trirun26 - 2011-02-02 10:33 AM I am on the edge about signing up or not. This would be my 2nd IM if I do it. I am just wondering how the swim in the river is...is the water totally black? brown?  slimy? I know this sounds stupid and or funny to some of you reading it but my head gets to me when I get into water that I can not at all!! I totally prefer ocean swims so this is a factor for me.

I appreciate any info!

happy tranining....Alicia

Hi Alicia,

Entry is near the closing stages so don't hesitate.
I was my first swim in a river and it felt the same as the other lake swims I've had in the past. I was able to see up to my hand during the stroke (I am blind as a bat!). Once you get use to the darkness or inability to see like a pool, the rest is easy and all down hill.

In 2010 the water felt like bath water during practice and race day. It was not bad at all and in re: to the color (I am color blind) -I'd say is brownish (someone else can clarify the color) and is not slimy. I hope this helps.

sign up! you've got nothing to lose and with one IM under your belt, this should be a no brainer

Hello! First in foremost, plese check out my blog for an interview with none other than...
Fred "The Cube" Mehrer! (The link is below in my signature).

Welcome Redremy!
Welcome NasinAK!

Welcome TRIRUN26...My experience during the swim of the 2009 edition of IMLOU was similar to what others have reported. I would describe the river as coffee-with-cream-brown. It was warm for sure. I didn't find sighting difficult, but you won't see much. I did have two strange encounters.
1. I was swimming the first portion which takes us upriver and I thought I kept touching the guy in front of me. It turned out to be sand. I didn't even know I was swimming in such shallow water. It might have been a sandbar.
2. I felt a large log...a tree really with my hand and scraped my shin lightly on it. I turned my head back and shouted, "Tree!" and kept going.
Outside of these two bizzare experiences, after getting around the first turn  that has us headed back downriver, it was fine. I had plenty of space, but I could have grouped up if I wanted to. I didn't notice the current in either direction, but I'm sure it was a factor.
There is debris in the river, no doubt about it, but it is mostly along the shore. It was only a factor the one time.
I certainly would make a real effort at not ingesting the water.
That's as honest as I can be about it...and I'm going back because IMLOU is a wonderful venue.
The swim start is excellent, the bike is rolling, varied, and scenic, and the run is flat and doable.
It's a great place to do an IM.

I will post my race report from 2009 shortly, and you can read the swim portion if you would like.

Peace,
~Sam

This is the link to my 2009 report. I noticed that you will want to read the sidebar where it says swimming, but I also noticed that you might not get much more information about the swim than what I gave you.

Hey all!

Why I might be one of the happiest people on the planet. I ran a 10k today without any issues after two months of ITB problems. :::knocks on wood:::

This will be my first Ironman and I look forward in getting to know everyone!

I am pleased (?) to hear the river appears to be about the same as the lakes in my neck of the woods. Maybe even better. Around here, you can't see your hand in front of your face. The local tri is called "MUDWATER TRIATHLON" for a reason

Quick question. How does the official timing work at louisville? For example, if I were to enter the water 1/2 hour after the start of the race because of the line, would I only have 16 1/2 hours to be an official finisher? Thanks for the help, this will be my 2nd IM. I am really looking forward to racing Louisville either way.

Good question, newb.  It is my understanding that the cut off is midnight no matter what time you enter the water.  But others can clarify.

On that same note, I've seen footage, and it looks as though they shuffle racers into the water rather quickly, but does anyone know what time the last person started last year?  Just curious.  I'm not concerned about finishing time, but was interested in how quickly they get everybody started.

I should have finished reading before i pressed submit. The article also said it took 45 minutes in 2008.  It sounds like you need to make the swim cutoff time,  regardless of start time.

Hi again,

Ok I know I am driving myself and my husband nuts. Regarding the swim cut off time since this a time trial style here is what I just found which is not the same as the info on a prior post.

  • What is the swim like?
The Louisville swim is the most unique swim on the IM calendar. Louisville is a time trial start while every other US Ironman is a wave start. The start order is “first come, first served,” and the countdown for the swim cutoff begins when the LAST person gets in the water. This is how it works out on race day:

    • Get your transition set up and then you’ll walk about half mile upriver to a small park/dock to get in line. Your position in line is your position in the line, and the earlier you get in line, the closer you are to the front, the closer to 7am you get in the water and the more time (see swim cutoff note above) you have to complete the swim.
    • At 7am the first age-grouper gets in the water and the organizers do their best to start the next and the next and the next in 1-2 second intervals. You can do the math, but in ’07 it took them about 37 minutes to get everyone in the water. In ’08 it took 45 minutes. If you are in danger of not making the swim cutoff, it behooves you to get in line very, very early.
    • You will swim upriver, but between an island and the mainland, so there is very little to no current. You’ll swim past the end of the island a few hundred meters, make a left and a left again into the current, then swim downriver to the swim exit and transition area. It’s funky, but if you look at the historical swim times from the event you’ll see that they look to be on par with every other Ironman swim. More importantly, everyone has to do it so it’s not a big deal.

This is from the endurance nation report of 2009 http://www.endurancenation.us/blog/2009/08/11/ironman-louisville-2009-race-preview/

So do I understand that the cutoff for the swim is after the last person who enters the river?

I sincerely apologize for my craziness..;-)...Alicia

Alicia, according to the IMKY website it is 2:20 after the last athlete gets in the water.  However, you still only have until midnight so if you get in the water at 7:30, you have 16.5 hours to finish the whole thing vs. 17 hours if you get in the water at 7.

Hi there everyone!  This will be my first time doing IM Louisville! (This is also my first time posting on a race discussion thread! lol!)  Just signed up for the race on Monday!  I've done 2 ironmans previously - IM Canada 08 & IM Wisconsin 09.  Did absolutely nothing, race-wise, through 2010 and decided I needed to get back into it in order to regain my sanity!

I've read through a few of the messages here and it's nice to see that a lot of people have the same concerns that I do (i.e. the swim!!).  Look forward to reading/posting some more!

The much anticipated...I'm mean, the thing some of you were wondering about...rather, I think one of you was somewhat curious about when I would post another terribly exciting Road to Ironman video.
Well, Episode 5 is up. Simply go to my blog which is linked in my signature, then scoll down in my blog and select Episode 5, which will be found on the right hand side.
You will find that I did not speak loudly or clearly enough. I'm still learning, please excuse. When I think I am doing these things, I find out later that I am not.
Anyway...it is there for the viewing if you want to see it.
Peace.
