ETA: Oops, posted this before reading your last post Greg. Nice job fighting through the GI issues and congrats on the PR, hope all are feeling better. Actually Alex did great he wasn't affected for some reason, just me and my youngest son. I was by his side for the whole thing. I was really proud of him, he did great and I was really surprised by his pace on the run! His finishing and excitement was the best part of the day for me, he actually said it was one of the best days of his life. It was great to see him enjoy a sport and really get something from it. He has struggled with team sports due to some challenges he faces (Autism/Aspergers, Sensory, etc) but nothing was going to hold him back yesterday. He could focus and not have to worry about anything else in the world! Again a beautiful day for him and it choked Dad up seeing it happen. |

Regular 97 | Subject: RE: Dream Chaser's 'Set a Goal and Capture it!' Mentor Group - CLOSED Hi all: I just printed out my result from this past Saturday and was just reflecting on my race. I'm torn about how I should feel: happy that I was able to finish the race, or disappointed because I felt like I could have done better. I guess it's a combination of both. Race day it was an overcast day in Sunny So Cal. This was a lake swim instead of ocean swim. I was nervous, and I think that's probably how it's going to be with all my swims. There's this sense of anxiety and I don't think that helps my cause going into this portion of the race. When I swim in the pool, I have been using bi lateral breathing and breathing every fourth stroke. However, I tried doing this and I couldn't find a rhythm and like the previous race, I was probably hyperventilating again. I remember getting really frustrated and I looked over at the lifeguard boat and for one moment, I was considering tapping out. That was a down point. But I told myself, "no way, I've trained too much and invested too much of my time, however long it's going to take I'm going to get through the swim" so for the remaining portion of the race, I alternated between free and back stroking my way. Eventually I found some type of rhythm by breathing every other stroke. I don't like this because if feel like I'm leaning on one side. But this got me through the latter half of the swim. Final result: 42:14 (yuck!); I wanted to finish the swim in 35 minutes. T: 2:48 Bobby, coming out of the swim, I remembered your wise words that it's not all about PR but coming out of the swim and feeling good for the next portion. I thought about that as I was struggling toward shore. My transition could use more work. I felt good on the bike. I know this isn't my strength since I only ride once a week and I have only been training on the bike for about a month. I wasn't familiar with the course so I didn't know what the course entails. This was three laps about the park and boy this was a tough course. Good amount of uphills and a few nice downhills. I didn't have a time frame on how long this will take; I just wanted a strong ride. I can't believe how fast some of the riders are. I kept thinking to myself, "should I invest in a better bike?" but I concluded that's yes bike helps but being in biking shapes probably helps a lot more. So lesson learned, get into bike shape. The last lap was tough, especially the hills, I tried pushing it as much as I can but I can really feel my quads cramping up. Finally finished the bike course 1:32:39. T: 1:54 Now, what I feel is my strength, the run. But I didn't feel that well coming off the bike because of the cramping I was feeling in my quads. But I knew I could make up some time on the run. Doesn't it feel the six miles are longer than six miles. It felt like it went on forever. I tried to intake as much h2o as possible on the run, I had to stop three or four times to walk and stretch. Part of me wanted to walk more and longer but another part said, "no way, enough walking" run it out. I also felt sorta "funny" during the run, could it be that I'm bonking/lack of fuel or that I'm coming down with something. As I saw the finish line, I got into a sprint and sprinted across the finish line. Run: 53:38 Well, this was one of my best 10K run. This actually was a good race, I liked the course, it was challenging and perfect weather. Well, I know what I need to work on (everything!!!) so back to the drawing board. Now I have my eye on LA Tri (ocean swim) in Sept and possibly one more this year. So guys and gals, thanks for your words of encouragement. What I would really appreciate, are words of advise and insight on how to train better and race better. later Jeff

Master 1531 TORONTO | Subject: RE: Dream Chaser's 'Set a Goal and Capture it!' Mentor Group - CLOSED Hey Jeff! Good race! It might not feel that way but... considering the restricted training time since your child was born... I think you did well! Personally I find the swim is one of those things you just have to deal with when the race starts. No matter how much pool swimming, or practice open water swims - it all comes down to waves, wind, currents and how you are feeling on that day. I find it so unpredictable. Races are always an excellent opportunity to do some review and seek out areas you can improve. I know we shouldn't compare but I'd KILL for those results. Okay maybe not kill... maybe sedate... maybe |

