Another day with 97% humidity ...good times! 1hr ride with 30 min run. Hoping to try out a yoga class tonight ..anyone else do yoga? Looking for some good stretching that hits all the places I tend to miss.

X2 on Desoto - I don't have the 400 mile shorts, but have been using the 3 pocket Forza shorts this season and really love them. Very light weight yet have some nice compression to them. Padding is a personally choice - I don't like a lot of padding, I find I chafe more with regular biking shorts as oppose to Tri shorts.

Originally posted by trei Thats what I need! - someone to beat on me while I start the swim. I managed to get through both my triathlons this year, but don't feel like I've "put it all together" yet. Partly due to the weather for the races this year, partly because I'm training (long rides) right up to the races since they aren't my A race, but the swim has been my nemesis this year. I get out of rhythm and that seems to extend throughout the race. Anyway, I have a question for those that have done a full ironman. So far, I have just worn regular tri shorts for all my races (including the HIM), but my butt hurts on the bike. I'm wondering if others have worn padded shorts and if so, do you wear them during the swim and run too or do you change? Hoping to get down to the IMWI bike loop again soon to practice the hills. Todd

I have used LG tri top and shorts for my races the last couple of years, I was thinking of ordering a new one in the near future.  I don't change for the run, but I know plenty that do.  I think most people that wear the heavier padded bike shorts generally wear a swim jammer for the swim and change for the bike and then change again for the run.  I think that is a personal preference and if you are chasing a Kona slot or in a HIM a Vegas slot, you may not want to give up the seconds to change, but for most of us, changing doesn't make or break our races.

The last race in FL I did change from the tri top to a tech shirt with UV protection just because the sun was so bright.

This isn't for everyone, but I do most of my trainer rides, anything under 2 hours, in running shorts without padding.  I think it has "toughened" up the sit area some so I don't have as much trouble with the long rides.  I have doing that since I bought the trainer.

45 minute ride in full race trim with a 3 mile brick run.  Taking advantage of the taper to get a little extra sleep this week so feeling pretty good and ready to race this weekend.

Everyone else having a good week?

Did another run in the heat yesterday--only because I was lazy in the morning and didn't get up to run. The hot run went better than my disaster of a run in the heat last week, but it unfortunately depleted my energy for the masters swim which followed the run. So I struggled a lot in the swim. Another reason to run in the morning so I can get a quality interval run in and not suffer in the swim. Rest day today! Normally Monday has been my rest day, but the afternoon thunderstorms here have been screwing up my training schedule, so I'm going to start getting in some training on Mondays--that way if Monday is rained out, I always have Wednesday as a second chance.

I have a somewhat silly question--this year is the first that I've trained with a heart rate monitor. I have gotten used to what my zone 2 feels like on the bike and run, which I think is where I'll want to be for most of the IM bike and run. But until recently I hadn't thought about actually wearing my heart rate monitor in the IM.

So here are two questions:
1. Should I wear the monitor? I'm thinking I should, mostly for the run, to make sure I don't go out to fast in the first half.
2. If I do, what do I do about it in the swim? (This is the silly question.) Do I wear the strap and just attach the actual monitor in T1? Or can I wear the whole thing in the swim? And should I practice swimming with the strap, since it might be a source of chafing?

Thanks!

I have always worn the strap for the entire race.  I have a Garmin 910 so my bigger problem is getting the wetsuit sleeves over the watch part.  I haven't ever had a problem with the strap causing chaffing.  But, it sure wouldn't hurt to swim in it a few times to make sure.

I guess as far as whether to use it at all for the race or not, I guess the answer is it depends.  It depends on whether you feel you would use what you are seeing to change your pace if the HR indicated you should.  Or if you want to have the data for later analysis, assuming you want to do the IM again.

Nice work in the heat!

My run in the heat and humidity was cut short to only 4 miles last night. And, let me tell you those were some of the slowest and hardest miles!! I usually love the heat, but even I thought that it was a bit extreme. I am supposed to do a 2 hour ride tonight. I usually do hills on Wednesdays, but I think tonight I will just do some flat (and hopefully fast) loops nearby. Also, there are still thunderstorms in the area and that way I won't be too far from my car if it starts thundering and lightening!
My shoulder has been bothering me lately and I mentioned it to my Dr. last night. He made me feel old!! He said I have a very tight pec and some bursitis in my shoulder! I don't know why, but that just makes me feel old!
Hope everyone is having a good week!

