Well, overall, yesterday’s race went pretty well. My family came out from Rochester Saturday, so I spent some time with them, before going through my bag one more time and heading to bed. Had to get up at 3:45 to head to the race because it was an hour away and opened at 5:00 (my younger brother was real happy with that). Got my transition area all set up, hung out a bit, went for a mile or so warm up run, then got the wetsuit on and warmed up in the water.

Swim: 21:28 – The swim went pretty well. I went off in the second wave, 5 minutes after the men 40 and over. We managed to have an exceptionally violent start, at least from my point of view, with several people getting hit trying to get a good line on the first buoy. I managed to get clear pretty quickly and settle in. By around the halfway point, I started running in to the back end of the first wave. Luckily it was pretty spread out, so I managed to swim past people without too much difficulty.

T1: 2:01 – Definitely an area I need to improve on. Managed to get the wetsuit off better this time, but still pretty slow overall. Bike shoes slowed me down too, I think it’s time for me to finally figure out how to start with them clipped in…

Bike: 1:09:51 – The bike course was relatively flat, with a few rollers and one substantial hill into and out of the park where transition was. However, it was impressively windy out there. Overall, I wasn’t terribly thrilled with my bike. My legs were just not feeling it for the first 5 miles or so. After that I finally got into some form of rhythm, but I just could not settle where I wanted to. The course itself was very convoluted, full of loops, out and backs, and one U turn over a dirt road. Thankfully, it was very well marked and there were volunteers and police at every intersection where you could possibly go the wrong way.

T2: 1:16 – Pretty happy with this. Lost a few second because someone had racked their bike directly over my gear, but just slid it over, grabbed my shoes and race belt, and got going.

Run: 50:25 – Ah the run, always my worst enemy. The run course here was almost entirely on cross country trails within the park. During the pre-race time, the announcer mentioned that it was challenging course. Well, I felt lied to. It was not a challenging course, it was brutal. As soon as you leave transition, you go up some stone steps, up a little hill, and into the woods. At this point, the vast majority of the trail is made up of soft loose sand. The first three miles are mostly uphill, with a few little switchbacks. By the time I got to mile three, I was desperately trying to hold on to 9:00min/mi, which is slow even for me. Luckily, soon after that, we went out on to a road for a little bit. Finally on some solid ground, I managed to regroup. While the road only lasted for maybe half a mile, it was enough settle me down a bit. As the course went back in to the woods, it finally started going back downhill. I made much better time the second half, and was actually feeling pretty good for most of it. As you come out of the woods, the finish chute is not even 100 yards away, and you can see the timer. So, as I come out, I look up, and see 2:29:49. So I just took off at a dead sprint for the finish, aiming to get under 2:25. Well, final time – 2:24:59. :-) Seeing as this was my second Olympic, and my first one was around 2:45, I was pretty psyched. Plus I ended up 2nd in my age group, with the winner finishing 8th overall.

Congrats on your HUGE PR!! :-) Even with the brutal run course, and a few minor issues, you still rocked it!

Careful what you say! My son and I had the day together so went for a short hike before sushi. Oh and that is a large glacier behind him, so crazy!

I don't like duathlons!

It was supposed to be an Oly tri, in keeping with tradition, the first run was 5K around the swim buoys. My strategy was to not let my first run go below a certain pace (my 9 mile pace) so I'd have something left for the second run, which was a 10K in the heat. I stuck with the plan but watched my competition all hit T1 before I did.

On the bike they just all got away from me. It was frustrating. It's a beautiful course, somewhat hilly and at altitude, and I felt like I did it as fast as possible, but they just rode away from me. The second run was hot and hilly and I caught a few folks. The last couple miles were really painful, and I definitely didn't have anything left at the finish line.

Overall, I was pleased with my race "execution". I trained for a 6 mile run, not a 9 mile one, so I think I adapted as well as possible. But I was a little disappointed in my results. Some of it was just a lot of fast people showed up for this race--something not in my control. But some of it was that I worked so hard on the bike this year and only improved slightly (average of 18.2 mph compared to 17.7 on the same course last year). I was hoping to improve to 19 mph average, but perhaps that wasn't realistic.

More biking! More faster biking!
Jaime

I think that is great improvement after coming off a run!!!! CONGRATS! I am in the same boat as "more biking, more faster biking"

Well I had a good motivating weekend..since Friday I have swam (swum?) /biked/run 99 miles --- I know...one mile short!! But all of those were pretty hard fought as mentally I was just shot this weekend. My legs kept cramping on the bike (and I went 10 miles in the wrong direction!) and then felt like lead this morning on my run...but I didn't give up. Just thought keep moving forward and I did. I just got to believe I'm capable of more than I think!

I also just booked at training stay at Tremblant in a month...all by myself..I could care less if I bike swim or run...I'll be all alone for 3 whole days!!

should be an interesting week with the kids at home but it just for one week and then camp starts!!

wow!!! keeping going on tired legs should get double miles!

I did another OWS this morning, very consistent to Sunday's pace and significantly quicker than the pace in Florida last month.  I just need to get my head focused on swimming my way and not worrying about what is going on around me this Saturday.

What is on your training plans today?

Never done a Du and I think I'll keep it that way! The swim is the thing I have in my favor -- I just think it's so tricky pacing those runs!

Fun is at 6 mile run at 5:30am - 69 degrees...91% humidity...ugh!! It was by far my slowest run in a long time.

Summer is officially here with a threat of thunderstorms everyday for the next 2 weeks!

