Sorry to hear about the injuries! That always makes the training more interesting. Be careful with the plantar fasciitis. I have seen that sideline too many people. I am glad I am not the only one up this morning. It always feels so lonely on this board at 5am east coast time. |

Member 53 Roswell, GA | Subject: RE: Ironman Florida : Official Thread Good weekend here. Did the South Carolina Half and had good results (for me) and a solid-feeling race. Definitely felt like I could've gone longer in each discipline (though certainly don't plan to keep up my HIM pace in FL!). Happy training, everyone! Be careful - only a few weeks to go! Cheers, Mark |

New user 84 | Subject: RE: Ironman Florida : Official Thread lesleyann - 2009-09-30 8:07 PM Sadly enough, it most likely will take me around 6:45-7 hrs to do the bike in Florida so I guess that is why my coach is having me do such long rides. I get 105-110 in 7 hrs in this terrain in central Pa. I did Chesapeakeman aqua-velo bike portion in 6:50 which is very comparable to Florida. I guess the good news is that I will be prepared. Don't feel so bad, I am hoping I can do the ride in 6 hours.....I went for my long ride a couple of weeks ago, took me 7:20 to do 100 miles...but I had traffic lights, and even a local parade to deal with...I'm in Central PA too...Bucknell University area...tried to find a route that was flat... Regular 70 in a pool, on a bike, or up the trail | Subject: RE: Ironman Florida : Official Thread Mr Steve - 2009-10-06 4:04 PM lesleyann - 2009-09-30 8:07 PM Sadly enough, it most likely will take me around 6:45-7 hrs to do the bike in Florida so I guess that is why my coach is having me do such long rides. Mr Steve I am curious how hilly is Central PA? I'm in Western North Carolina and there's no such thing as flat here. As such, I have a hard time comparing my training rides to what I'll do in FL. My "goal" for the ride is 5.5 hours (roughly 20.3mph). I may not be able to pull that off, conserving for the run. By comparison, my ride weekend was 88 miles and it took me 6 hours. The difference? I did over 9000' of climbing during the 88. Most of my riding is done on the Blue Ridge Parkway. Anybody else live in really hilly terrain and have trouble doing the equivalent of a 'flat' ride? I try to use the long climbs as steady tempo efforts to train by target heart rate, trying to stay below 150 if at all possible. |

17 | Subject: RE: Ironman Florida : Best hotels There are expensive and nice hotels near the start; there are nasty hotels near the start, and a lot in between. Can you help me out and recommend something close to the start / finish, but is not gross. For reference, I stayed at the Holiday Inn last year, and it was great, cheap ~ 100/nt, but it was about 1 mile from the start. Not bad, but there is better and closer. Can you recommend a specific hotel that you have had success with that is not nasty? |

I try to use the long climbs as steady tempo efforts to train by target heart rate, trying to stay below 150 if at all possible. I don't live in Western NC, but do live around the Lake Norman area. It's tough to find anything more than a mile or two that's flat. Most of it is rolling. So you averaged just about 15mph for that 88 miler. Most of that on the BRP. From my experience, I'd say you are in line to hit a 20mph avg or so for the IM. I can do 100 miles, without pushing too hard, around my area and average 18 or so. Again, mostly rolling terrain. I've been on the parkway plenty of times and have done the Assault on Mt Mitchell a few times. My best time for the Assault was 6:18. I am looking to avg 22 or so at IMFL and this should still leave me something for the run. Of course that all depends on the wind and weather. Hopefully this will give you some sort of reference. Where in Western NC are you? |

I try to use the long climbs as steady tempo efforts to train by target heart rate, trying to stay below 150 if at all possible. I used to live in Asheville, NC and hated riding. I just hate hills. Never liked them. Never did, Never will. I was impressed with all the bike riders on the Blue Ridge Parkway heading to Mount Mitchell. I guess the term hilly is subjective term. I was able to go to Cape May, NJ in August and found a perfect flat road to practice riding. My target is for 6 hours on the bike. Halfway point on the bike at 12:00. Back at T2 at 3:00pm....Anytime before that is bonus. Weather here has been awful, forcing me on the trainer in the basement. At least when I ride the trainer, I do not have to wait for traffic lights, etc...just continuous pedaling.... I chose IMFL since the bike course was flat. Mr Steve |
