Got in an hour trainer ride before work and a 5k run over lunch. Getting to the place where I'm continually hungry. I tend to snack at times like this. Better tell my wife to hide the potato chips (my biggest weakness) Tongue out.

Sounds like a good weekend of workouts in our group!

Got outside today for my first ride since before Christmas. I rode for almost an hour! Longest ride since getting my bike last August. Felt great. I have no idea how far I went but the 55 minutes felt good enough by itself!

Lots of good training happening! We really need to extend weekends by another day or two so work doesn't get in the way. Weekends pass way to fast.

Stuartap - 2013-01-27 2:34 PM

Well I just got the crap kicked out of me for my workout today.  My LBS does two weekend rides. Sat is a 15-18 mile ride at about 15 mph.  Sunday's is usually a 25 mile ride in the 19-20 mph.  That's faster than I ride on my training ride and at the upper end distance wise but knowing we would be drafting I thought I would give it a go.

So I rode the 3 miles to the store and there were only six including me for the ride.  Maybe a temp in the high 30's when I left the house had something to do with it?

I was hanging in fine.  Two hills had me at the back of the pack but I was not holding them up.  At one point I actually led the pack for about three miles.  We were well on to our return when one of the guys wanted to know if anyone was interested in taking a detour.  A five mile addition to the ride with the first three a steady hill.  I figured in for a penny in for a pound so he and I split off.

He left me in the dust half way up but was nice enough to wait at the top of the hill.  Well the ride ended up being just under 35 miles instead of 25 and I averaged 19.6 mph.  I guess these are the things I am going to have to do to get better so I will be joining them again next Sunday.

Everybody enjoy what's left of the weekend.

Way to go Stuart! That is absolutely how to get faster on the bike.Crazy weekend for me. Good workout on Saturday. I thought I might get in a run in today but no dice. My son and I performed a duet tonight at a guitar recital which was a lot of fun and in light of all of our family drama lately, he needed some 'Dad time', and it went really well. So tomorrow--early to rise and hit the roads...

Michael you did it right.  Nothing is more important than that 'Dad time'.  Family should always come first.

My legs are more than a little sore right now and I have a run day tomorrow.  That will be interesting.  I might be tempted to skip it but with everyone here working so hard, like you, I will hit it again tomorrow.

Good work on the bike. Sometimes we surprise ourselves when we push our limits. Just take it really easy on the run and you'll be fine.

Michael-sounds like a good day. Any video out there on the guitar duet?

Good Morning. Wow this group moves fast. Go away for the weekend and come back to 100 pages...well maybe not that many.

I'm taking a week off from running. My left knee has been bothering me for the last few weeks. It was probably injured by moving 2 heavy basketball goals on a daily basis at work. We're going to take a week off and give it time to recover fully. Needless to say I will not be moving anymore goals in the future.

Hope everyone has a great week. My plan for the week is to turn into Aquaman.

Catwoman - My plan for the week is to turn into Aquaman.

Rene-have fun with that. I am swim only today and tomorrow and then the running/biking kick in. Smart to take the week off from running!

Hey all, Sorry I haven't been active lately. Between the last 2 weeks of training, and work, I haven't had much time to do anything except eat, run, work, and recovery. Had my last long weekend of training before my 100k on February 9th. Knocked out 24 miles on pretty technical single track tralls in pretty unseasonable temperatures. Had a little problem with the bladder in my hydration pack (after research it seems as if this is common) so I had to buy a replacement, and it is much better! Followed up with a nice and easy 16 mile run yesterday. Legs are feeling good, but I have to say I will be glad to do some speed work. Will have to do a quick turn around as I will have a 70.3 in late March. Lots of bike and swim focus is on my horizon!

I will be catching up in the 10 pages that I have missed out on in the next few days! Hope all is well with everyone.

P.S. LET THE TAPER BEGIN!

It was so nice out today that I rode to work. Got in an easy 1200yd swim over lunch. I had a light day in the office and rode home in 60 degree weather. Such a nice reminder of what spring will be like. Hope your week is off to a great start, too!

After my long ride yesterday I was still feeling a bit stiff this morning.  Still I am determined to stick with the plan.

It's a run day so I jumped on my bike for the 5.5 miles to my PT.  Since I was feeling like I was, I paced liked a recovery ride.  When I got there I jumped on the treadmill. This was my first week of increasing the distance by 10% so I kinda did that, moving from 2 miles to 2.25 miles.  I generally run in the 5.0 to 5.5 mph pace so I started at 5.0 today.

It was going OK so I decided to try out tje 'boiling the frog' concept.  At each lap I increased the speed by 0.1 mph until I got to my 5.5 which I held for two laps.  Then decided to go up to 5.6 for a lap.  I could feel the lower calf starting to tighten up so for my last lap I backed it off a bit.

By the time I was done I was happy I have a running plan that looks like it will work for me after failing miserably so many times before.  So much so that I added a 30 minute upper body weight routine before riding back home.

