I might go run with the wife tonight but I also have to do domestic god duties sometime (mow lawn, wash clothes etc). I've been lazy after getting back from Mexico. I did get a quarter size water blister on the bottom of my right foot at Las Palomas. I ran wit hit last night and it didn't feel good so I got home and cut it off. Don't know if that was a smart decision or not. I guess time will tell. I want to get in at least 10 miles of running this week. Still need to go pick up my bike from my friend who brought it down to Mexico for me.

I'll be following a few people this weekend up at IMSG. Good luck up there.

i usually cut/pick my blisters too. Just a word of advice...if you go to a gym and ever waklk around barefoot there (like in the showers) make sure you cover your foot after you cut a blister...untill it heals. I did not, and got athletes foot EXACTLY where the blister was. Random fact for you...

holy crap... I went to that ironmanlive.com site just to see what was there right now... there's an auction for a Kona slot showing with 3 days remaining... current bid is $27,100!!!! SRLY? Not only is it sad someone is willing to shell out that much money to go to Kona, but I think it's kind of shameful that someone will get to say "yeah, I did Kona" when they really just bought their way into it... It's like racing Boston without actually qualifying for it.  Not trying to being an elitist here, I haven't done either, but I'd like to think that if I qualify for either of them, that it's held to a higher standard and that I'm not going to get asked "oh, did you just buy your way in?"

yeah, and the people who get in through the lottery are all wanna-be losers too.

My 500-odd bucks is someone else's 27,000-odd bucks.

I say good for WTC... if someone's willing to pay it, charge them.  In fact, sell more buy-your-way-in entries but reduce general race entry with the profits

Problem is, they'll sell those high costs ones and continue to raise the cost for everyone else too.  Next thing you know, you work your butt off to get there, and it's $2000+ just for registration.  There's enough "other" IM races people can do (myself included) that you don't need to make Kona less of a race, it should continue to be the top tear of IM.  If someone with $27k wanted to do the race they could get in the same way everyone else has to.

I have a pretty general swim question. For my HIM distance race i am unsure how hard to push on the swim. In my past 2 i have generally taken it nice and easy. yet for some reason i want to try and push a little harder for this one. Thoughts? I am a BOP swimmer incase that helps.

IMHO you should aim to come out of the water feeling like it was no big deal.  The difference in energy expenditure to swim 3 minutes faster is probably pretty big.  Whereas in the course of the day, 3 minutes is nothing to make up if you feel fresh on the bike and run.  Like Fred has said several times, lots of people put themselves in a hole during the swim that they never fully climb out of for the rest of the race.

I'll let you know what that feels like on 5/9, the day after my HIM... a race for which I have swum only 18,000 yards during training in the past 4 months.

I got a nice run in this morning.  Spent some time on the hotel recumbent bike last night, if I am going to be out here much past next week I am going to have to look into renting.  I may do that anyways, it looks like it is going to be a nice weekend here.  Has anyone else ever rented a bike when travelling?

You could draft off me, I'll be back there with you!

Seriously though, I am swimming more this year than past years, mostly in hopes of coming out of the water fresher as Fred discussed.  I expect I may improve my time some, but if not I fully expect to benefit on the bike from the extra swimming.

Thanks for the input guys. I am thinking of letting the first few minutes go by, then seeking out someone that is going at my pace to draft off of. I agree with you Josh that the 3 minutes saved on the swim will probably not be worth it with the extra effort i will have to give to take those 3 minutes off. A smarter move if to take it easyish and come out of the water fresher. Thanks!

So I have been disappointed in my run times for the last two tri's that I have done and I have spent some time trying to figure out what is going on.

1st...I went back and looked at my logs and noticed that I took 6 rest days off in Feb (not bad), 15 days off in Mar (was sick but that's 1/2 the month) and Apr (10 days so far...too many).

2nd...I really spent a lot of time on the swim in the 1st 3 months of training. I was struggling with the swim at 1st and after I got better I spent a bit more time working on being comfortable and a little OWS.

3rd...When I did run I did mainly 3-4 miles max and only half of that was running.

So after looking at all my training logs I have come to the conclusion that I have just not trained enough. I have not put in the amount of time or effort to get better, especially on the run. I also have spent some time hiking and walking on the treadmill that I could have spent biking or running. Over the next 3 weeks I'm going to really try to get my 5k run down to about 30 minutes. I know that is slow for some of you but that is the goal that I have set for myself. After I finish my sprint on May 16th, I'm going to go into 1/2 IM training for October.

In the 1st two triathlons, my goal was just to finish but now I want to start to whittle my time down on both sprint and oly distance races. I would like to be able to do the 1/2 IM, not just finish. I have come to the conclusion that I need to stop making excuses and get the job done through training. It starts tonight!

Todd, great post!  It is hard to be introspective on one's own training and not make excuses.  It looks like you have identified areas which will help you attain your goals.

I have a great ability to make excuses for myself and take rest days from training.  Some of my favorites are, weather prevented me from getting outside, legs are sore/tired, felt like sleeping in, etc.  We all suffer from it to some extent.  I have a friend who gave me good advice about getting out and training.  Basically said - Just commit to 5 minutes, 99% of the time after 5 minutes your feeling better and will continue on for a normal workout.  He is correct, normally the stumbling block is getting out of the door.

What is your plan for getting your 5k down to 30 minutes?  I would love to get my 5k down to 30 minutes sometime before I die
