That's cool on the raffle win. I've never swam with music and not sure if I'd want to really. I find the sound of my breathing and the water and everything else kind of relaxing. Well, as relaxing as it can be as I'm running myself into the ground/water, but yeah, relaxing.

I'm psyched to step back into all THREE disciplines this week now that the bike Tour is over. Plan on getting some good swims and runs in this week.

I made it through the Kaiser Permanente Half Marathon today in San Francisco. Of course, today was the day that the rain, wind, and cold (42 degrees -- brrrr) finally made an appearance in the Bay Area. I still managed to finish in 1:44:55, which clipped more than 6 minutes off my PB. Overall, I was happy. Pacing was a little difficult because of the hills and the wind. Also, I haven't run in the rain in more than a year -- I know, poor me.  Anyway, I'll post my race report soon. Hope everybody had a great weekend!

Steve...Great job on the PR! Sorry you had to endure something as terrible as rain and 42 degrees. Haha...my feet haven't touched pavement in weeks, just snow and ice, but I feel for you.

Weigh in this morning: 188
February Goal: 175 (without robbing too much nutrition from my workouts)

Have a great day everyone!

Chris

Woo-Hoo, the Seahawks won!!!  For me, it's the second best thing to the Packers taking the win.  Love me some Russell Wilson, former Badger and all around clean cut guy.

Randee-that photo is nuts!  WOW.  Glad you enjoyed yourself!

Weigh in day--106.4lbs, not quite a new high for me, but darn close.  Ugh.  If I hit 103lbs before we leave for Hawaii on 3/5, I'll be happy.  Key for me will be to limit snacking.  While my diet is mostly healthy, I'm a perpetual eater.

My January...very solid training month for me:

Swim: 4h 30m - 10170.6 Yd
Bike: 12h 39m 14s - 227.93 Mi
Run: 11h 23m 22s - 69.57 Mi
Strength: 17h 42m (about 12 hours of this are my Bikram Yoga sessions)
Incline Treadmill Walking: 60m

I always weigh myself going into my recovery weeks, which works out that it's around the first of the month.
Current weight = 200 lbs.
Target race weight = 192 lbs.

If I could stop drinking beer and eating burgers, I'd probably be around 185.

I don't want to be the odd man out, but I'm not sure I want to do the weigh-in. I don't really worry about my weight; I'm pretty happy with where I am now. Also, I think I would only want to do it if I could calculate body fat%, bc otherwise I might gain weight from muscle and feel bad that I got heavier. Does anyone else out there not weigh themselves everyday?

I don't weigh myself every day, but I know I could lose a few lbs. Oddly I weighed myself this morning and it was 235.8. Last year I was at 250. I'm 6'6" and not built like a triathlete haha. Realistically with my body type I don't think I could get below 220 ever without losing a limb. I'm guessing I'll be in the 220's come June, but it's not something I'm killing myself over. I eat healthy and often, the # is not a means to an end for me.

Jamie, I weigh every day to track hydration. I also weigh before and after runs in the summer months as a way to know how much fluid to add back in. That is really the only reason that I weigh every day.

I've considered doing the same, but how do you account for intake. Do you always know how much fluid you consumed during a workout, or do you just go on an estimate in your head? I usually bring a 21oz bottle of water with me on long runs, but on the bike, I'm sipping from my aero bottle and supplementing with water from two other bottles, so it's hard for me to nail down what I consumed. If you have a good system, I'd love to hear it!

I have been on the scale 3-4 times in the last year. Weight is not really my metric although it can be very interesting to see my weight at the end of a really hard month or during the build to a big race. More important to me is how I look and how I feel.

I was telling Rene about how much I was eating and how I felt like I should be getting fat with all of the consumption. Then I caught a glimpse in the mirror and realized that I was leaner (by the eye test) than a month ago. I guess all of the training is burning through the calories being consumed.

My wife will often notice that I am getting lean because my face gets really thin. A couple years ago I got to the "slowtwitch approved" level of weight loss where people at work were asking if I was sick. That was at around 142 pounds which was a little too thin. I "think" I race best in the 145-48 range and probably weigh close to 150 right now if I had to guess, but really don't know. Maybe I will weigh in tomorrow after the AM swim and post up.

Nice job Steve, way to get it done!

Weighed in at 180 lbs. this a.m.. No wonder why my calves were screaming. My goal is to be in the low 160's for race season. I only get on the scale once a week. Apparently when I shut the running down with my knee a month ago I forgot to back off on the calorie intake.

I honestly almost never weigh myself.  I use my skinny jeans as my barometer instead.  I figured if I said I wanted my skinny jeans to be looser people would think I was a weirdo.  So I guess now, the cats out of the bag.  That's my real goal.

