I am on a plane to Indonesia tonight. I'll be checking in sporadically (oh, so no change, Yanti, duh) for the next three weeks, but I am racing this weekend in my home country! Yay!

Yay indeed!! I'm so happy you got a flight home, Yanti. And that's great news about the race! I know you won't have a lot of time, but please do check in when you can -- we'll all be eager to hear how things are going for you.

Suzy: I totally understand about the cronies. I've loved having friends at all of my races, but especially at my first one (or two), there were definitely times when I would've preferred to be on my own. You're probably wise to choose a race in the middle of nowhere -- at the very least, you won't end up with unfortunate photos of you in your wetsuit, from behind. (Yes, I have some of those from my last race. They are not pretty.)

Thanks Erin.

I am going up early the day before the race so I can see the venue and hit the water. I might try taking off and putting on the wet suit after its wet. There is a kids event before the main one starts so it could be a while before I actually get to swim.

Suzy, where is your race? and what time does it start?

A really small town outside of Appleton Wisconsin. The start is 8:15am, but I do know the kids go off first and have no idea how long that will take. I picked this race because of the swim distance and because I will know no one. I did not want the pressure of a bunch of my cronies the first time out.

heh - I can totally relate to  not wanting to know anyone, that's pretty much how my first race was, with the exception of the couple of people that did it with me that were in the same place as I was

anyway, the reason I asked was to see if I had any point of reference from which to offer advice - being from the midwest, I can at least share my observations (I've never actually worn a wetsuit in a race)

So, my thoughts/observations are this -

the tri starts early in the morning - if Wisconsin is anything like Minnesota (which I suspect it may be), it should still be fairly comfortable at 8:15 am -

You will be wet from the swim warm up, which will help keep you cool -

the kids will start and the time will fly by until your time is there

if you haven't practiced taking off and putting on a wet wetsuit, that could cause stress you hadn't planned on

I've done a few races in the midwest and I honestly haven't seen anyone take their wetsuit off in between the warm up and the race - the one that strikes me in particular is the Midwest meltdown.

there were 3 events, an Oly, a Sprint, and a Du

I did the Sprint and we had to wait until the Oly folks were on the bike out before we started - no one took their wetsuits off

it was in Kansas, in late August

anyway - you need to do what is comfortable for you, but hopefully this is some good food for thought

It's so funny you'd pick a race in the middle of nowhere ... it's kind of weird, but I totally get not having cronies around! (Then again, it's really nice to have someone to carry all that stuff, ha ha).

Wetsuits are actually easier to manipulate when wet ... if it gets hot, you can just peel off the top half and stand around like that. Erin's definitely right, try to get in the water before the race.

Wonderful RRs from Bunny and dear Beth, who went through so much to get to this tri-du-tri!

Beth, we are not STUCK with you. We are very lucky to be in your presence.

I've been offline a lot (thanks, kids) but thought I'd check in since I am up before them today.....it's finally nice here this week and that is helping my moods so much.   I am going to try to read some RRs and blogs before the kids wake up.  Cross your fingers.  In the meantime, hopefully everyone is out doing what you do best and enjoying it!

probably the more accurate question is

why, when we look at pictures of ourselves do we tend to see only the flaws and weaknesses and others see the beauty and the strengths?

hmmmmm..........

So I should post this link in CoJ? Hee.

First: Your bike photos look great! You look very strong and in charge (although I keep cracking up at the chick behind you with the green helmet that's all crooked on her head -- she looks like she's hurting, heh).

Second: What's up with the random mustache guy in the wetsuit photos? Oh, wait, are you random mustache guy???

Third: Not *all* of the run photos are terrible! *g* You do sometimes look a little like you're, I don't know, lifting invisible weights? Wanting to fall down? And maybe like you're not at your freshest. And not feeling particularly happy. But only in some of the photos! I really like the ones where you're pumping your arms in victory.

Sorry, but I love bad tri photos!

That is indeed the best question. It's so hard to see ourselves as others see us -- strong and confident and beautiful -- even when we have bad running form! Although I have plenty of photos that even my friends make fun of me about. When I get home tonight, I'll post my most recent wetsuit photo (hint: it was taken from behind).

THE OTHERS ARE LYING!Laughing

Totally kidding.  I think we already know things we hate about our appearance so we see those magnified in race photos, especially in spandex!  Those around us are willing to look at the total photo, not the grimace or other small imperfections we see.  I decided after Boston to buy every PR photo regardless of how I look.  I display it in a room in a frame with all the rest...I even have learned to love my thighs in some of them (after all they are strong and carry me great distances!).

How could you miss her??? She is killing me! You know what she reminds me of? Those kids in Little League games who have to wear batting helmets that are, like, eight sizes to big and keep flopping around on their heads. It looks so uncomfortable! And it even looks a little like she's got a baseball cap under there.

To be honest there were some points at the end of the run I wasn't all that happy, I wanted it to be over........

NO! Really??? Hee. I have a bunch of photos like that from my first tri in March. I *tried* to look for the photographer and put a smile on my face, but apparently I failed. A LOT. Either that or I was at the point in the race where I really, really didn't f-ing care.

I *love* the fist-pumping photos!

I think you look great, Beth!

The photos from my race on Sunday went up today as well. They only got one of me and it was right as I was crossing the finish line. At least they got me during the one part of the race where I actually ran! LOL Photo is attached below.

In other MAJOR news, my toe is feeling much better. So much so, that for the first time in YEARS, I actually jogged just over a half mile (0.54 mile) without any walk breaks! I was slow as hell (15:09 pace), but I did it!
