Hey All! I finally jumped back on and caught up with all the posts. Crazy busy cool stuff happening in here. The timing of Steve's posts and hearing so many testimonials of the struggles that come with changing a lifestyle is strangely encouraging. My week was also quit difficult and my training suffered as a result. If I consider the amount of time I invested in my health in the past I am 100% better. Here are my totals for May.

S:  May 16100.00 Yd vs. April 3300
B:  May 228.91 Mi vs. April 144.7
R:  May 51.50 Mi vs. April 38.63

The great news is I PR'd my 10k last weekend by finishing 6 minutes faster than last year. Plus, during the race I chased down a gal after the halfway point and because I passed her I ended up placing 1st in my age group (out of 3 :P).

James - go after all three. What a fun challenge and story to tell later. Your new profile pic is sweet!

Carol - you are so inspiring! I really hope you find a great bike and reap benefits from your investment. And definitely be sure your outfit and your bike match. It's all about looking good!

Larry - great job on your recent race! I am really looking forward to you completing the HIM. You are right about the comparison thing and I am so terrible about doing it too! yeah for mtn biking with the kids.

Elena - I like to make sure the calories I am taking in have protein in them. I don't think that makes as much of a difference to everyone as it does to me, but there is a powder you can put in your water called perpetuam and I really like it.

Joe - new shoes...awesome! Looking forward to the day I can move up to clipless pedals and look cool! And where are all the wildlife coming from in NJ. Watch out!

Ceril - I hope the best for you in your race this weekend! Slow or fast you are getting out there and like Larry said, you are doing 100% more than the people on the couch. Now if I can remind myself of that.

I will leave this week in the past and start again because every day is new and full of new mercies!

CKslowpoke - 2012-06-08 10:24 PM My husband is doing the duathlon - it would be cool to hopefully meet up on the bike but we shall see!

I also have my vacation coming up at the beginning of July (Hawaii!) so my other motivation for training is that bikini!

Hey Ceril, have fun tomorrow!  That is so cool your hubby is doing the duathlon.  You are a much more confident swimmer now, so I know you'll do fine on that.  And Hawaii....wooohooo!!!  Now there's something to look forward to!

Today was a very good day!  Had a nice tempo run this morning following my summer base plan (thanks again, Steve).  After that, bought not one, but TWO bikes.  The best part is, one is for my husband!  Stopped by the shop to see if I could get my top pick, and found that they had a 2011 in a 62 frame at a nice discount that fits him.  He is 6 ft 5, so finding a previous year's model in his size was a surprise and came w/ a nice discount!  So, he got the Trek Alpha 2.3 http://www.bikepedia.com/Quickbike/BikeSpecs.aspx?Year=2011&Brand=Trek&Model=2.3+Triple&Type=bike  , and I got the Trek Madone 4.5 and got my rental fees taken back off the price, which helped http://www.trekbikes.com/us/en/bikes/road/sport/madone_4_series/madone_4_5_wsd/#  Discounts on accessories, and tune ups for life, so we're happy campers.

Kerry got fitted and got to bring his home, and mine has been ordered and should arrive in about 1.5 weeks.  Test drove it at another shop where I could have gotten it immediatly, but have some very good reasons for going with the shop that I did.  Now, to look for that matching tri top!

Soooo....Ceril.....how was your race? (tapping fingers on desk)

Jford, know what you mean about the heat.  Some days it's easier to cope with it than others.  Guess we better both get used to it.

Short sluggish 3 mile run this morning between blood sugar issues and needing to get to church early.  Then this afternoon a short bike ride alongside my hubby on his new bike.  I dusted off my 2002 Gary Fisher Napa.  Did my first tri on it in 2009.  I think it's classified as a comfort bike.  Still rides pretty good....very cushy, and very heavy, but I kinda liked it!

Did I miss one of our group member's races?  What's this about 6 minutes??

