every time this topic comes up, Tom wants draconian regulations.  Nothing new.

TSimone - 2012-08-13 12:03 PM Curious what you all think of this article posted elsewhere.  I think there are some valid points but honestly don't have even close to enough info to understand what could be done differently, if anything, in the swim leg.  I do think that until actual causes are truly understood, any radical changes would be based on speculation only.

My opinion:

- there's a small but real chance someone will have a problem on a swim
- TIME is everything when someone has a cardiac or breathing problem
- water rescues take too much time in long distance swimming events

I think the #1 thing I'd suggest is more wetbikes on site for the lifeguards.  They're faster and more stable than jetskis.  Surfboards and kayaks are too slow to make a long distance rescue in 4 minutes or less.  You *might* get chest compressions or rescue breathing on a surfboard; probably not at all on a kayak.  They're good for monitoring swimmers or getting them out of the swim pack TO a wetbike.  Not good alone for rescues.

THIS^^^

We can't fix the problem unless we actually know what the problem actually is, and what measures can actually help the problem in an effective way.

They should've just consolidated all the knee-jerk swim fatality threads into one and treated it like TAN.

Mark and Fred, and any other medical professional, you have to check out one of the responses to Kido's dizzy thread in TT

Oh, come on! You mean you can't quote a Spike TV staged "reality" show as expert medical advise?  We should just cancel med schools and sit people down in front of the TV.  "Dude, it was on 1,000 ways to die, it's so fer reals".

If you need that in sarc font, I'm in the wrong forum.Wink

Clots form every time I sit down!  Who knew!

Even when clots do form (rarely), people need to remember the basic circulatory pathway from science class:

veins -> right atrium -> right ventricle -> lungs -> left atrium -> left ventricle -> oxygenated blood to the body.

Your brain is the last place a venous blood clot from your leg is going to end up.  Not to say the lungs are any safer, but man I hate misinformation like that.

Fred D - 2012-08-13 9:09 PM Btw IMNYC is suspended for registration. My guess is no event next year. I'm surprised, but it sounds like it sucked balls from logistics point of view.

That's my guess too.  Their registration numbers were probably way low with the $1200 and then with the general negative responses that seem to be reported, they will probably need to reset their thinking.
