Congratulations Gretchen on the PR!
Congratulations Andrew on the consistency! It's nice once it becomes habit you don't even really think about it.

Did my first Lucky's Lake Swim this morning. Its awesome! Lucky has been opening his house for people to swim 1k across Lake Cane for over 30 years, thousands of people from all over the world have done the swim. If you're comming to Orlando, make the time to do it. (Check the website, and be early, theres a couple of safety rules for your first couple of times) Its one of the few things in Orlando that are free, and it's close to the parks, so no excuses!

P.S. let me know if your doing it so I can try to join you.

Struggled with motivation today, but got a good run in.

Yesterday was a rest day, so I had to get a workout in today.

This morning, I traveled from home to Columbus, IN for work. It's 85 and humid here today, we haven't experienced that type of weather in MN yet this year. I wasn't too excited to go out in the heat with the sun out. Also, an evening workout after travel and a day of work is not really something to look forward to.

Second, I can't stand the treadmill in my usual hotel. I don't know why, but I just don't like it. I think the belt moves too fast. The view is the wall. And today, the TV mounted to the dreadmill wasn't working. I ran about one minute and said FORGET IT!

So, I went outside and decided to do a 10k fartlek. Got it done.

Gook luck everyone, as part of the country sees a lot of heat, and we move in to summer. We'll have to race in this stuff, may as well train in it.

Couple of decent workouts over the last couple of days...and one really awful swim. After an extra rest day on Monday, yesterday was my long run, which went well. The swim that followed was awful and I ended up stopping after 1250yds. Today was better, with a solid 2700yd swim and then a 1:15 tempo ride at 90%ftp (2x20’ with 10’ ez spin between).

Nothing on my schedule today (as of 7:30)...guess it is a rst day! Its my birthday, so I'll take it. I think I'm going to get myself motivated here and wash my house today.

Andrew, yes spin bikes are definitely quieter.  As with anything, the more you pay generally the better they are.  My gym (and also the hotel gym I frequent the most) have the LifeFitness ICG models.  You obviously can't get them exactly to your position, but you can get close and they have integrated power meters that are at least directionally accurate for me.  The flywheel is also a different feel and you can't just stop pedaling.

Nothing beats your own bike outdoors but spinning is a lot better than nothing and I would estimate about 80-90% as effective as a trainer.

YMMV.

Thanks for the feedback. I totally agree that outside on your bike is best (and most enjoyable too) but it's all about finding the right work/family/training balance. 80-90% sounds a heck of a lot better than training gains found on the sofa

I 100% agree. I rarely get out on the bike (it is my least favorite discipline), but have done spin classes that I think more than adequately prepare me for my races. I'd so go for it, or get the quieter trainer as Gretchen recommended.

Riles, that sounds like a really cool event! If/when I make it back down to Orlando I will try to remember to check it out!

Rpaulson (I've forgotten your first name) - way to get it in! The heat can be really horrible, but it's great that you still got a workout in. I definitely could not run on a treadmill staring at a wall.

I got in about 1600 or so on Tuesday, but tweeked my shoulder partway through. I'm starting to get a little frustrated. I reached out to an acupuncturist to try that out, and scheduled a massage for next Saturday. Hoping something helps the pain. I'm finding it difficult to get motivated lately. I haven't been getting enough sleep either, so need to get back into a routine. This is my neverending struggle it seems.

Congrats on the race, Gretchen! Way to smash it!

Andrew, I agree with the others, spin bikes are quieter and when I’m home I actually try and take as many spin classes as I can because i feel like the class pushes me more than I would myself. - so I think it’s pretty good for training.

4 miles on the treadmill here in Fort Myers.

Hilly 1:30 on the bike outside today. It was going okay, but then i got lost and had to ride up this monster hill for a second time and then missed the turn and wrecked my bike and broke my cleat. I ended up caling my wife for a ride home. Not injured and new cleats already ordered, but today was a big slce of humble pie.

Wow, Riles, you knocked 10 minutes off your time, that’s fantastic!! Well done!

Gretchen, I’m glad to hear you’re okay (and hopefully the bike is too).

