If y'all wouldn't mind sharing, how many centuries will you have done this spring in training before CdA?  I'm feeling a little underprepared with only 3 (should have been 4 with this past weekend).  I've done 3 80+ so far and will do 1 more after peak week.

mallen4574 - 2012-05-14 11:20 AM I hate to let the cat out of the bag here but a disc is not affected by winds very much. It's more of a deep front wheel problem. In fact running a deeper rear than front will help stabilize you. Ie an 808 rear 404 front. I'll be on a disc and an 808 FC front. I've ridden a 90 mm front in some pretty Pugh conditions and been okay. You just shouldnt throw on a 1080 on race day and expect to feel all that confident.

X3.  I agree that the deeper front wheel is definitely more of an issue than what's on your rear wheel.  And the old rule of nothing new on race day certainly holds for wheels.  All that being said, my own comfort level has been most affected on the new course by the blustery gusts coming off of semi's when they go by 8 feet away at 60+ mph.  Certainly gets your attention when you're doing 40-ish mph!  Safe training to everyone these last few weeks.

just checked my log.  five 100+ mile rides and two 90+ mile rides.  have two or three 100+ mile rides left.  i committed to more bit fitness this year.  curious to see how it translates on the course. don't forget we have no hills in South Florida and I need the extra miles to help offset the hills and fatigue.

by race day 4 full 112 rides and 4 80+ rides. just make sure that you do a brick at least once after the full ride so that you know what it will fell like. you should be fine.

something else that I learned this weekend was to use sun screen on the bike. OUCH, it only hurts when I move, or the covers hit it.

I will have 4, 100+ rides in the book by CDA.  Maybe 3, 80-90 rides.

I am a bit worried about the downhill sections of the new bike course, but I guess I should worry about it at this point.  If I have to stay on the horns and tuck I will.  I would love to think I am brave enough to stay in aero at 45+ mph but I dont know if I am....

i am running 404 FC front and back (cuz thats what i have) and I get tossed around in 15 mph winds enough to freak me out.  If its going to be windy on race day I am just going to run my stock wheels and save the stress.  So I get to T2 a minute or five behind my Zipp time-I am totally ok with that at this point.

Blessings on all of your training and I can't wait!

My training plan calls for 2 100 milers. I am thinking about counting this weekends 70+ MT bike ride as one of them.

+1 on the down hill. I am tucking and holding horn. Wish I wasn't such a wuss but it is what it is. I will stay aero up to to about 35, maybe more experience will change that but I don't like the feeling of instability. Throw in the fact that I will be riding 78's front and back.....

Nice job everyone! It is really inspiring to see how dedicated you are.....

regarding the downhills (if I fall), my feeling is that it's going to hurt at 30, 35, or 45.  Might as well tuck and hope for the best.

smithe68 - 2012-05-14 10:50 AM 52+ I am going in!

You're a better man than I am!  I'm waiting for 56.

"better"?  hah, plain stupid is what I am!  I lasted about 200 yds, my body was warm but, my face was so cold I couldn't breath, couldn't slowly release air out, nothing, it was brutal.  My buddy has a place at a small lake and said today the water temp by the dock was about 70, gonna start heading up there after work for something a lot more sane.

On another note, I am only doing 1 century and a few 70+ rides.

Thanks for all of the wheel advice. I think I am going to go ahead and go with my 404 on the front and then I am going to purchase a Wheelbuilder.com cover for my 808 rear and try it out when I come up for my clubs training weekend over Memorial Day and see what I think. We are planning on riding the whole course so I will see what I think then.

As for long rides. I will have a total of 4 100+ mile rides and about another 5 75+ mile rides. They have been getting easier for sure but I wish I could have done about double what I did.

You all make me feel inadequite. I put two 100 milers in my training plan, one turned into 85. The other is this Sunday with 7000 feet elevation gain. Hoping I can do it. The hot weather has hit and it tears me up. Been sick all week, but I still managed 12 hours. I'm trying nhot to compare myself with all you animals, but it's hard.

I've done four 100+ already this year and I've got three more before CDA. The first ironman I ever did I only rode one 100 and was fine. But I plan to ride a lot harder on this one so I've done a lot more. X2 on the disk not being the problem in the wind. You've got a lot more weight on that seat than on the aerobars. That front wheel will twist in windy conditions (due to its use to steer you). The back wheel obviously can't turn so the wind would have to blow you so hard as to over come the friction of the wheel. Very unlikely with the weight on the back wheel. On another note...unless you can ride close to a 60min 40k TT you shouldn't even be riding a disk. I won't go into the physics and dynamics behind it, but let's just say an 808 would suit you better. Especially on a hilly course..

Well the good news is that I rode right around an hour for my last Olympic that I did lat year and my cycling fitness is far stronger now then it was then so I guess that means I am qualified to look at running a disk

I'll have eight 100+ rides in by CdA (five are done!)...and six 80+.  Thankfully, I didn't know the full of it until recently.  I like to take things one week at a time so I don't freak out about the volume.  My longest ride is this weekend at 120 and I'm not sure I wanted to know that.  I'm amazed at the differences in training plans out there.  I watched friends train for IMAZ last year on much fewer long runs/rides and they did really well on race day.  Just trying to trust my coach.  So far, so good.

Lol sorry I didn't mean you in particular. I was generalizing saying most people will ride faster with a deep rear wheel rather than a disk.

This is why I tell everyone to submerge themselves in the water for a bit before the actual gun goes off.  Get your face wet and stay under as long as you can stand it, repeat a few times.  It sucks but you don't want to deal with that shock when you're trying to actually, you know, swim fast

I did submerge myself, probably not long enough, nor was it ever going to be enough likely!

You just have to get over that shock. It takes about 5-10 minutes then your feet hands face are used to it. If your body is warm you're going to be fine.

Yes. Hands, face and feet need about 10 minutes to get used to it. Another tip I picked up when I did a 1/2 that the temp was 52 was to prefill your suit with warm water right before you get in. This saves your body from having to warm up the cold water you let into your suit. It seemed to help me when I did it. But then again, my face hurt so bad I don't think it mattered lol.

No water available yesterday to prewarm myself but, I will try spending more time acclimating. On a related note, water temp broke 56 today!

Indeed!  Coldest water I ever swam in was 62 and that wasn't too bad.  If we can get near that it will definitely ease my mind somewhat.

So the local tri shop posted up that they saw 64 somewhere in the lake yesterday.  I am going to assume it's in the area of the race.  The United States Geological Survey (USGS) checks the temp at a different spot, so this could be very likely with the temps we have had the last few days.  Here's hoping!