Stunningly beautiful day here, and in between kids sports, church, family cook out, I *finally* put the new tires on the bike. A good refresher in changing tires as well. I managed to put one on backwards and had to redo it. Took the bike out for a shakedown cruise on the new tires and all was well. Felt more 'grippy' if thats a word that makes any sense. It just feels great to get out there and move, and feel the sun & breeze. A real joy, even though I was only out for 20 minutes. Rode by the beach, smelled the sea, other folks out running, riding, walking. A nice way to end the weekend, and start THE week I've been prepping for.

Earlier today was our family fun run, but we missed the 5k due to a playoff soccer game which just came up. We did manage to make the kids 1 mile fun run, and my 9 year old ran it. I did it with her and she managed a 10:07 mile, and was thrilled.  2 months ago in her phys ed class they made them do a mile and she was at 13:00. Her goal was sub 10, but so close!! Personally, I think she did it for the ice cream afterwards.

Easy week ahead -- just some short yardage swims at masters on M/W, a short easy run on Tusday, maybe a bit of bike Tu or W eve, then rest Th/F. Saturday we go. Weather is looking like mid 70's and partly cloudy.

HI!  I'm alive.  I finished the race, I wasn't DFL!  Haha.  My race report is up but I'm not savvy enough to link it here!

I still panicked on the swim after all, but I pushed through and finished the swim even though the guards on the kayaks kept coming up to me asking if I wanted to hold on.  But, I turned them down and pushed on.  Because of the panicking, I couldn't catch my breath to get into freestyle, so I ended up doing breast stroke and back stroke the whole way and sucking wind the whole time while trying to just breath and keep going.  At the end, I thought that I was going to puke so I took an extra few minutes in T1 to try not to puke.

I felt pretty great on the bike after the puking feeling passed and I was pretty happy with the 14.6mph average over the 15.2 miles.  I passed a couple people and didn't get passed but I was so far in the back of the pack, I don't think that there was anyone left to pass me!

During the run, my knee was bothering me and I ended up walking more that I had hoped, but still I was happy with it overall. (for me)

Overall, I was so happy to finish the race.  My husband ran the duathlon and got 3rd place in his age group, so he was pretty stoked.  We've already talked about doing the race again next year!

Woooohooo!!!! Great job Ceril (and Ceril's hubby)!  Very happy for you.  Persevering through that swim was a HUGE victory.  And VERY nice bike time.  If you think you're going to puke, you don't want to do it on your bike, so better to wait it out in T1 if you ask me.  You knocked the family myth on it's *$$ .  Way to go!

Ceril - so stoked for you. You made it through some major obstacles and came out the other side a real victor! Glad you didn't puke. Glad you felt free to take the swim the best way you could. Glad you are so pumped about your success. And your bike time is very good! Way to go!!! Yeah for the hubby too!

Carol - the 6 minute thing was about the 10k race I did last weekend. I PR'd and beat last years time by 6 minutes. I am pretty stoked about it! Yeah for TWO new bikes! I'll expect a photo of you in your new matching tri top on your sweet new bike.

James - We keeping waiting for the heat here in Idaho. Unusual amount of rain and quite cold. I don't want the heat, but I sure would like to see the sun.

Mike - reading about your day made mine a little brighter. Sounds wonderful! Congrats to your little girlie on her race. Sounds like you are as ready as you can be for the big day. Sure can't wait to hear how it goes.

I had a great short run today. I am feeling stronger and pushed myself pretty hard and did 3.2m at a 10:17 pace, and this was after my 12 mile bike. Really good for me. Back to swimming tomorrow and hoping the shoulder will be back to good. Happy Monday!

This morning was a beautiful 50F for my run before church.  After struggling with fatigue all week, todays run was very nice.  Here are the mile times: 7:53, 7:23, 7:24, 7:26, 7:42, 7:40, 7:42, 7:44, 8:03 (had my Gu this mile), 7:51, 7:45, 7:23, 7:11.  Strongest run of the year over 5 miles.  Very happy with that. A couple of very long weeks coming up in my build though.  This week was very lite.

Glad to hear all the stuff going on.  With the swim and panic you might just want to start with breaststroke until you settle in and then try some freestyle after a couple hundred yards to make you feel more comfortable.  Just start back and outside don't focus on speed at all, just comfort.

