Master 2912 ...at home in The ATL | Subject: RE: Ironman Lake Placid : Official Thread manfarr1974 - 2013-03-05 2:37 PM I missed a few rides last week for the same reason Deborah. My bike was making bad noises so I took it to the Dr. It kind of freaked me out to miss a few workouts, but really, it is better to lose it for a few days now then in May or June! That is what I keep telling myself anyway. I hope to ride outside sometime soon too! AND! I happened to work near my pool today so I SNUCK out (shh) and got 1500 yds in...it was all I had time for (with work and all), and given the pool is 90mins away from home, I will take what I can get! I am dying for the lake to melt so I can get out into the OW (that is only 2 miles away.) But it will be a while...Check it out, it is opening up (PS - that's my dog Porter)... Good job on sneaking it in when you can! That looks like an awesome OWS location - very cool that it is only 2 miles from the house. Now if it would only get warmer... |

From the looks of it I think there may still be a bunch of folks shoveling snow! Or will be tomorrow! Right now it's sleeting and very windy. Was going to head back to the gym and swim, but I think I'll ride the trainer at home. |

Wonder if I can really get away with doing just one a week 2000 meters until the build phase. I am not a strong swimmer. I went 1:45 when I was doing 3 a week 3500 meter during the peak phase. Hey Peter - it depends on what you mean by 1:45? Do you mean you went one minute and forty-five seconds per 100 meters in your last ironman-distance swim, or do you mean it took you one hour and fourty-five minutes to cover the entire 2.4 miles? |

Regular 176 | Subject: RE: Ironman Lake Placid : Official Thread Been a sort of crummy week. I think I am a touch fatigued, and trying to ease up on some of the workouts/perhaps rest to catch up. Hopefully the snow is a non-event for the Boston burbs. On the plus side, I am 10 lbs down in wgt thus far; I'll take that! How is everyone staying motivated? I gotta say, I am running out of Netflix! |

Let me know if you figure out what causes that. Todd, happened again tonight. But it seems to happen late in the swim when I'm still pointing my toes with effort rather than just letting them get pushed down with the water. Does that make sense? On Friday I'm going to do some good calf and toe stretches before I start and see if that helps at all. |

I've managed to hit my workouts...and most of them have been good. But the rest of the time, I'm DRAGGIN . I'm fighting a cold as well...does not help. I can't say I'm running out of Netflix yet...finishing up season 8 of 24. Going to start House of Cards or Walking Dead next...mix in a few movies. Hopefully we'll be outside in the next 3 weeks... |

The only thing I know is that I will cramp if I run first, which maybe is related to the cool water(?), so I stopped doing that. I bring a bottle of electrolytes to the pool. So it seems totally random to me. |

So it seems totally random to me. it hasn't happened in a long time, but I used to get similar cramps, especially if I ran or biked before the swim. They sometimes were so debilitating that I had difficulty climbing out of the pool. Honestly most of the time cramps (whether running, biking, or swimming and despite that nutrition & supplement manufacturers would like to convince us of otherwise) are an issue of fitness, not a lack of hydration or electrolytes. |

I really have been trying to sneak in a little nap every day, but I am thus far not very good at it. Napping is actually kinda hard... I am going to keep working at it - you know, train your weakness and all. |

Master 2621 Mechanicsburg, PA | Subject: RE: Ironman Lake Placid : Official Thread Hey all, About the leg/foot cramping thing. That use to happen to me years ago when I first started fitness swimming. Not often but it happened more so on hard swims. So I think for the most part it is a conditioning thing. I mean how many of you cramping are just starting out or back to some swim fitness? There are other reasons such as electrolytes or vitamin deficiencies, but I think you guy would have the same issues biking and running. |

Wondering if it has anything to do with flexibility? I know my ankles are fairly inflexible after so many years of running. Foot cramps are uniquely painful. I see other people in the pool suddenly stop and I know exactly what's happening. |

Coming off the wall is much more like skipping than running, for both the arch of the foot and the calf. I *think* incorporating plyometric stuff in my strength build a few years ago has helped as I no longer get them when swimming (knocks wood). On a couple of recent occasions I have gotten foot cramps in yoga (i am new to yoga) when doing poses like zen, pigeon, and even child's pose - all poses where the ankle is flexed much like when you kick. It seems to be most accute after something like downward dog. So it could be triggered by the extreme planter flexion caused from pushing off the wall (downward dog) and going right into pointing your toes on the kick (child's pose). At least with yoga I am not over my head in water when it happens. |

Master 2621 Mechanicsburg, PA | Subject: RE: Ironman Lake Placid : Official Thread BrianRunsPhilly - 2013-03-07 11:07 AM Yep you use those foot muscles in swimming a lot differently than biking or running. A key to a strong kick is a flexible ankle. You got to work on that ankle flexibility. Fins can help that as well.tasr - 2013-03-07 11:00 AM Hey all, About the leg/foot cramping thing. I just didn't while in Mexico, and have been sidelined by Giardia since then. Nasty little bugger. I haven't been wanting to be more than a few minutes from a bathroom (preferably a few steps). It was mis-diagnosed last week and I was told to just let it run its course. Antibiotics now, so hopefully I'll be back at it this weekend. I feel like I'm really missing some quality and key workouts, but am hopeful that my fitness level going into it will allow for a relatively quick bounce-back. Plenty of time. Between that and the sh!tstorm I walked into back at work, I've been scarce around these parts. |