So far yes...avg'd a hilly ride last night of 17+ mph. Dang!!! I didn't even go that hard either! This weekend, I'm spending quality time with the trainer as we are having excessive heat warning...114 to 117 degrees....yeah, I'm staying indoors snacking on ice pops!!

I have a new least favorite sport its called mountain bike pushing and it may be even worse than aquajogging!

Seriously, the last 2 days of mountain biking have been awesome (except for the mosquito swarms and cobwebs), but definitely lost a lot of nerve over the last couple of years and am super tired today. Going back out on Friday with hubby maybe I will see some improvement.

Short run on the schedule for tomorrow.

I didn't know if I would like it at first, because it is very different from what I had, but I still love it!!

I have a 5 mile run planned after work. It is finally summer here. The temperatures the past week have been close to 90. That was just such a sudden, and huge, change from the previous weather where we had days in June with a high of 60! I am having a bit of a problem adjusting, so we will see how the run goes.

Everyone should definitely put AK on their bucket list - This entire month has been amazing so maybe you should visit in June! Though if we don't get rain soon fires will become a very big problem. Thanks for the info on the saddle, I will have to write it down - not quite ready to give up on my Adamo yet (or more like I can't afford to buy a new saddle!).

I think some of the problem this week is the sudden switch from cool and wet to hot and humid.  This past weekend I was struggling and everyday it has gotten a bit easier to deal with.

Best wishes with the shoulder, I know the frustration!

Yikes!  That is a bit toasty!  The trainer does nothing but help!!

Nice ride in the hills DJ!!

I imagine from the pictures you post that there is plenty of opportunities to push the MB!!!  I'll stick to the roads!

Nice that you get the chance to go out and play in the mountains!  Have a great run!!

Have a great race Ken! I'm racing in the HITS Hague (Lake George) half distance on Saturday. Been tapering in crappy hotel gyms the last couple of mornings. It crossed my mind (only for a minute) that since this isn't a "goal race" I should just train through it and do more hill running, etc.. Luckily reality set in and I realized you can take that concept too far. I am in no shape to survive a long race, let alone do decently without giving it some attention and rest.

I have some bike maintenance to take care of, and that leads me to Bill's-tip-of-the-week - Don't use your tubular race wheels on the trainer! but everyone else probably knew that already. After last weekend's Du I realized my rear tire was shredded across 2-3 inches. Luckily the reinforced material under the rubber held during the race. For the last 3 months I've been riding those wheels on the trainer because I was too lazy to switch them out for races. It's not just the wheel, but adjusting the rear derailer for different cassettes and all that jazz. With tubular's I not only wasted a $100+ tire, but the wheel is out of commission for days, at a minimum to glue on a new tire. I'm going to take this opportunity to check out options for a new wheelset. So, a question for those of you who like to customize - if you were building a new 90mm deep wheelset, what hubs would you use?

Not much of an expert on wheel hubs, I have always used the ones that came with them or a PT when I was using that product for power.

Do they make tubular trainer tires?  I didn't know it took that long to replace the tire.

My plan this week has been short but higher intensity with only tomorrow off for the Saturday race.  If that helps with an idea how to train this week.

Look for the Peasantman guys at your race expo, they posted on FB that they were going to be there and at Tinman.

No, not tubular trainers. I have a kinetic training clincher on my stock wheels. So if I ride the trainer, I should be switching out the whole wheel, not the tire. It takes a long time to replace the tire securely because you have do a couple of thin layers of glue and let them each dry a little overnight. Also, removing the old glue is a bit of a chore too. I actually like doing it, and want to get better at it, but short on time, as usual.

I'll keep an eye out for the Peasantman team on race morning. I'm showing up race morning since my hotel is en-route to the race, so I'll generally miss the expo.

Robin......If you're booking visitors, I can have my MTB ready to go in a flash! Where's the nearest hospital to you! LOL

DJ.....great job in the heat! I'll be out there in September this year. It's been a while for us. We are usually out there more.