Ceril, after not finishing the swim last time, what a great milestone finishing it this time.  That is huge!!!  Samantha, great run.  Steve, your mile splits sound like my half mile splits.  This past week has been solid for me.  It was a recovery week.  No record times or distances, but no illness or injury.  I am feeling recovered, and am ready to stare down the 2 biggest weeks of training.

Samantha -- Awesome on your 10K!  Seems like I recall that running has been your nemesis?  And there you go scoring a 6 minute PR and taking 1st place in your AG.  What a great feeling!  Nice brick as well.

Mike -- very cool re: your 9 year old's 10:07 pace.  And don't we all do it for the ice cream ?  It's good to smell the roses (or sea breeze) along the way.  And I give up...how is it possible to put tires on backwards?

Quasi -- solid is good, and sounds like you are ready for your big build!

Steve -- very nice run!  Sounds like you just might be all the way back from those nagging injuries.

Attacking the yard work this morning in the cool of the day and then planning a swim later.  Still working on swim options to see if changing pools (chlorine vs. bromine) will be better for not making my sinuses close up later in the day.

The 'tire on backwards' thing -- the new tires have an arrow on the sidewall to indicate direction the tread should face. I put the tire on the first time such that the wheel would be turning the opposite way it has been the past year and a half. I probably am overthinking it, but I wanted to keep the hub going the same direction, so I removed the tire, and put it on the other way. If anything it was good to work on tire changing, and reorienting myself w/ the CO2 cartridges.

Short swim thia AM (1300 yds) and took it easy. Plan to do so the remainder of the week. Friday  afternoon I pack up and head to the hotel I'm staying at Friday night. Go to the race site for packet pick up, then meet a bunch of BT'ers for dinner. That should be great!! Race starts at 7 on Saturday, but my swim wave is 2nd to last, so I'm in the water about 7:30. Weather is looking like sunny & low 70's, with no wind. Could get warm .

Ceril- great job on your race. I remember my first Olympic swim, I struggled even more than what it sounds like you did!  It does get easier and better and more fun!  I love the swim portion of the race now!

sometimes I hate trying to read a training plan. My run tomorrow, a section of the workout calls for a 9 minutes, totalling 1 mile and it should be 6x .05 on 1 min rest.

i am a stickler (or try to be) when it comes to a plan, but I have no idea sometimes on how to figure out what pace I am suppose to be running. 6 30 secs sprints with a 1 min rest in between for 1 mile to be done in 9 minutes? I am not a math major!!!

Hey guys, great to see everyone's training is going so well! My training is going great! Had a really good week of running last week followed up with a 105 mile ride yesterday! I've got about 4 more weeks of training before tapering so trying to keep it going strong.

I get a lot of inspiration reading all of your posts and sorry I don't reply more, crazy time of year for me right now and the kids are out of school so I am limited to my iphone to stay updated!

105 is a solid bike ride.  Hope you are getting some hills in there 8).

Todays workout for me was a 2000 yard swim in 500 sets at a 1:57, 1:53 and 150 pace.  Then a 25 mile bike around 19.4 mph ish bump set spedo off for a bit and then a 6 mile run increasing in pace each mile : 9:18, 8:32, 8:26, 8:19, 8:01, 7:21

A lot of us are closing in on some big races.  Keep strong you are almost there.

When running rest can mean jog. So 30 second at 5k pace jog 1 minute rince repeat x6 as part of a 9 minute mile.

well, 4 days until it all happens. can't wait. Looks like a sunny day in the low 70's temp wise.

Went out this AM and did an easy, short bike & run to keep the legs moving. Still takes me a mile+ to get the legs feeling normal off the bike, even after a bunch of bricks - guess you just get used to it.

For an interesting bit of perspective on the HIM, the 'easy/short' bike/run I did this AM was about 75% of the distance of my local sprint tri I'll be doing the week after the HIM. First time I did that race, it seemed so long, now its an 'easy/short' bike & run. .

Pre-race hydration question -- I assume it may be in my best interest to increase fluid intake the days leading up to the race? By how much?