Got out for 1:20 ride in Louisville yesterday. Nice little hills to play on throughout this bike path and the best part is, no cars. Granted you have to navigate people sometimes and switchbacks to navigate ramps to bridges slow you down, but NO CARS! I’ll take it. Saturday I hiked for 8.5 miles. I’m on an overnight in New Jersey right now and the gym here is very sad. I’m going to look into any local gyms nearby which might offer day passes.
Had to suck it up and order a new bike helmet for home since I have my other one in KY. Kind of excited to pick it up when I get home next weekend. (It’s a helmet, but who doesn’t love new gear?) haha

Thanks, Jenn. I really had low motivation, and wasn't training regularly this time last year. Part of the reason I joined BT. =)

One of my tri club buddies gave me this tip, check with your health insurance provider, they may offer reduced rate gym memberships. For $35/mo. mine let's me join a national gym network, I can go to any gym in the network. Seems like it might be great for someone who travels as much as you do.

I like it because the gym most of the tri club uses is in the network (they also have a REALLY nice pool, and masters sessions) but it's out of my way Mon-Fri, so I go to a closer gym once or twice during the week.

Happy Monday! Is that an oxymoron? Tough VO2 max workout this morning and then a short run this afternoon. In between...meal planning, grocery shoppin, and mealprep. After that...mowing the lawn and giving the dog a bath. Now I'm too tired to cook (okay, not really, but I've lost my motivation now that I'm clean and sitting down!)

Long run this morning followed later by my long swim for the week. Run felt good, like I could go all day. When I got back, I realized I ran a casual 10k. Didn’t dawn on me while I was doing it, but seems weird (to me) that I’ve gotten to a point of fitness that I can casually go out and run a distance I once would have never fathomed being able to complete.

I love when I get to that point in my running. The 6-8 mile mark just feels free to me. You don't have to figure out run routes before you go, you can just explore and as long as you don't push it you can make it home.

Riles, that’s exactly what I do! My company does that through insurance so I pay $25/month and can use multiple gyms all over the US and Canada, it’s so great for traveling! I’m on another overnight here in Saucaus, NJ and just got back from an hour spin! So worth it with a traveling schedule. Tonight I head to Rockford, IL so I’ll see what gyms are around there.

Checking in for the week, and will be away from the forum for a few weeks after this.

I'm hitting all my workouts, when I get them in. Had two unplanned "rest days" over the weekend. I had planned to swim Friday and bike Saturday, but Friday's workout fell through so I only swam Saturday. I'm in the local Lions Club, and we had our annual softball tournament this last weekend. I run the beer garden for 90 softball teams and fans, so was tied up with that, almost all day every day Friday to Sunday. We did sell 52 kegs of cold Coors Light though!

Now in the midst of getting in 4 solid workouts in 4 days.

THEN, 11 days off! I'm taking my family on an RV road trip to Yellowstone National Park and Custer State Park on June 7th to 17th. The timing isn't great, but I knew about this trip going into the training. I will aim to get in a few runs - maybe at altitude, maybe not. I figure some laps around the Yellowstone campground loops should be rather safe - but could be some impromptu speed work if I see a bear or bison a bit too close!

Coming back, I'll have 11 days to train before race day, including of course some sort of taper. In the end, I'm going for a finish in the Olympic distance, not a win. I know I can swim 1500m, bike 26+ miles, and run 6.2 miles. So I'm comfortable with the break.

Any advice to consider during this time off from training?

With that break in training on the bike and swim, you'll want to spend the majority of your time once you get back on those, not so much to gain more fitness but to get some of that muscle memory back.  Hopefully you won't have to worry about running as you'll get a few in on your journey.  With swimming you don't even really need to taper anyway - my daughter's swim team "taper" practices are only 4K yards instead of 5K LOL.

There's a rule of thumb that it takes the same amount of time to regain lost fitness as the time off, so if you can get in good workout the next 4 days and then for a week after you get back, you'll be fine.

6-8 miles was always a good sweet spot for running for me, long enough that you build some endurance but short enough that it doesn't break you down too much and you just get into a zone.

And that's funny what Gretchen said about an easy 10K after not being able to think about doing the distance at all.  I think we've all been through that - mine is with swimming.  My warmup now is longer than my full workouts for my first tri 9 years ago.

Enjoy it. =)

Seriously though, you should be able to find some nice hiking trails to run on. I'd pack goggles & swim shorts too, theres probably some nice lakes to get an OWS or two in. Slow it down and enjoy the scenery. If your worried about wildlife, talk to park rangers, my guess is that daylight hours, on popular trails, you probably don't have much to worry about except snakes.

Now here I was feeling happy with my swim today and see a workout like that to blow me out of the water.

I was
5x50 warm up, 1:55-2:00 pace
5x100 hard, 1:45-1:50 pace
5x50 cool down, 1:55-2:00 pace.

1:000m total. Longest swim since Ironman, March 2017.
