Expert 683 | Subject: RE: HILDEKQ'S Magnificently Motivational Mentor Group - CLOSED!!!! One thing I forgot to mention: as part of my recent tri shopping, I got an updated Road ID-- the Elite interactive one (with the online profile). As a result, I've got a coupon for 10% off for people to use on their own orders-- if anyone wants a copy, PM me and I'll happily pass it along. Road ID is one piece of equipment that I won't leave the house without! Oh, and I got two bands: black for the decorous look, and ORANGE for every other day! After all, if I can't speak for myself, I want responders to be able to SEE the bracelet... Alex |

Extreme Veteran 746 | Subject: RE: HILDEKQ'S Magnificently Motivational Mentor Group - CLOSED!!!! Thanks for the trainer info - I'm guessing the dept store ones are the "cheap, nasty" kind but as that's essentially what my bike is it shouldn't matter much - I just need to find the space. As to the paddles - I think the plan (the 2 follow up ones) have it about that often - and never for the entire workout Erin - So do you train or race them?
Alex - Will readings for Uni work for the distraction bit? K - hope your daughter enjoys her riding lessons. If you start to see her getting serious I'd start saving for the horse though

I first saw them on my phone and the top one almost looked like you were topless, I thought, "Wow, that IS some kind of sport!", ha ha!! Beautiful animals, they are so big they kind of scare me though... and I'm pretty allergic to them, at least I was the last time I was around them which I think was in college... you're gonna be ALL OVER fit after a month of riding them!! |

Veteran 545 South Shore, MA | Subject: RE: HILDEKQ'S Magnificently Motivational Mentor Group - CLOSED!!!! WTF!!! setting up the trainer has been an epic fail tonight. actually the trainer set up was easy, but i was literally wrestling with my rear wheel for 3 hours trying to get the new indoor tire on!! i bought a kinetic kenda tire for my rear wheel b/c my LBS recommended it and i know that trainers can destroy your tires. now that i'm looking at reviews of these tires, i wish i had never purchased it! you literally cannot get it on the wheel - that's the trouble i was having and what all the reviews say. after 2 broken tire levers, a punctured tube and bloody hands (both my husbands and mine!), i have officially thrown in the towel and am bringing the tire back tomorrow. and i was so excited to use the trainer today, boo!!!! the silver lining is that i am now an expert at changing flats! and why do the you tube videos make it look so darn easy/quick??!! |

Extreme Veteran 746 | Subject: RE: HILDEKQ'S Magnificently Motivational Mentor Group - CLOSED!!!! K - sorry about the indoor tire. Hope you didn't get any blood on it so the shop will take it back. One idea - is it possible to get a new wheel that this tire can go on so that you just swap wheels rather than tires? |

Expert 1618 Temple, TX | Subject: RE: HILDEKQ'S Magnificently Motivational Mentor Group - CLOSED!!!! Oh Kristen, I've heard that about trainer tires.... I think one thing you could try is to throw it in the dryer and heat it up for a few minutes to help it stretch? I just use an old tire, and I haven't noticed too much tire degradation, but then again, I'm not riding it every day or anything. Maybe make the LBS put the tire on? I bet you could get it OFF once it's on? I know you must have felt like an idiot before you turned to hubby to try, but at least you have the satisfaction of knowing HE couldn't do it either! Bloody hands??? YIKES... Sounds to me like you should log it as a sport, sure sounds like you broke a sweat! WTF is RIGHT! |

The sleeping bag was too hot and confining. The carpet was itchy. The dog seems to have a bladder infection and was up multiple times to pee frantically while I held the leash from just inside the door. |

Expert 972 Falls Church | Subject: RE: HILDEKQ'S Magnificently Motivational Mentor Group - CLOSED!!!! Kristin - Boo on the tire. But you will like your trainer once you get it set up. You can get a good workout in without putting the bike in the car to get to a safe riding area (which is what I have to do). Erin - OMG! Pretty amazing. Your are a horse trainer. Way cool. Be careful. I was wondering what the reference to a dangerous job was. I did a 5 mile trail race this weekend. Difficult one. Two very tough hills and two segments of rocks along a river. 2nd place in my age group (there were only 4!). Haha. But I did have a decent run. The Garmin said 4.85 miles but the race director said 5.5. So who really knows. There are two spots in the Garmin data that looks like it lost a signal for a bit. But the discrepancy is a bit big.

