So is this different on the run? I know our bodies can handle alot more on the bike, but I remember that when I did my marathons it seems like my taking in only sports drink seemed to upset my stomach and cause alot of GI stress. Is there a switch on the run to what you SHOULD be taking?

Made an appointment for Wed to get properly fitted on my bike.  Figured it was time with my next tri having a 40K bike and the longest so far has been 13 mi.

This recovery stuff is for the birds.

My baby girl Reagan turns six today. Wow so grown up. We narrowly averted a crisis by finding her American Girl dress to wear to school today so she can "Look extra pretty on her birthday."

Ear rings, worried about looking pretty for school, where'd my baby go????

To quote a country song "You're going to miss this..." each step along the way enjoy it because you will miss it. My girl is 12 now and it only gets worse. I am waiting for the fight of "I hate you dad!" I hope to be a rock start dad and that never happen though haha.

Second that - my older is now 11 and I miss the 6 year old. Heck, my younger is 8 and I miss the 6 year old.

Hey Kristen mine are exact same age! (well my girl's 11 th bday is in a week). Scott your kids are adorable from the pics.

GI distress (either on the bike or run) in generally caused by stress -- either the stress of over exertion or heat stress. If you are pushing too hard or are too hot, your body is going to divert blood away from the GI system to the peripheral parts of the body to either cool the body or to provide enough blood for the level of exertion. The only way to combat this is to slow down.

On a race like a 5K - 10K - Sprint or even HM or Oly you can push really hard because your body doesn't need a lot of fluids, CHO and sodium so if you crash your GI system it doesn't really matter. In longer events you need to pace so that your body can take in the fluids, CHO and sodium it needs. A lot of times what happens in longer races is that you pace too hard (or don't pace) the first few miles or the bike, crash your GI system and then are dealing with bloating, sloshy stomach and the inability to take anything in on the run in the case of a tri or in the middle or later parts of the run in the case of a marathon.

When it comes to fueling for longer events, pacing is just as important as what you're taking in.

With regard to what you should take in, because the run is high intensity than the bike (for the same effort your HR is often 10 bpm higher on the run than on the bike) you want to provide you body with a steady stream of CHO, fluid and sodium in an easily digestible package. I use (and I recommend) using sports drink and some kind of chew (chews over gels because you can take chews in a smaller calorie packages compared to a 100 calorie gel).

Thanks for the nutrition info. I too, feel like I need it spelled out for me. I understand its trial and error, but having an idea of where to start is great. I really like the idea of rice and honey.

So I'm in Lake Placid and was hoping for a revenge ride to make up for last weeks fiasco. Instead..... It's snowing/ raining/ sleeting with a temp in the upper 30's and windy.

So I do like the idea of Oilman, Houston Marathon (or a mary in the general time frame since there are 3), NOLA 70.3, IMFL.

So I had a 10 mile run race today, PR so am happy with that. I carried perform in a bottle and took gu gels since they had that on course. I had some stomach discomfort around mile 8, then went away and my stomach has been unhappy since. I ran the first 5-6 comfortably hard, knew I was below my PR pacing so decided at 7-8 to push it a bit. Weather perfect at 50 degrees overcast. Need to keep testing a bit I think and try blocks again.... Maybe it's the calorie overload. I like the gels cuz they are easier .... What is the digesting rate of gels vs. blocks? Similar? Gels a little faster?

Sorry you had the GI issues (wish I knew enough about this to be helpful), but congrats on the PR!

Congrats on the PR, Carrie!

I'm loving all the nutritional info - thanks!

I had an OWS meltdown on Friday night...I'm up to 1 fail, 2 OK's, and another fail for my 4 outings this year. Everyone says that the current in our area dies down during the summer, but right now it's been pretty wild. It took my hubby 30 minutes to go upriver and 7 to go down - I on the other hand could not even get past the start dock. I have a long time until my race, but I know it will be here before I know it (plus I have 2 OWS tri warm-ups in July...an oly and a sprint) - I need to get over this. I think, if the current weren't so bad, I'd be fine...but I'm not in charge of the current. So...
