Havin'Fun - 2009-04-29 4:38 PM Hi gang, this is not tri related...but I have to share.  Today we found out that my husband does NOT have cancer.  We have been living under that cloud for the last 5 days.  It was a 90% chance of cancer.  Turns out he has a very rare condition that is not even enough to treat.    Good news, he can live to be a very old man with this "issue".  This and the fact my 6 yr old has been very, very sick for the last week (starting to make a little progress) has been tough.

I have done most of my workouts, I have a HIM scheduled for May 9th, but not all workouts have had the focus they deserve.  Tonight I will ride for 2 hrs and either veg or kick a$$.  Not sure which (I am relieved, but I think I am beginning to feel the stress of everything since now I no longer need to be strong for everyone).

But I now know we will go to FL, we will have a great family vacation, and I will race.
Thanks for letting me share.

That's great news!  you and the husband should go out and celebrate!  and then go kick some butt on your workouts!

Dear Steve,

Congratulations! You are now registered for 2009 Ironman 70.3 Boise.

Nice.  Is this the precursor to your IM Coeur d'Alene?  I mean if you train like it, you may as well do it!
Who agrees with me?

Way to be Steve!

I have a little reading to do in order to catch up.

I registered for that 5k tomorrow, I hope to break the 20 minute mark and there is only one way to see if I can do it - RACE!

Okay boys, I need some B-Day suggestions.  My old man is turning 40. What are some cool toys out there for 40 year old boys?  Here are my thoughts, computrainer (yes I get to use it too ) a flat screen,  or race wheels.    Don't know if I can afford the race wheels.  I've already made arrangements with the LBS to overwork his bike with a kick stand, streamers, chime bell, training wheels, lots of reflectors, big flowery basket on the front, large orange flag standing up off the seat, basically make it OLD MAN safe (he he he).  Anyone have any other cool ideas?  I am very open to suggestions.  He does play ice hockey as well and has mentioned some new gear, but the gear he has needs replacing so I feel those are things he needs anyway and it would kind of be cheating him out of a gift going that route.
Educate me on race wheels.  The most I know are ZIPPS and HEDS.  Any other good brands I should look into?

I think one thing he would love for his birthday is something called "An afternoon Delight." Cool Actually, maybe an afternoon delight then some new wheels. How about that new Garmin coming out? Waterproof ,etc, etc??

LOL, the old man bike is great.

HMM, lots to choose from, he is a roady right not a triathlete?  Obviously the CT would be nice but like the race wheels they are pricey.  Good brands Planet-X, Neuvation, Williams, Flashpoint (set on ST right now for 1k),blackwell (no longer in production but can still get them),Xentis (nice but pricey).  The prices for those listed are all over the board.  They all make depper carbon clinchers/tubulars which are nice.  Neuvation is probably the cheapest of the list but they are good wheels.

Could go with just a nice rear wheel with a PT, they are now 650 or so new, not sure how much they are on a better wheel.

Also I picked up some New Balance shoes last night.  Tried on a bunch of pairs and they were the only ones that I didn't notice being on my feet.  Meaning some had high arches, some seemed to just have bumps in the toe-box or whatever that I could feel walking around.  They were the 1063's.

RACE WHEELS!!!!!  There is something about them that just make you feel fast and cool.

Hello all, checking in again.  Going a little crazy on my  "mandatory rest".  Getting back on the bike tomorrow Yee Haw!.  MRI on monday then doc will tell me if RnR San Diego is even a possibility.  Got the OK for the bike though so I guess I am looking forward to B2B.  Sounds like everyone is doing great, and reading the posts is keeping me motivated!

Ok, I did a little checking and there are several community fund slots open for 2009.  I guess if Steve doesn't feel ready for CD in June, he could swing on over to Madison in September.  Hell, I would even be his sherpa for the day!

WOW!!!! Just caught up from page 28 and have a few specific things to mention...

I wish the forum had sequential post numbers within a thread so you could easily refer to a specific post.