So sorry to hear about it although must be a relief to know why you've been in pain. Is there any way you can do a swim/bike event? Transfer your fees over? Some races here offer them. Most are the HIM distance but some are shorter. Just a thought - at least you'd get to test out that training. Or - if you've already registered why not just do it anyway and get the DNF? |

Oh....NOOOOoooooooo!!!! That sucks! If the course is long enough for you to walk one or both of the events, do that! There is one guy who is doing CDA IM who may be walking (well I am sure there will be a lot more people then him but) because of an injury. You can practice your swim/T1, Bike/T2 and walk the run. Hope that heals up quickly enough for you to participate in your Oly! |

Hey, I know happens but I thought it already happened when I wound up in the ER back in April. I'm so pissed I could scream. Hey Mike. Sorry to hear. The good thing is it's NOT a chronic, debilitating condition. I have 2 friends and an uncle who have 'no cartilage' left in their knees and it's bone on bone pain they encounter when they try to run or bike. Be grateful you have the cartilage, it's just inflamed. I've been told this condition can resolve quickly, so there is still hope for your Oly. First things first, the inflamed cartilage is the symptom; but what caused it? I see it's your left knee. Was it the running or biking that you think did it. If it's the biking are you flaring your knee out? Did your seat height change? Sometimes the cleat angle shifts. If it's the running, how many miles are on your shoes? What shoes do you run in? Are you heel-striking? Running on the same side of the road? (How you run barefoot through a field should be the same way you run in shoes. If not, get different shoes.) Sometimes, believe it or not, diet can cause inflamation. A high salt diet and certain foods can cause swelling and make your joints more suseceptible to such injuries. Drink lots of water. Try to eat clean (NO fast food). Also, try taking some fish oil, vitamin E, glucosamine and chondroitin. Do you have a chiro near buy that does Kinesiotaping? Sometimes this condition is caused by the kneecap not properly, and a simple kinesio tape job (which you can do yourself) will alleviate the condition quickly: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=N8lWTQsMKJo For now, like you're doing, it's all about R.I.C.E - Rest. Ice. Compression. Elevation. Pop a few NASAIDS and take it a day at a time. I, personally, would soak the knee in an ice bath twice a day for 15 mins a clip. After a few days I'd introduce swimming back in -- making sure to NOT push off the pool wall. Then I'd ease into some easy spinning on the bike. Then Running - 1 mile at a time. If the pain or soreness returns at all, STOP immediately, take 2 Rest days and then try to resume. If the pain comes back, STOP, and now take 3 Rest days. Repeat such a regiment until you can train EZ and consistently at a low volume for several days before returning back to your normal routine. Edited by Dream Chaser 2011-06-20 7:40 AM |

I peeked at a lot of logs this morning and it would seem everyone had a good weekend!! I'm working from my plan - missed all my swim workouts this past week though so need to make that more of a priority this week moving forward. As I look at my plan I have no doubt it will get me to the finish line - I just wonder if when they wrote it they had a hilly race in mind!? I rode 90km on Saturday and did some pretty hilly sections but it still took me 4 hours I can console myself and say it was city traffic but still.... I'm thinking this is going to be a very very long day! I think I'll feel way better (or way worse) after the July long weekend as we're going on a family holiday to the resort and I will ride the course. Until then... it's all a bit of a mystery and so I just keep plugging along. Hope everyone had a good father's day yesterday - Chava excluded |

Riding the course is such a huge bonus. But trust me, less thinking - more doing. . You inside your own head is the enemy. Just take it a day at a time.,then each week glance at your volume, and at the end of each month glance again... But just a glance, then STARE and focus on your next workout. Our job is to stay in the Present. Focus on what we can control. The here and now. Stop worrying about Race Day. If you focus on each day, you glance favorably at each week and month and you'll have a great Race Day. Trust me. Morning Everyone!