Bill.....shame on you man! lol Get yourself an old wheel you can put a trainer tire on, or do what I did and buy a whole nother bike that stays on the trainer! LOL I'm lazy too!!! Personally, I don't see the need for tubulars. Rolling resistance is soooooooo close to a good set of clincher tires with latex tubes and a lot of the wheel companies seem to be building the clinchers with the aerodynamics of how tires butt up to the rims. I guess tubies are great for short races where you are out of them anyway if you flat. But, clinchers are just way to conveinient and have come too far recently to ignore. I don't think I'd go tubular unless I was a sponsored pro. (which will never happen!) For hubs, I'd probably go with a nice set of Chris King hubs if I was custom building something, cost being no issue. That said, the manufactures build the high end wheels with good stuff. There is little difference between what comes with high end wheels and custom stuff. Especially for the cost.

I threw out my back early this week. So the saga continues here for me! Trying to stay positive as it seems to be healing quickly, and I'm pretty sure I'll be back on the bike this weekend, if not sooner.

Sorry about the back Brian.. stay positive and get back slowly...

Thanks for the info on wheels. The Chris Kings look nice. I'll talk to my shop about building up. I feel like you can really get a bargain building wheels (where I wouldn't do that with a bike at this point). If I get some of those nice R45 hubs and off-brand rims I think I'll end up with a decent set at 1/3 of the cost of some Zipp 808 firecrest wheels. They may not be quite as good/light, but I have to draw the line somewhere, and the line for bicycle wheels is definitely crossed if I pay more than I did for my truck.

I really don't go with tubies for rolling resistance, but partially so that I CAN change one during a race. I know it's not conventional thinking but I don't have great results with tubes in clinchers. Whatever caused the first flat may well cause another so the spare tube might not help me. Also, I'm a klutz and I pinch flat or dont seat tubes right often. Also, clinchers can be a PIA when it comes to messing with levers to get everything back on under the pressure of a race. I like the idea of ripping off the old tire and throwing on a spare, then deal with mounting a new permanent tire in the comfort of my living room. Tomorrow I'm going to try to go out on my flat and simulate a race-day change. I'll let you know how it goes....

If anyone has an interest in an IM Mt Treblant entry on 8/18, Carla has one that is transferable that she cant use.  Send her a PM, she may post this herself later, or PM me and I will forward it to her.

Can anyone tell me how to get the stickiness from adhesive race numbers off of a carbon frame bike? I don't want to use anything that might ruin the paint/carbon/etc....

BTW - deet (Ibug spray) on bike shorts is bad! I think I might of ruined a pair

Good question Robin! I was told once what to use but I forgot.

Sorry that I have been MIA. We have been fostering a dog who we know have officially adopted. He has had some medical issues and my other dog has also been sick so it has been a bit crazy juggling it all.

I have been experimenting with a new approach to running. I have been a bit resistant to the run/walk method though my runs ultimately turn into death marches most of the time (Running is a huge weakness for me and I struggle a lot with it). I have tried different run walk intervals on occasion but never really stuck to it. Over the weekend I ran into a friend who is also a coach and she suggested I do 2/1 intervals. She said that she has known people who struggle with running have success with that combination. I figured "why not" and gave a shot over the weekend while doing a long run on the treadmill. I then did it the other evening during a six mile run outside. I had two runs to do today (five miles in the morning and seven tonight) and again I used the 2/1 combo. It really seems to be working for me. My running intervals are much faster and my overall time is better. I also don't feel as bad as I usually do and mentally, it helps to know that after two minutes I can walk. I know that 2/1 seems really short on the running side but it works for me. Keeping my fingers crossed!
Hope everyone is doing well!

I try to use a citrus based cleaner, the citric acid will usually cut through the glue.  Just rinse it good afterwards.  I use Finish Line bike cleaning products and that gets most gunk off.  Between the gels and sports drink the bike winds up pretty sticky after races and even training rides.

Congrats on the new family member Kathleen!  I saw from your FB posts that you had been caring for the little fella!

Glad to hear that you have found something that will help your running!  I know a lot of people that have used that or a different ratio very successfully!

Heading up shortly to Tupper Lake for the race tomorrow.  I think it is about a 6 hour drive.  We are camping and I am sure glad that we have the RV since it is raining.  Tent camping could be a bit damp this weekend!! I hope it stops at least long enough for the race tomorrow.

Not sure about internet, but I am guessing it will be limited at best.

Good luck to everyone racing this weekend!

BTW - deet (Ibug spray) on bike shorts is bad! I think I might of ruined a pair

Windex or pledge works as far as household products go. For REALLY tough adhesive you can soak on some WD-40. Should take it right off.
