Veteran ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() kimmax - 2012-05-03 9:58 PM Evening everyone! We're having a doozy of a rain storm here tonight. Very fun though my puppy is freaked out - crazy cute! So I've been suffering from tight IT bands and a sore hamstring/glute for months now. I foam roll my whole body whenever I can and it seems that when I rest it's even worse. Not knowing what to do I booked an appointment at this place I saw while on one of my runs called Kinetica. The guy is a chiropractor but does ART and deep tissue massage. This is my first exposure to it and YOWZA!! The most painful massage I've EVER had but he gave me some interesting insights - basically he said my knee was turning in a bit which caused my hip to turn out and stretch my band. He gave me a bunch of exercises to try to see if I can strengthen my glutes and open the hip up. I'm feeling pretty positive about the experience though I'm pretty sore and tender now. Has anyone else had experience with this form of massage? He also advocates bare foot running. One new thing at a time though...
Hi Marcia - I havent tried ART but I now have deep tissue massage once a month and LOVE them! (As long as I remember to breath and relax that is) once you become acquainted with the 'discomfort' you'll really appreciate the benefits afterwards. |

Master ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Today I rode completely alone for the whole ride because I had to come back early, therefore I started about 45 minutes ahead of my group. It was good, a lot of serenity... Lots of mud, a river crossing (twice) great scenery and a bunch of other crazy people running through the woods. Wonderful way to spend a Saturday morning. Now off to the pool for swim lessons for my youngest. |

Expert ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Huge success for me today! My 2nd race of the year, this was my first race ever last year, and I killed it! I finished this sprint last year in 1:19:41, I set a goal of finishing in 1:10 or better this year, and finished today in 1:08:59! All I can say is the mileage and the training is paying huge dividends. Now, question for the group: This was a sprint tri, 600 yard swim, 12.3 mile bike and 2.8 mile run. So the run maybe falls just a hair short of the typical sprint distance. How many workouts can I log for today? Should I go out and run .3 miles to equal the standard 5k? |

Extreme Veteran ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() I'm definitely not in the running for this challenge. I had a horrible day at work yesterday and finished late, meaning that I missed my window of opportunity to go for a swim. Could have gone for a run when I got home, but time on the sofa won out... With 10 weeks to go till IM, I officially need to HTFU and get it done. Today I went to the tri club swim session and had a great swim. We did loads of 50's off 60sec. Turned out I was the only one in my lane who could maintain that pace, so was feeling really good about it. Also had a good chat after the session with a lady who was visiting from Toronto, who will be doing her 10th IM at IMFL this year. That was quite inspiring. Tomorrow morning we're going to take an easy pootle about the bike and run routes for our sprint on Monday. They've sent out the start lists for the race and I'm wondering if I put the wrong swim time in. It's a 400yd pool swim, with the slower people starting first. Somehow, out of 228 competitors I've landed up as no. 202, in the next to last wave. So from previous experience, I think I'm going to be the last person out on the course... I'm just hoping some of my friends hang around till I finish. I think most of them will be finished before I even start. - Gabe: S 3 / B 3 / R 2 / Rest Days 0 ; Total = 8 ; 09:12'24" |

Regular ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() I went out for about 11.5 miles on the bike today and it pretty much felt terrible. April was a lost month for training and I felt it today. I've decided I'm going to bail on racing for this year and maybe try again next year. I still have to learn how to balance work, family, and other stuff and it's just not happening right now. I haven't signed up for any races so at least there's no lost money. I'll still get in random workouts and see if I can get in shape enough to train for something next year. |

Veteran ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Great job Andy! Hi Scott, I just lost 2 weeks of training after surgery and I have a sprint coming up in 4 weeks, so I can relate. I also support family financially, work full time and have a child. It is hard to juggle everything isn't it? Ernesto, wow what a bike ride, you are inspiring! |

Veteran ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Great job Andy!!!! After Scott returned from his ride, I went after mine. I decided to take a cut through from the last ride I did.. The cut through, a right turn instead of left heads straight up! For me, is was a mental breakthrough. I didn't care about speed, just being able to get to the top and having enough in the tank to return home. Home means, back up another hill! Total mileage was 13.4 (didn't start my watch when I left) in 1:08. slow going but very happy! - Gabe: S 3 / B 3 / R 2 / Rest Days 0 ; Total = 8 ; 09:12'24" Link of the ride http://connect.garmin.com/player/175102496 Edited by jenputnam 2012-05-05 7:03 PM |

How is the heat right now compared to your IMTX last year? Today I had a good, fun bike ride w/ 5000 ft of climbing (in liu of the winds I will be facing in TX) and the last semi-long one before my IM as I begin to taper finally! Master ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() @Scott and Jennie Putnam: you will not see a whole lot of improvements until training becomes a routine again, but don't stress out. We all have lives to live, family, work and social commitments. I learned to go with the flow and give in when I have to, take back when I possible. The good news is that it doesn't take that long to do so, three or four weeks usually does the trick. @Lynne: thanks! I am seeing improvements on the bike, mostly because I put a lot of hard work in the years past to get faster in this leg since it represents 50% of the time spent in a triathlon, if not more. @Chris: I see a lot of pool running again... Is that achilles aching again? @Marcia: You're kicking butt in the contest! @Gabe: it is definitely hotter this year, maybe a whole five degrees. The good thing is that being Texas the way it is, I wouldn't be surprised if we got down to the sixties next week. I would like to have a long talk with you about heat management a few days before IMTX. Another thing: try to dial your nutrition, you don't want to be one of those retching your guts on the side of the road... @everybody: keep in mind that the winner will be the one with the most workouts, I doubt it will be defined with time. This said, keep the workouts short, fun and challenging. It is very easy for the body to recover from this short stuff. If you're feeling that the volume is making you tired, lower the intensity. Whatever you do though, keep the frequency going. One of the things that creates the best adaptations in the body is "periodization", they hammered me with this a lot in the USAT Coaching Classes. ![]() | ![]() Great race Andy! Me. First Communion weekend for youngest daughter. Lots of restaurant meals and big party meals at home with friends and relatives. So the last three or four days I have been following the Eat Like a Pig™ diet. I refuse to weigh myself this morning. I will do so later in the week. My marathon is Saturday. So I have not been training much, following an improvised taper. (I'm so off my training plan that following it would have been an increase in mileage, not a decrease.) Ernesto, the reason I've been pool running is the achilles is aching a little, but not that bad, but I figured that it is best to give it a good rest before the race. The plan for the race is to run every mile at 7:55 on the Garmin (which is about 7:59 in reality). Weather looks good. One week out the forecast is 45 degrees at race time (7 AM), going up to 55 by 10 AM. Add cloud cover (which is supposed to be spotty) and that is close to perfect. Of course, one week out weather forecasts are far from perfect. |

Of course, one week out weather forecasts are far from perfect. If you try Texas, the forecast from the day before is inaccurate about half the times, let alone one week... One of the things that you can try after doing the marathon is putting some of your long runs in nature trails, they will give your stabilizers a lot of strength to support the foot's landing without the protection of the thick outsoles. This might prevent injury a bit better, although your injury came from overuse and not from bad form. |
