I felt like I was going slower and slower and my form was getting worse and worse, so I actually took a break from trying that for a few weeks leading up to my last race. I need to get back on it and start trying again but I can honestly say I'm not looking forward to it. Those new tricks for this old dog are a PITA! Soldier on, man...just think of all the new neural pathways you're creating! Ugh! Bi-lateral breathing... the bane of my existance! I've tried over the past couple of years to incorporate it into my training, but I always feel like I'm starting back on square 1. I can swim 3,000 continuous yds only breathing to the left, but if I try bi-lateral, I'm winded before I reach 50 yds. So every year its the same thing... I say I'll work on it in the offseason... and it never happens. Oh well, I guess my tri nickname can just be Lefty. I have tried and tried and tried to do bi-lateral breathing...I will make myself do it for an entire workout...but the second I get into a stressful situation (race, sprints, master's swimming), I fall immediately back onto breathing on my left side only. At this point, I figure there is some cosmic reason I need to be breathing on my left side - so I will try to bi-lateral breathe when I am drilling and just let the breaths come where they may in a race, etc. Glad to hear you are still trying the rollers, Warren - I have it in the back of my head, but haven't gotten the courage up. Have you noticed any change in your bike handling skills outside? When I got outside for a bike for the first time this spring, I realized how sloppy I had gotten riding the trainer. I like the trainer - but it really is different than riding outside. |

Soldier on, man...just think of all the new neural pathways you're creating! Just keep at it, I had the same experience at first, felt like poor form, neck strain/pain, etc. One technique that helped I read maybe on that swim smooth site, was to have someone walk with you on the deck and look at thier feet when you come up to breathe. I didn't ever have anyone walk with me, so I just tried to look at the edge of the pool across from where I was breathing and someones feet would be if they were walking along with me. I just did it every workout almost during warmup and slower main sets and sometimes on cooldowns when I wasn't too tired. I am now doing it much more comfortably and will likely try it during my Olympic this weekend. I didn't try it on my sprint race as I just swam my guts out and didn't worry about breathing. |

On a side note question - I can fit a 45 minute workout very nicely into my Tues/Thurs life without impacting family stuff (a huge priority for me), and I've used that as a run time. Do you think I can get a good enough outside bike workout in that time to ride rather than run sometimes? |

Particular if I'm trying to swim smooth and easy (not a full out sprint), I fall into bilateral breathing naturally. I think the reason for training with bilateral breathing is really just to make sure your stroke is balanced between both sides since we tend to have a different rotation during our breath strokes. I know that a LOT of people advocate training bilateral but not worrying about it during a race - just do what comes naturally and gets you to T1 with enough energy to kill the rest of the race. Of course, bilateral ability would come in handy if there is surf or people on your "normal" breathing side during a race. Now for the rollers... |

Now its all I do except in very short (25y) sprints. |

Extreme Veteran 386![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Rio Rancho - where you can ride year round! | Subject: RE: Aaron Davidson's Group -- Closed.bilateral breathing is a natural part of my swimming as well - I never had to adapt to it. As for one-sided breathing, I find I get dizzy if I do it too much - so I will breathe in a pattern like this if I feel winded - breathe on the right stroke, left stroke, breathe on the right stroke, go three strokes, breath on the left, stroke, breathe on the left, and alternate back to the right (if that makes sense, so a 2, 2, 3, 2 2....). doing this a few times seems to get me back on track when winded. |

Hopefully, I will have time the next 3 days to read through everything. Aaron, no aerobic exercise because the PADI manual and our scuba instructor warned against exercise for several hours after diving as it can trigger a BENDS episode. So, I took it safe seeing as we were diving 2-4 times a day. Besides, my ankle, hip, and ITB benefitted from the rest. |