Expert 1007 Missouri | Subject: RE: HILDEKQ'S Magnificently Motivational Mentor Group - CLOSED!!!! Kristen - sorry about the tire trouble. I think I'm glad I just left my normal one on when I got my trainer. I know I'll probably have to switch it out before getting back out on the roads, though - it's already starting to look a little worn (and I don't ride that long or that often). Melanie - congrats on 2nd place in your AG at your race! Awesome job! I did a race over the weekend too - 10k trail run. I came in 13th out of 13 in my AG and almost last overall (92nd out of 109), but I'm OK with it. It was a great race for me and my finish time was actually about 5 min faster than I expected so I'm happy. There's a link to the RR in my logs if you're interested (can't ever seem to get it to work right when I try to link it here). Edited by soccermom15 2012-03-05 4:35 PM |

Veteran 421 | Subject: RE: HILDEKQ'S Magnificently Motivational Mentor Group - CLOSED!!!! I have a silly what would you do type of question. It's running related. So if you lived on a hilly street and were considering running up the hill out of your driveway, would you just start out going that way without a little warmup or something? My road is a pretty steep hill. It starts about 1/4 mile from my house at a main road then goes up and curves for 3/4 mile then levels off a bit for 1/4 mile and continues up again for 1/2 mile. I'm estimating here, but there's a reason that there is "Hill" in the road name. So my house is about 1/4 mile up from the main rd. I usually go down the hill (when I run from home) cross the main road and run a flat to gradual incline type of road. I'm not sure if running a hill right off the bat might spike my HR and really make my run impossible. I guess I could run/walk. Any advice or suggestions?

But a 1/4 mile power walk up the hill might be the best thing. If my heart rate gets going too high too early I am doomed for the rest of the run.

Good question.... I'm like Melanie, once my HR gets high, it's just about impossible for it to come back down. That said, I'm kind of in the same boat but luckily have about 1/4 mile downhill before that first uphill, so I just go for it. I think I would go for the hill, but use a quick cadence, small steps, and take it easy, or like Melanie said, power walk it for a bit before running.... I NEVER warm up for a run, probably shouldn't admit that!! |

Extreme Veteran 495 | Subject: RE: HILDEKQ'S Magnificently Motivational Mentor Group - CLOSED!!!! rustymom - 2012-03-06 5:30 AM I have a similar situation; if I go one direction, it's straight up a huge hill. I pretty much never go that way right out the door, to be honest- just too daunting, and I like to ease into things. The few times I've done it, I either walked it as a warmup, or ran a few minutes the other direction before tackling the hill. It's mostly psychological, I know, but you know what they say: running is 90% mental, and the rest is all in your head!I have a silly what would you do type of question. It's running related. I would walk a good pace up that first 1/4-1/2 mile stretch of hill and call that my warm-up! |

LOVE the quote, TammyTurtle! (And all too true, too!) When I lived in Pasadena for a month a couple of summers ago, my choices for a run were straight up or straight down-- so I usually walked up for a while before breaking into my run gradually in order to tackle those foothills more smoothly. Certainly was a change from the pancake-flat terrain around here...a challenge, but I enjoyed it! |

Extreme Veteran 746 | Subject: RE: HILDEKQ'S Magnificently Motivational Mentor Group - CLOSED!!!! Hi Janet. Don't worry about the 13/13 AG thing - someone has to be that person and there's nothing wrong with being a BOPer. And congrats on being faster than you expected Andrea - depending on the length of the drive way you could basically use that for a warm up - I'm not even doing warm ups for my stuff right now - then again I'm walking mainly flat roads. As for you you could probably use the 1/4 mile to the main rd/start of the hill as your warm up or run down hill as your warm up - maybe do 3/4 - to the main road then down (or vice versa) and then do the hills. I was doing my hill training around the uni I was at for the last 2 years (changed this year to one that is in a pancake flat area) and would end up doing my warm up straight up a gradual hill from the station before tacking the major ones - generally did a route that went up and down with the monster one at the end - only got to the point where I could run up some toward the end of my last run/walk plan. I'll probably start using the overpass or bike path for my hills now but I'm not totally sure. I would like to actually get to a point where I can bike on the bike path though - right now (or as of when I last tried it) it's too hilly.