Since you brought it up, I think the lb vs bf is an interesting topic.  I can say with certaintly that my best stand alone running weight doesn't produce as much power on the bike.  Since I've moved from being just a runner to being a triathlete, I have gained about 5lbs and lost more than 5% BF in the process (19% to 14%).  Anyone else struggle with that balance?  I would love to be closer to 100lbs ( think I look better), but I know it isn't as good for my performance.

I'm in the same boat... During my move to Germany I put on a few pounds which... Being in Germany... I lost rather quickly... Had some pants let out an inch before I left but left them here, now Hagar I'm back and thinner I need to get them brought in again lol

Ok, back in topic... I've always been on the small side, and I'm current 5'10" 154lbs... If I had to guess, through the next few months I will get up to 160 but will lose the little pudge I have at the waist... But recently I've held steady at 154 for a while...

All that to say, I wish I knew how to calculate body fat... Becuase that would be really nice to know... Other than that, I just use the scale to check hydration in the he morning and that type of stuff. I know if I drop below 153 it's probably beucase I'm dehydrated or something along those lines.

Weigh-in was on Sunday since it was my off day at the beginning of a full training week. I clocked in at 239.8, which is down .2 lbs from 11 days ago. A lot of it was due to the snow-in and losing access to decent, healthy food in a hurry. Chips and fattening stuff was commonplace (even though starvation sounds like a tempting option for about a second LOL)

That being said, I went for a 4 mile ride on my bike this morning. Besides the 5 mph wind in 50 degree temps being brutal (How exactly does that make sense?) it was a pretty good ride. Good recovery to the 6 mile ride Saturday and looking forward to kicking off the rest of the training week.

As for my concerns about how the numbers on the trainer reflect over, generally my concerns were verified, but I was surprised how quickly things shifted as the mileage increased; I was clocking times I saw in my trainer runs over the last few weeks on Saturday.

Update on the internship: I'm doing a phone interview for that later this week, which will probably feel more like a screening than a formal interview. Still trying to nail a date down at this time, though it appears it'll be on Friday.

I still can't wait for warm weather to get here. The local groundhog didn't see his shadow here, so here's hoping! :D

Thanks everybody for your kind comments on my half-marathon. I realize my idea of rough weather doesn't exactly equate with everybody else. Ice, snow, blizzards -- you guys are diehards!! I just posted my RR. My legs are still sore, but I hit the pool for a swim workout tonight. Felt good.

This morning's weigh-in was 180 lbs. Ugh. I actually gained five pounds in the last month. Hopefully, it's just from the pre-race pasta/carbo loading. My  goal for Feb is to get back down to 175 lbs.

weigh in as in actual weight? OY. Can I weigh in on Tuesday just before my colonoscopy? :D

Guess I missed a lot but I'm back from vacation!! It was epic - yeah that word is overused but OMG!! I've been skiing for 30 years and I've never seen snow like this - I'm so going back next year :D I'm dead tired but will try to catch up. Hope everyone is doing well!

Oh my gosh, that is so foreign and beautiful to me! How fun!

Obviously I have no shame in sharing my weight, lol! I need to track and watch my weight. After the "Summer Of Sad", I am paying for laying around and reading all of A Game Of Thrones and then some.

I'm in it to win it! Not just for the races I've signed up for, but for life! I need to find better ways of consoling myself when I'm down. I medicate with food and drink. I need to change that.

Could barely walk yesterday, and my training buddies and I (they did the 8.2 mile trail run too) looked like zombies on our run this morning. One of us ran with a drag in one leg, and one without being able to bend her knees. We laughed really hard for a minute over it.

Stoked for this month. A lot of work to do.

Steve,

I'm a little late to the game but I echo everyone else's congratulations. Going under 1:45 is moving right along. Very impressive.

Got up an struggled for an hour on the trainer this morning. Usually my morning workout is a swim but today it was time on the bike. I really, really wanted to climb back in bed but my guilty conscience would not let me. Damn this training OCD! I didn't feel spectacular but got it done. I was paying the price for, once again, running too hard yesterday. Monday the plan always says "easy run." It seems that nine times out of ten I go out and run too hard on Monday and then pay the price for the rest of the week. You think I would learn.

Stepped on the scale for the first time in forever. I am a post-breakfast, very well hydrated, 154 pounds this morning. I haven't been in the 155 pound range in a long time. I guess it is time for me to get on board with everyone else and start limiting what I put in my mouth. Don't like having to do it but I don't like being five (or seven......) pounds heavy either.

Ok, to go with the weight theme, what does everyone's diet look like? What have you found to be the best bet in terms of losing weight?