Shannon, I have also never done race - of any sort.

JHagerman, awesome race.  Sounds like an athlete I can only dream of being.  Looking forward to the sub 20 this weekend!

Steve, Back on page 36 you mention feeling bad during a taper.  I've been miserable since last Wednesday.  Tired and hungry.  You confirmed everything my local triathlete freinds said.  They were glad I was feeling this way.  I figured they were just BSing me to keep my spirits up.  Thanks.
Good Luck with the Boise 70.3

Suzy, my 9 year old is 5'4"

Linda, great news about your husband.  Hope your kid gets better soon as well.  I suspect the rest of your training and race will be easy compared to fighting thru your last several weeks.

Chet, glad you're getting back in the game.

I'm caught up.  I left out a lot of stuff I could/should have commented on.

I've got a few years to go before I hit 40 but I've already started dropping the stripper home visit mixed in with a few cases of beer hint to my wife.  I guess wheels would be cool to though.

Suzy- Thanks for doing all the research!  I feel much better now!  All my money, and fundraising efforts this year are going towards the livestrong ride!! So not for me!   I will be going up to Canada again in August to volunteer, cheer on friends, and probably sign up for next year!  I like this every other year thing....

Tracy- I say computrainer.  The long term, year round, both of you use benefit is way greater than race wheels.

Reuben- Shocking I know what I am talking about sometimes!  I guess that is what reading does for ya !

Chet- I hope you are hanging there, both mentally and physically!!

I love insurance...Just got off the phone with them. I have to pay a $500 deductable for my homeowner insurance. I claimed $1700 of loss. As well as there is a $500 deductable for the auto insurance side. Window cost $400 to replace.
So I called them up...They are cutting me a check for $1200($1700-500 deductable), and they are waving the deductable on the auto. So I'm not out any money really, and i'm going to get $1200+$400 back. Just need to replace all the old stuff.
WELL THEN, Hello Garmin 310XT!!!!!! This news make this past week very bearable now!
Off to the gym.

Steve--once you drop the LIVESTRONG brand name it is hard for me to argue so I guess you are off the hook, but I wish someone in this group would step up to an IM in '09.  We are going to cheer on a friend at IM AZ  in November.  I would be happy to raise my pom-poms for a SWBKRUN team member too. Anyone?

Tracy-I'm with Steve. I don't know anything about race wheels, but spending time on the CT this winter and now getting my own, I think it is a great investment.  And the plus is you can do it too.

Reuben-I am not sure how to fee about the fact that your kid is 5'4" and I am 4'10" and we basically weigh the same.  Oh, and he's 9!  Just keeps gettig better and better.

Off for another swim lesson. I promise not to come back any crabbier than when I left!

Maybe we should just go out and do one some weekend we don't have anything planned... Like a "fun run!"

Frankly I am looking forward to not have to think about racing, or training!?  I am just training for fun. I enjoy it.  I am going to commit to a 50k in September so come July I will start ramping up my trail running.... But other than that it is all fun!  I have no expectations for Boise but to have a good time!  We are staying w/ my wife friend from college and so I don't want to be a prude while I am there... This means lots of cocktails...

Thats my outlook for the year as well.  Maybe if I feel better about long swims I might try something longer next year but will have to see how this season of OWS'ing goes.  Have a lesson next week.

So how did everyone do this month?

Just starting to ramp up the bike miles since the weather is getting nice.  Run miles are down since no long run scheduled for a few months, and swim numbers really up, trying now to get in at least 7000M a week.  Also, still have an hour tempo run today so run and bike hours are almost exactly the same.

April's totals:

Bike:13h 50m 22s  - 265.69 Mi
Run:12h 46m 20s  - 71.12 Mi
Swim:9h 56m 17s  - 26950 M

My running leaves something to be desired, but I have been on the sidelines the last couple weeks since I turned my foot...actually didn't ride a week also because of it.  Looking to take it pretty easy the first couple weeks of this month and start my HIM plan mid month.  Hopefully my foot will be good to go then.