Considering how my body felt after my ride yesterday I feel great after my workout today.  Looking forward to a great week and hope everyone else has one as well!

Stuart. Nice work. It sounds like your plan is working great. Good job on backing off when things got a little tight in the calf. One of the only times I ever really hurt myself was when I kept running even when things didn't feel right.

You are proving yourself to be a very wise and motivated triathlete.

Way to go Stuart!  Sounds like a very good combination enthusiasm and good sense.

Training bombed for me yesterday, but I was able to move those workouts to today (which would normally have been a down day for me).

I can train through pouring rain, heat, pressure from coaches, pain, and cold to maybe 30F without curling into fetal position, but I find it hard to even breathe when my kids aren't happy.

Finding it hard to stay on track with my oldest having a tough time.

wannabefaster - 2013-01-27 3:33 PM So many congratulations in order. This continues to be a highly motivated and extremely motivating group to 'hang out' with. I just did my second swim of the week in a local high school pool. Two different high schools, two different pools. Both times I was significantly faster than I am in my usual pool. I have always felt like my regular pool is slow and this kind of confirms it for me. On both occasions I was maintaining much higher paces, at slightly lower effort, than I can ever hit in my everyday pool. Just an interesting observation. I am going to bring my tape measure one day and check the length.

So I have the same issue ... I go to my gym and swim there and I can never get any traction ... it feels like I am fighting through the water. Maybe it is because the lap pool is not very deep and when I stand up the water is about chest level. When I go to our local natatorium I feel like I am always really fast and the pool is deep. It seems the distance is the same but I am unsure ... I am right there with you ... not sure what that is ... :-)

On another note my training is going well and I seem to respond to the training plan my coach puts together for me. Since I had knee issues after the Thanksgiving Turkey Trot I started of from square one and he has me running by heart rate most of the time. He wants me to run at a pace that keeps my heart rate under 150 and I am having a hard time with that. I takes me a good 15 minutes of slowly ... and when I say slowly I mean slowly shuffling along to get it under 150.

I feel my swimming is getting stronger and I am making progress on my bike. Strongest month yet ... gotta love TRIATHLON ... lol

I know how you feel! I try to keep my HR under 148. At first, I felt like an old man shuffling down the street at that pace.

I started in July off at probably a 13 minute/mile pace at my heart rate and now I'm closer to 9:30. I do 95% of my runs this way and I got the fastest time I'd ever had in that 5K recently. (6:49/mile) I still feel like I'm improving, so I'll keep this up until I hit some sort of plateau.

MORNING CAMPERS!!

Yesterday was a spin session in the basement with DH.  Since he can't run, for the first time EVER I've been able to get him to spin with me  Surgery is 1 week from today so I'll be on my own again for maybe 6-8 weeks and then he'll be spinning again!

Good swim this am however that plus clearing the driveway from the snow/ice we got yesterday put me very late to work and I just can't seem to get going.

Enjoy your day!

That's where I am now except I AM an old man shuffling down the street! Frown  Since this being able to run at all is new to me it's great knowing what might be ahead. I can see 9:30 training in my future but under 7:00/mile, even in a race, seems a long way off.

Keep up the good work and I will keep chasing you.

Overnight work shift yesterday has knocked me on my butt. I went home after work and went straight to bed. Now I need to figure out how to fit two hours of training in to what remains of my day. I'll say it again, winning the lotto would make this all a little easier

Hey all, got my swim workout done this morning. I'm feeling much better about swim workouts, which is good since my workouts will increase in March from 2,500 meters to 3,000, and 3 days/week instead of 2. So, I guess I need to be ready for that!

Otherwise, status quo. I'm biking and running, pretty much routine.

Second day of swim only work is in the books. Today was a real mixed bag. Main set started pretty well but last set of 100's were significantly slower than last week.  It was a long workout for me at 3900 yards so maybe it was just fatigue. Swimming is hard to figure out!

Back to running tomorrow after almost a week off due to a sore calf. Definitely going to keep it slow and easy.

SO tomorrow, I'm thinking about going to the gym to run 400 meters or so.  Yeah that'll take 5 minutes and then what?

What do you think about me using my planned bike workout on the elliptical?  I'm using the winter bike workout with heart rate.  Should be ok to swap, right?

Thanks for your input.

Too windy today to ride plus I only had an hour so I spent some time on a NuStep.  I did 4 min at 100 steps/min the one minute at 130 steps x5.  Then 30 minutes of weight training.  One of those days where I just didn't have the time I would like so I did what fit in.  I will try to get some core exercise work in after dinner.  My PT has given me a 30 minute core routine he wants me doing every day for a few weeks.  I'll see how that goes.

Also one general comment for those who occasionally have an 'off day' in the pool.  When you feel like that do a few hundred yards a little slower and concentrate on stretching out your stroke.  Work on form and power instead of speed.  Sometimes that will kick the muscle memory back in and the rest of your workout will not be such a struggle.  That is how will do the last 100 yards of my warm-up 99% of the time.  Try it...maybe it will help you too.
