Quick questions: what time is Saturday Masters, and where/when is your tri? Just realized I didn't answer the tri question. It's Rock Hall on June 4th. Less than 2 weeks to go! |

2127 Baltimore, Maryland | Subject: RE: Beer Drinkers Appreciation Society (BDAS) 2023 Mentor Group - ALWAYS OPEN Hey everyone! I had a really busy, but great weekend. Friday night, had an axe throwing tournament - just a small one that involved some skills, but it was really fun. Had football playoffs Saturday and WE WON! It was really awesome. It was this team's first time winning. Everyone played really well and did their part, it was a really fun day. We followed that up by going to our favorite post-game bar, and then there was a wine festival in the Inner Harbor (really touristy area in Baltimore) so we checked it out. Very fun day. Woke up Sunday and went on a trail run. Got about 7 miles in, but felt really good and probably could've kept going. I got there late, the rest of the group did closer to 11 I think, so I wish I would've tried that. Got in a 30 minute ride this morning. Gonna swim tonight since I didn't get to this weekend. We have late session for vball and my partner is out of town so I'm just going to skip. This is the last big week of training so aiming to get another swim in, a couple runs and bikes. My friend and I are also planning on going on a long outdoor bike ride this weekend so we can get on our bikes before the tri. I'm going to take White Lightning (that's my bike) to the LBS too to get a little checkup. It's been awhile. |

Regular 1781 Auckland, North Island | Subject: RE: Beer Drinkers Appreciation Society (BDAS) 2023 Mentor Group - ALWAYS OPE 60 minute Zwift ride to start the week, consisting of 6x2.5' @ 105%FTP intervals. Legs were dying by the end of that one. An hourish easy run planned for tonight. @Gretchen, Enjoy the nile view. No bike, plus 'sweat season' sounds like a good time for a rest week/taper for your 3 race weekend. @Mike, 13 hour week? Awesome job. @Nathalie, long work days plus long work 'events' in the evening also sounds like it's time for a break from training. @Nicole, congratulations on your football win. Sounds like you have a big week ahead. Hope it goes well. |

Member 3149 | Subject: RE: Beer Drinkers Appreciation Society (BDAS) 2023 Mentor Group - ALWAYS OPEN My bike is done!!!! I was so worried it wasn't going to be ready for race weekend, but it is. Last night, about 6pm, the mechanic sent me a photo of my bike and a copy of the bill. It was like a ransom note with proof-of-life attached! I'm having them transport my bike down to Somabay--so much easier than trying to disassemble, pack, fly with it, reassemble, and then reverse it all to come home. Grand total cost? $23USD, so I'd say that is well worth it!! Also, since I'm moving immediately after I get back, they will bring it to my new place, which solves the whole how am I going to transport the bike to the new place without disassembling, packing, assembling hassle. Super happy about this!! (and yes, I recognize the privilege I have in terms of being a "rich" foreigner here). Start lists came out for the races this weekend. The F40-44 AG are stacked!! All three races, that one AG is 30%+ of the total field. I am the only woman doing all three races this weekend. There are two others doing two races, but both only one race per day. I'm thinking about adding the 10K to Saturday morning just for funsies. I don't know that I can at this late date, but I'm probably going to ask. May not be smart, but it will be fun and kinda an epic story...and after all, isn't that why we do this? 10K starts at 7am and sprint starts at 9:00. There is time...we'll see! This morning was a 60' interval run, followed by 30' on the recumbent (so happy my bike is done and will be back with me soon!!). It was supposed to be a brick, but if I had done it in that order, it would have been 6:30 when I hit the roads for the run, meaning get home at 7:30. That's a good way to get hit by a car...or at the very least have a pretty miserable run. |

ETA: This is a major qualifier for Age Group Nationals being the Maryland State Championship, so it's a super-competitive event with almost 400 racers (so far) on each day. ETA2: Typo LOL. Expert 4930 Middle River, Maryland | Subject: RE: Beer Drinkers Appreciation Society (BDAS) 2023 Mentor Group - ALWAYS OPE @Gretchen: great news on your bike, and amazing how cheap it is there...wow After a much needed rest day yesterday, this morning was a vO2 max workout that was more like a VO-1.5-or-so-max as I cracked pretty badly on the 3rd and 4th 4 x 105% intervals. I think I'm not built for that pain at 6 AM, and I'm in a pretty big fatigue hole right now, too. Got in some good core work afterwards. Productive day. |

So who's going to win? Let the pre event smack talk begin Ahhh! I'm doing the sprint though, so different days (and distances obvi) I wanted to do the Oly, but it's my friend's first tri so she wanted to stick to the sprint. I wish they were at least the same day! Though definitely should be pretty big. I'm getting a bit nervous, but feeling really good with my training! Got in a swim last night, solid 2500 (the main set was a bunch of fast 50s (11 total), then 5 fast 100s, then 11 50s again). Practiced a little sighting too. Got in a run this morning, including stride repeats, which I did on a gradual incline. Gonna do a brick tomorrow or Thursday, and my friend and I are planning on getting out on our bikes sometime this weekend. Edited by nicole14e 2023-05-23 1:27 PM |

Member 3149 | Subject: RE: Beer Drinkers Appreciation Society (BDAS) 2023 Mentor Group - ALWAYS OPEN Made it to Somabay!! The resort is gorgeous (aren’t they always?). I had lunch down at the marina where the race will start. I scoped out a bit of the course, but since my bike doesn’t arrive until tomorrow, I didn’t go crazy. Went snorkeling this afternoon and y’all ain’t kidding about the buoyancy!! I didn’t have to do ANYTHING to stay afloat. Nothing. Nada. Just laid in the water face down and watched the fish…the ray…the sea turtle…the sea snake caused me to kick some to get away…the shark got me moving fast and back on the boat I do not care that it was a nurse shark. Nope. I’m outta there when things with fins show up! Overall had a blast today and it is all of 7:15p and I can barely keep my eyes open. |

