hey everyone, hope you had great weekends.  gomesbolt, we drove through DC yesterday and i did think of vets.  it's easy to forget sometimes memorial day weekend is not just about grilling.

i am back from our trip to north carolina, the wedding was lovely, but i hardly went outside at all, all free time was spent working.  at least i did hit the hot tub for an hour after the wedding ended.  but no workouts.

now im getting REALLY stressed about this presentation thursday.....i can't wait til it's over.

Hi everyone!!!  Hope you had a great holiday!!!

I got another OWS in today!  Yippee!!!  I'm glad I did it, too!  The water temp was about 55 degrees which is about what Boise is going to be on Sunday.  I tried out some neoprene booties with my sleeveless wetsuit and a neoprene cap covered by a standard rubber cap.  I also wore silicone ear plugs.  (No gloves.  My shoulders are injury-prone so just didn't want to risk them.)  I tossed the booties in my husbands kayak after a little while.  They produced so much drag that I was completely out of breath!  My feet were a little cold, but not bad.  I was in the water for about 30 minutes.

The rest of the week is going to consist of hydrating my body and gathering my race gear.  Cheers everyone!

JJ, That's great the way that all worked-out. I always ended-up showing up on a base for a class or a deployment as the event finished the weekend before.  Is the 200 m swim in the pool or the ocean? That's a short swim.

Tracy, good job getting that practice-in.  Aren't you glad you didn't show-up at the race and find out all that stuff.

Lisa,  You didn't get a workout while you were in the hot-tub?  Whoops... that's a little over the line... glad you had a good break though.  DC is pretty solemn for memorial day as it should be.

Anyway, I'm digging-in for the last week and then taper next week while I'm travelling (I know Lauren, not a great idea.  But I gotta) and then Sprint Tri on the 8th! I'm pretty excited except the race is through the 'hood.  Someone was shot there this weekend.  Better run fast.

Where is everyone????

I'm fishing for some last minute taper nutrition/hydration advice.  I currently have two 1-liter bottles sitting in front of me that I have to drink during the day.  Those bottles DO NOT include any water I drink while working out, brushing my teeth, taking vitamins, etc.  Any help would be appreciated.

Do you need help drinking the water? I don't even know how many ounces a liter is.

I drink all day; I keep a big bottle filled with water and then keep pouring the water into an 8 oz glass and drink out of that.

No worries, it's all good. I was really just referring to an IM taper (when your body is undergoing a lot more recovering, and when any bit of illness would have an exponentially greater effect on the race).

Oh geez, yeah -- better run fast!! Sounds dangerous !

Oh okay, that's what my water bottle thing is. I go through 2.5-3 of them each day while at work, plus what I drink before and after work, workouts, etc. I do find that pouring into the cup is a good method for me, not sure why that works better than using a straw or drinking out of the bottle, though .

Man! This board is dead with all the people on their vacations, JJ at school, Aikidoman out east, etc.

So I ordered some shoes, was pretty excited about them.  Waited several days for them.  Just got them in last night.  WRONG SIZE!!! The size was what I ordered, it's just that they were a half-size small! How bad does that suck? Anyway, Sauconys= 1/2 size smaller just so you know.

I went to my nutritionist appt yesterday and as she's looking at my net calories (calories in minus calories expended in exercise), she says "you only had 101 calories on this day?" and I said "no, that's negative 101 calories on that day."  She was all confused, she's so used to dealing with overweight people who don't want to lose the weight.  I've kept my 2lbs per week (actually 2.25 lbs per week since I started the program).  I'm doing it for better performance so I have a motivation.  I think that's why it works better for me.  By the July Race, I won't be in the Clyde 225+ category.  How cool is that?

Haha.. that's funny.  I'm the exact opposite.  I really dislike drinking water out of a glass for some reason.  I prefer straight from the bottle even though it really shouldn't matter... it's the same water!!

Well, I'm the real weirdo. I hate drinking water out of glass glasses. Not sure why, but I've never liked it. It has to be plastic, paper, or styrofoam. I'll put up with it at restaurants and when at people's houses, but when I go to my parents' for dinner, my mom knows to set me a plastic glass rather than a glass glass. Haha .

hahahhah!! Styrofoam??  How can that possibly be better than glass?  If my teeth hit the side of a sytrofoam cup I get the "fingers down a chalkboard" chills.. lol.  Hierarchy of cup preferences... glass > plastic > paper > styrofoam..

Speaking of water... can you recommend some swimming drills that would be most beneficial to a new freestyle swimmer??  I'm comfortable in the water and I can breathe easily to both sides, but that's about all I have goin' for me.

WOOT!! Congrats on the weightloss!!

One question for you, though. Did you accidentally order the wrong size, or have you never tried on the shoes? I would highly recommend going to a good running store who can make a recommendation for the best shoe for you, if you haven't already done so.

I hope it all works out !

Valid Question.

I didn't try them on at a store.  I had a Doctor (I met while I was at the hospital with my wife and baby) tell me about the shoes and he looked at my wear pattern and said he had the same.  All the looking at shoes online pointed to them being good.  I just ordered 10.5s and they arrived and are really snug.  My current shoes (NBs) Old shoes (Nikes) and really old shoes (Asics) were all 10.5.  I don't think my feet grew so much as these ran small.  I was debating keeping them and giving them a try on the road but I decided that the feet swelling thing will probably make that a moo point. Like a cow's opinion.  Moo.

Problem store-wise is the running sports store is where I've now bought two pairs of ill-suited shoes because the lady who owns the place looked at my feet, watched me walk, recommended a shoe and I went with it.  Problem is I never ran in them and they ended up being wrong.  The other alternative is a Sports Authority with some teenager telling me about the shoes or driving an hour and a half to Ft Lauderdale for shoes.  I think Choice 3 is looking good now.  I may have to do that so I can get the shoes before next week's trip and I'm not running in the worn-out shoes I have for the race.

You are doing such a great job at the weight loss!!!!   Why would an overweight person go to a nutritionist if they don't want to lose weight?????  That seems like a waste of money.

Should I wear my heart rate monitor during the bike and run on the HIM?  I wear it all the time so I am very used to it.  No worries there.  Comments?

If you've been training with it, I totally would. However, I would wear the strap for the swim too so you don't have to deal with putting it on in T1.

Unless it's a Garmin Strap because I'm told those don't do too well on the swim.  Maybe someone else can chime-in with some actual experience, but the book says it's not waterproof.

It is a Polar.  I've never swum with the strap on so I don't know if it will annoy me.  I'm kinda thinking it will be a pain in the butt to put the strap on in T1.

The hubby did all his HIM and his IM wearing the Polar strap in the water (but not the watch) and got the watch in T1.  No problems - and he found it useful to help pace himself, since he knew his body so well from training with it on all the time.

good luck this weekend!!!!!!! rock some azz for us!

Your Polar wrist unit should be waterproof and you should be able to wear it during the swim. Your HR may not be accurate during the swim, but at least it's on there. I swam with a HR monitor strap once, and I didn't notice it. Some people have said it's uncomfortable. Will you be going for a quick swim at all before the race?

If you've ever changed the battery in your strap, it may no longer be waterproof unless you were sure to re-seal it.