Personally, I eat a ton. When I was really lifting heavy post college and such I would eat really clean but just massive amounts and my metabolism really got accustomed to it. I still eat a lot now and often. Typical day is probably close to 3k calories intake, maybe a bit less depending on my workouts and what I've made myself for lunch that week.

Breakfast - 3 egg whites, 1 egg, all scrambled. 1 low fat turkey sausage, 2 pieces of whole wheat toast, large cup of water. Water with all my meals.
Snack (9am) - 2 pieces of whole wheat bread with natural sugar/salt free PB, 1 good sized apple
Lunch - Whatever we made for the week. This week it's a chicken noodle soup with WW pasta, white beans, grilled chicken, carrots, celery. If I swim that day I'll have a protein shake with 2 scoops of whey and 2 cups of skim milk after the swim and before the solid food. 15-20 mins before the swim I'll have a nature valley granola bar or something similar to have some food in my stomach.
Snack (3pm) - Greek yogurt, some wheat thins, low fat cottage cheese, apple
Dinner - My wife cooks pretty healthy. It's either WW pasta or WW rice with veggies (broc, cauliflower, carrots, onions, etc) and chicken, turkey burger or chicken sausage.
Workout around 8pm and after that I have a glass of chocolate milk and depending on my mood a bowl of Honeynut Cheerios which is my serious weakness. I'd eat an entire box of cereal if left to my own devices.

Comes to just under 3k calories, again depending on the lunch and dinner really. The breakfast and snacks have been the same for a really long time, I don't feel complete if I'm eating something different for breakfast.

In terms of working out, if I specifically want to cut weight I'll monitor my calories for about a week to see where I'm at and shoot for roughly a 500 cal negative after workouts, or I'll throw in a 20-30 minute strength training session here and there because I feel that my body really reacts well to the weights now that I never lift anymore. If necessary, I can drop a few pounds in one week pretty easily. Again, back when I was really lifting and measuring food to the gram I was just amazed at the things you could/can do with your body and working out and eating correctly.

Early morning swim done! Would have been cutting it close to get it done at lunch so I dragged my butt out of bed and did it. I never seem to have "good" swims first thing in the morning. How many times have you heard me say that ? 3750 yards.....more of an endurance swim than hard intervals. Easy run and some strength this evening.

Weight-when I first started doing triathlons I weighed about 183. I did a good bit of weight work and some running. Now, as of this morning, I was 163. I suspect part of that is due to the fact that I have not been running much. Running just seems to be the best way for me to take off weight. During the last Summer/race season I was between 156-158 @ 5 feet 10.5 inches tall. Seems the heat and hard training just naturally cause me to slim down some. My weakness is snacking after dinner. Ice cream, cookies, candy....all the good stuff. I can't eat just one cookie, a piece of candy or a couple of spoons of ice cream. So, that is where I need to cut back. All those calories/carbs right before bed are terrible.  I eat fairly healthy during the day. I bring a sandwich from home and do a protein shake with it for lunch everyday. Over the past week I've substituted my toast/butter at breakfast for an apple and yogurt. Just need to get some self discipline for the nightly snacks. So, I''ll join in and shoot for 159.5 as of the end of Feb. but my main goal will be to eat healthier.

I'm using my weight TODAY (pre colonoscopy LOL clean report btw) at 127.5. I'm 5'2" and the lowest I've ever seen was 124 when I was running 25 miles a week. Realistically, with my body shape I don't think I'll get below 126 again but I'm good with 126. I think that's my beginning of season goal so I'm not putting a time line on it just yet. All I need to do is stop putting the extra pretzels and what not in my mouth and it'll go down

So yep, gotta get back in the swing.........It's like I tell everyone at the office "all good diets start on Mondays" so my half marathon training plan starts Monday :D Snow storm tomorrow and another on Sunday night into Monday morning. how cool is that? Maybe I'll sneak out for snowshoe run soon!!

Ok, now that I'm up and coherent I really should be doing some work.

Hasta.

Steve: Congratulations on a rockin' race time!! /highfive

Husband and I have actually been on a vegetarian diet. Mostly him, but I've been doing it with him in a show of solidarity. He's checking to see if it helps his health stats. He has issues with blood pressure that's been a pain to manage. We're two weeks in and he's been able to maintain good blood pressure on days he doesn't run. Normally he has to get a run in to feel good.

The side effect for me is I've dropped a few pounds (yes, I was heavier to start...eek!), my waist has shrunk, and my tummy's been happy!

Being active again has motivated me to eat better. I wish I would eat better just to be healthier though. Le sigh.

I have a swim today and some time on the trainer, but I have a sick little cutie pie at home with me.