And Robin, you'll appreciate this....first official day of summer break and my kids are already complaining they have nothing to do!!

I've got weight training today, and that's it! I plan to go to bed early and get back on track with some sleep!

I had a swim coach once recruit my wife for training session of mine. The 2 of them swam in my lane and basically beat the snot out of me while I swam laps. Sounds unconventional, but it really taught me to focus on what I'm doing and ignore being hit/bumped/swum over/etc. in a race.

Been absent for a while with lots of work both around the house and at my office... It seems that the month of June has been a wash for me. I lost some focus and maybe some fitness in the process. However, I feel like I have regained some family value points by taking care of some major projects. Not only that, but I believe I was getting burned out by the training time (which is scary since I am only training around 7 hours a week).

I did get a very fast 50 mile ride in with our group on Saturday which was encouraging. I am planning a longer run of 10 miles on Thursday and see how I feel.

Time to refocus and get ready for July as I plan to use that month as a transition to a build up starting the first week of August (12 weeks from my race)

Seems like everyone is doing great...

There are 2 duathlons here on the same venue, one in the spring and another in the fall and they offer an F1 version which I have done several times.  I like to refer to it as transition practice as the format is run/bike/run/bike/run.  The thing with du's is you have to learn how to pace by doing bricks and after a couple you learn.  Since swimming is not my forte I enjoy an occasional du.  Unfortunately there are not many around here and most are short and I prefer the long course tri's most of all.

I am sure that I could get the old lady noodle club that starts after the morning lap session at the Y to beat on me with their noodles.  A couple of times I didn't end my swim early enough for them I thought they were going to do it without asking.

I am sure your wife probably did enjoy it, mine would!! Laughing

Thats what I need! - someone to beat on me while I start the swim. I managed to get through both my triathlons this year, but don't feel like I've "put it all together" yet. Partly due to the weather for the races this year, partly because I'm training (long rides) right up to the races since they aren't my A race, but the swim has been my nemesis this year. I get out of rhythm and that seems to extend throughout the race.

Anyway, I have a question for those that have done a full ironman. So far, I have just worn regular tri shorts for all my races (including the HIM), but my butt hurts on the bike. I'm wondering if others have worn padded shorts and if so, do you wear them during the swim and run too or do you change?

Hoping to get down to the IMWI bike loop again soon to practice the hills.

I haven't done a full but for my half I bought a pair of DeSoto 400 shorts. I think they have a little more padding then regular tri shorts - they rocked. I don't think doing a full in them would be out of the question. I know that a lot of people change in the tents though. It is going to be a long day might as well be comfortable.

Kids are in camp this week - yeah! So mountain biking followed by a trail run is on the agenda. Just hope I don't hurt myself (or run into a mama moose) as I am going solo.

I'm wondering if others have worn padded shorts and if so, do you wear them during the swim and run too or do you change?

Hoping to get down to the IMWI bike loop again soon to practice the hills.

Todd

I haven't done a full but for my half I bought a pair of DeSoto 400 shorts. I think they have a little more padding then regular tri shorts - they rocked. I don't think doing a full in them would be out of the question. I know that a lot of people change in the tents though. It is going to be a long day might as well be comfortable.

+1 on the DeSoto 400 mile. I haven't done full IM either, gut I use the 400 mile bib for HIM. No change, use it for the whole thing. Love them!

I did another OWS this morning, very consistent to Sunday's pace and significantly quicker than the pace in Florida last month.  I just need to get my head focused on swimming my way and not worrying about what is going on around me this Saturday.

What is on your training plans today?

I've got weight training today, and that's it! I plan to go to bed early and get back on track with some sleep! I had a swim coach once recruit my wife for training session of mine. The 2 of them swam in my lane and basically beat the snot out of me while I swam laps. Sounds unconventional, but it really taught me to focus on what I'm doing and ignore being hit/bumped/swum over/etc. in a race.

I am sure that I could get the old lady noodle club that starts after the morning lap session at the Y to beat on me with their noodles.  A couple of times I didn't end my swim early enough for them I thought they were going to do it without asking.

I am sure your wife probably did enjoy it, mine would!! Laughing

How about this kind of training for the swim start?

hahahahahaha!! Yeah...that would work! LOL I had my coach and wife swim along with me handing me the beating. I'm not sure the gladiator jousting sticks are necessary! LOL

Robin - if you keep posting pictures like that you just may have lots of unexpected company knocking on your door. The views are absolutely gorgeous! And I almost missed your question about my saddle. I got this Specialized saddle. http://www.specialized.com/us/en/ftb/saddles/roadmultisport-saddles... I didn't know if I would like it at first, because it is very different from what I had, but I still love it!!

I have a 5 mile run planned after work. It is finally summer here. The temperatures the past week have been close to 90. That was just such a sudden, and huge, change from the previous weather where we had days in June with a high of 60! I am having a bit of a problem adjusting, so we will see how the run goes.

Thanks everyone for your comments about my du. I feel better about it now that I've put a few days and LOT of calories in between then and now. I am still really sore, though. I guess I can't change the fact that I trained for a 6 mile run but did almost 10 in the race.

Awesome pics, Robin!

Great race, Jace! What a fantastic PR.

I am constantly battling against racing too much. It's just so much fun! My 2 training buddies get completely stressed out about races and don't ever seem to want to do them. To me, that's like being good all year and then not getting Christmas presents! I would race every week if I didn't have to work. But I do agree it affects your training, especially for longer events, so I'm trying to limit myself this year.
