Really proud of my run today.  20+km--ran to my moms house to let her dog out for her, then ran home.  A 2km hill (3.4% grade) at km 4, then a 2.5km hill (2.5% grade) at km 16.  Left brain kept telling me it was ok to stop and walk, but I kept running.  I was thinking about Tracy and her IM run and just kept going.  The last km and a bit are the last km and a bit of my race in two weeks, so I just imagined the finish line .

I have a super fun day with my kidlets yesterday--took my niece and nephews to a country fair with a ferris wheel and everything.  What a riot.  Got some great video of my niece on the ferris wheel--she is 5 and she was just smiling from ear to ear.  So fun.  They got to dress up as animals and be in a 'parade' too, and try out stilts.  Good times!

Ah ha! Finally some return on investment! Keep on keepin on and runs like these will be more frequent. Did you get some video of the stilts???

Yeah, I was thinking about that on the run, maybe there is something to that whole 'hard work and consistency' thing.  No video of stilts, but pics for sure!  I tell ya, there is nothing like hanging out with kids to remind you how to enjoy the simple things.

me too my run came together today - decided to do a bit more running a bit less walking as it was a 30minute planned run.  So I did 5:1 which was hard on my legs coz I'm not used to it but my average speed was way faster and I was doing 6.10 min k's so very happy with that coz my average is usually 7.....

Spoke to bike coach - I'm so excited, an hour one on one training - yay!  Watch out Bradley Wiggins!

My kid finished the bike in 2:50 and the run in 1:34!!!! This is the 21 year old who decided about 6 weeks ago to do a HIM. This is his first Tri!!!!

TJ, do we get a RR from your son? 6 weeks of training and he is turning in that kind of time, he may be onto something. I hope all is well and that he is recovering well.

I'm having a bad day - took my bike to the track got attacked by giant swooping magpie and came home after ten minutes.  Yes the bike has been outside only briefly.  Yes I did unclip and stop twice without incident.  Still needs work though.  I need to find a carpark to practice where no boy racers are hooning around!

Upshot of it all is - I am not a natural rider.  I don't think I'll ever be confident to ride in aero so taking those bars off - managed HIM in normal positiion - and in the TdF they go all day with no aero bars!

Yikes!  The Birds!  You don't need the aero bars at this time.  Good move!  At IM distance, comfort is very important.

The Birds

I have to face it so decision right now is - bulk of hours and T.I.T.S will be on the drainer working hard.  Then at the weekend I  will get out on the quiet roads for an hour or so Saturday and Sunday - just to keep the balance and road handling together, practicing drinking and eating etc.  to avoid having to take hands off handlebars too much am investing in a camelpak - with that and two bottles I think I will make it through the IM bike section unless it's a scorching hot day - unlikely in March.

All of this makes very good sense.  The trainer is very time efficient but you do needs some road handling as well.

This is going to sound like a weird suggestion but... do you know anyone on you swim squad that is also a roadie?  Do you think that they might have a set of wheels that you can borrow?  I had some balance issues on my bike for years.  I got a set of Mavic Kysrium SL wheels and it changed my life.  I thought that I was just klutzy and would never be able to drink from a water bottle at 20 mph.  How do other people do that?!  I spent years getting away with drinking only at stop signs and signal lights.  Clearly not the best plan.  Anyway once I got these wheels, voila!  I could instantly drink at 20mph like the cool kids!  Now, wheels are not inexpensive an you'd definitely want to see if a different set of wheels helps before making an investment but it may be worth pursuing.

My Madone came with Bontrager Race wheels.  I left a cassette on the rear wheel and put a trainer tire on it and I change wheels when I bring her indoors these days.

KansasMom - 2012-09-15 2:30 PM I loved my trail race. It was the most fun I have ever had in a race. 2nd in my age group (out of six women, I think). The water crossings were crazy. Two were ankle deep; a third was thigh deep; the last two were at or above my waist -- and long 30-40 meters. It was crazy.  I had to walk up the more technical inclines -- real hiking/climbing. But I tried to run up the single track climbs -- when I could get around the person in front of me. Sometimes it just wasn't possible to pass. Race report after my nap. :-)

Awesome!  Congratulations on the placement and the crazy water crossings and being strong enough to mention that it wasn't possible to pass at some points on the single track.  Sometimes crazy can be a blast!

Googled around a bit yesterday, going to book me some one on one sessions with a bike coach then join his/her group for weekend rides, that's what I need - confidence boosting.

Good plan!

And your friends are right, you are really on track for IM Melbourne.  You will rock it!

Hi Pod!!  Here for some reading pleasure is my RR Kiawah Triathlon.  Overall I had a good race just missed out on my sub 3 hour goal by just over 2 minutes but shaved 8 minutes off my time from last year.  Rest day today and clean up from Sunday Funday yesterday, had some people over and fried up a turkey, always delicious.  Then into my HIM training starting tomorrow and my required 5 am wake up to get myself to get some quality training time in.  Reading some RR's now.

Jo you might want to look at 25 cc tires as well for training, I used them for the PUT in May and the extra stability is worth the marginally more rolling resistence, it's a thought as well

rrrunner - 2012-09-15 12:56 PM Update. He is texting from the bike, not transition. I find this amusing and very characteristic of my life-filled son.

I'm glad he's texting from transition and not from the bike.  It cracks me up that he is taking the time to do it.

I actually downloaded that yesterday and am well on my way through the book. I have been highlighting away.

Although perhaps a little dark  this quote was extremely close to my heart, "Running allowed me to control the storm. It gave me a release for the anger and frustration living inside me. When I ran, I was able to let loose the fury until I was so exhausted I could feel calm."

Howdy, howdy Manatees ... been trying to keep up with all the crazy Manatee busyness and if anyone feels ignored, SPEAK UP so I can clap my flippers for you, too!

Been busy myself, my dear beloved piglet Jim is visiting from LA and will be here until Christmas, so I am actually getting out and about as I feel able. He comes along on runs, which is really nice, although it's a bit disheartening that he's so tall, he just walks along at what is my "run" pace. Ha ha!

My booby/bikini-shape rash is finally calming down a bit (more than a week later); it's still itchy from the scabs healing up but not too badly.

For some reason I have been feeling ridiculously apathetic lately. Everything's fine; I just don't care about anything and don't want to do anything, but I do it anyway. Just life; it has its waves.

Oh heeeey!

Me! Me! Me! I'm neglected!!! Only cuz I'm a needy batch though Wink

Glad things are going well and I miss you!

Well, you ARE that crazy, but it has nothing to do with the races

You have time to build up to a March mary.

Even with several weeks' recovery after that, plenty of time to train for the HIM (including cross-training until March, then dedicated tri, mostly bike, thereafter). The question is whether you have the time and inclination? Will hubs be okay watching Baby E a lot more then?