Expert 4930 Middle River, Maryland | Subject: RE: Beer Drinkers Appreciation Society (BDAS) 2023 Mentor Group - ALWAYS OPEN Nice work snorkeling (yes, it counts!), Gretchen. OMG wait until you swim with whale sharks like they do in Cancun LOL. I've never seen then because we're not there during the migration season but they're huge. And totally harmless to humans (actual whales are more dangerous). Aren't sea turtles so cool? Got in a 40 min run session (sub-11 pace for the 3.5 miles in the middle, so it's now running dammit) with a just over 9 minute mile in there then some light strength work. Lunch was 1250 in the pool with a hard 500 in the middle (1:42 pace, so a little faster than Oly race pace). I'd be thrilled to anything close to that for 1500M (or for the run, for that matter...). Tomorrow will be about 75 minutes Z2 in aero positions adjusting to the risers I just put in this morning. I'll be a little less aero but way more comfortable and likely to stay in the position. Bay temperature about 5 miles from the race location is 67 degrees right now so hopefully it stays within a few degrees of that and we get wetsuit swims. Hope everyone besides Gretchen (we already know you're having a good time ) is having a good week! |

Regular 1781 Auckland, North Island | Subject: RE: Beer Drinkers Appreciation Society (BDAS) 2023 Mentor Group - ALWAYS OPEN Life got in the way of Tuesdays run, ended up doing 45 minutes before bed rather than the planned hour. Wednesday back on zwift for a 60 minute ride with 3x10' in the sweet spot. That one was a bit of a step up for me, my recent sweet spot workouts have been 4x5' intervals. Definitely got the legs working for this one. According to stravas power curve it was the highest average watts for an hour I've done all year, or all 2022 either for that matter. Making gains. Easy run tonight. Either 45 or 60 minutes depending how I feel. |

Regular 1781 Auckland, North Island | Subject: RE: Beer Drinkers Appreciation Society (BDAS) 2023 Mentor Group - ALWAYS OPEN @Mike, Great job on the run. It's definitely looking like pushing through the back complaint and doing the tri regardless was the right call. Good luck with the new position. I like the comfort over perfect aeroness plan, just hope that doing something different doesn't throw your back a curveball this close to race day. @Gretchen, The snorkling sounds cool. Definitely counts as OWS practice. Please don't tell us that you're also lying on the beach drinking rum based cocktails from a coconut... or I may explode with jealousy. $23 for a service? I couldn't get a pair of tubes for that, let alone someone putting them on the bike for me. @Nicole, nice job ticking the workouts off Finally, Mike and Nicole, the only option I see here is one, or both of you need to channel your inner Gretchen and do both races. It's only 2 on 2 days, that's rookie level stuff aye Gretchen? |

Took it for a short ride—one lap around the bike course. Found out they put a tire with dry rot on. It is back with the mechanics now. I’m getting nervous. |

I'm sure seeing as they're hosting a large multisport weekend the bike shops/mechanics in sombaby will be well equiped to sort it for you though. If its ever going to be well looked after in Egypt it's during a big event. |

Regular 1781 Auckland, North Island | Subject: RE: Beer Drinkers Appreciation Society (BDAS) 2023 Mentor Group - ALWAYS OPEN 45 minute easy run on the treadmill after dinner last night. Skipped this mornings swim as the kids didn't have a great night, and after some middle of the night parenting I had some sleep to catch up on. The plan is to sneak out for some lunch break laps during the day. Long ride on zwift, 1hr45 planned for this evening. And a long (90 min) run, and interval run planned for the weekend. Timeframe and order to be determined by the weather forecast Have a good weekend all. And good luck for your triple race mission Gretchen. |

A double is the only acceptable solution!! Unfortunately, my azz is going to be on an airplane headed to Aruba during the sprint. I guess it’s an acceptable reason not to do the sprint. So Nicole will have to do the oly too then… Hope you can get your bike sorted Gretchen. You seem to have found the rythm here Andrew, working around what life (kids) throw at you to do your workouts. Had a busy and fun week at work. Meetings / workshops all day and parties at night. I still manage to squeeze in some kind of workout every day. Monday I biked home after dinner and left my car there so I would be forced to bike back on the Tuesday (on my electric bike so not so much of a workout but still burning a few calories and getting some fresh air). Squeezed in a strength session after the meetings on Tuesday before dinner and a swim on Wednesday. Played golf with our guests yesterday. First time this year for me. Couldn’t hit the ball first 9 but played brilliantly on the back nine (5 bogeys -with a hcp of 26, a bogey is good stuff- 1 par and only one triple) Only had a couple of beers while playing and one on Monday, damp 2023 still going strong. Have a great weekend! Edited by Rollergirl 2023-05-26 3:43 AM |

PR the oly distance by 12:29…and that includes the issue with my bike seat tilting backwards for the last 20 miles (think slowly sliding off the rear of your bike), the 88…yes…88… speed bumps on the bike course, and the point where I was riding headlong into traffic because they let cars on the course without checking for cyclists. More to come later, but I have to go do the super sprint. Never done one of these, so it is a guaranteed PR! |

Won 2nd AG and 1St AG was 3rd overall, so I’m feeling pretty good about that race! One more in the morning, and I’m hella glad that I didn’t sign up to run the open 10K at 7, before the sprint tri at 9 (a thought I had this week!). Back at the hotel with feet propped up and a hot chocolate…because when it is 100F, you need hot chocolate! |
