I got some bad news at work on Monday... I got fired for the first time in my life. I didn't do anything wrong (you're gonna have to trust me on this) just ran into two issues - a new boss who had made a major screw up three months ago that I called her out for and two parents with deep pockets that didn't like my style of not tolerating bad behavior in my English class. The fact that I was the highest paid tutor at the school didn't help either.

So now I'm fighting to keep an upbeat attitude and to resist the urge to eat a house. I'm proud to report that I weighed in today and I was under 220 for the first time since I feel off the wagon in December. I also had a good midday run (why workout at 4:30am when you don't have to?) yesterday. Today, I'm going to go to my friends brewery for lunch which will be nice because I haven't haven't visited often because I've been so busy and to burn off the calories I intend to get in a nice ride on the trainer while watching a good movie on TV.

Dave - sonofabitch.... Sorry to hear about this. On the positive side it does get you out of the situation there which wasn't the best place to be. Let them have their screwed up mess on their own.

A positive story - a good friend of mine is a troubled youth teacher. He worked at Cape Cod Collaborative for years, made huge strides with the kids, added positive programs, was well liked by (nearly) everyone... Then a new director comes along and doesn't like his style, and takes a liking to the one person that doesn't like my friend. Well, he got fired. No sooner did that happen another 25% of the staff left. He went on to work in New Bedford with the real gang bangers, his principal got promoted to principal of a Middle School, and Matt took over as principal there. So ultimately a politically based firing turned into a huge positive for his career.

For the most part my training has been running 3x a week along with physical therapy for my shoulder (pinched nerve). The shoulder is doing 85-90% better so I plan on adding swimming and biking back in soon.

Work is keeping me pretty busy so I haven't been able to keep up with everyone here. Looks like there is lots of great activity, keep it up!

Way to go Mark!!

Hi All - again!

I'm back after another month of absence. Just lots of traveling which I didn't let interfere with my training!

I'm still mostly run focused until my HM with Dave Q on March 20th. I did the Enchanted 10k at Disney Princess half marathon weekend last Saturday- in a skirt (no lie!) and at one point got passed by a guy dressed as the Little Mermaid, fish scale tights and red wig and all. So much fun. The best part was I stopped for a pic on the course with Pinocchio and Jiminy Cricket, and STILL managed to PR by 3 minutes. After eating poorly all week at Disney. Good times!

I had my first swim since August last night, signed up for an adult swim stroke clinic at the Y. I figured it would be pretty empty but we ended up with like 16 of us, about half in the local tri club (who are generally snobbish about their group) and the other half sprint distance types like myself. I am a terrible swimmer as some of you know, but it felt so good to be back in the pool. I only did like 800 yds in the hour, because there was a lot of instruction for some of the newer swimmers. I think I'll swim next week with the 'big boys' until I get wiped out then change lanes to the slow crowd.

Now I just need to get the bike sorted and get back on two wheels and I'll be back in the swing.

Hope everyone is feeling better and everyone's family too!

Oh and on the brewing front, I'm going to do a Fat Tire clone on Saturday after my long run (11 miles scheduled). I've got some American Ale yeast instead of the recommended stuff, to get away from the slight belgian-y flavor I don't like about that beer but retain the malt character which I LOVE. Should be fun! It'll be my first experience doing a yeast starter so wish me luck.

Nicole, don´t even think about it, go for it!!
Beware of the "bad" influence from this group.... I asked them few months ago, the N+1 equation by Thor helped me to get my beauuutiful QR tri-bike (without them I would be still thinking about it....)

Jenn, hope the kid gets better (so you also get into training, but prioriities are clear)

60' crazy spinning class today

Big boy was feeling better yesterday ....well enough he had a burrito for lunch and spaghetti for dinner. Thus far he's the only one - hopefully it stays that way!!

I did manage to get my swim and bike in yesterday.
I'm nerding out on the swim - our pool is a 25 yard pool and plans usually says "do __ number of yards/meters" using them interchangeably. As distances increase the difference between the two becomes a fair amount so I'm now adding yardage in to make my workouts equal the workout in meters.
On the bike I was slated for 45 minutes at 100+ rpm. This is hard for me for that long but I managed to average 99 rpm so I'm happy with that.

I've been MIA for a few weeks, and I wish it was for a good reason like travel, work, or something. Instead, I just completely fell off the wagon and haven't worked out at all for 2 weeks, and my weight has started creeping back up. I just haven't felt super motivated to jump on here with the rest of you who aren't being lazy.

So I've gone ahead and signed up for a couple of races to serve as hard deadlines to get my act together. DQ (and anyone else in MA) I'm registered for the NE Season Opener in May; we should try to meet up before or after the race.

And I'll be joining my wife in giving up booze and sugar through March to try and get the weight back under control. Hopefully that doesn't mean I need to find a different mentor group!

I can't remember if I told you guys this last year, but I tried Heady Topper (friends of friends are equally obsessed with it and drive store to store on Tuesdays collecting cases when they are up there). I really loved it! I had two different kinds and I can't remember what they were, but I thought of you when I was drinking them!

I didn't make it on a run yesterday :-/ I chose sleeping in, which I think was much needed. My body is still wondering what I'm doing to it this week Going to the gym this evening for a workout and plan to run there. Hope to run home too, but we will see just how much my body allows that after one of these workouts...

I plan to get at least one run in this weekend though, and am going to swim tomorrow between swim lessons. I will let you know how it goes!

Don't worry! I gave up beer for lent and they still let me in here

Good luck getting your motivation back! Sounds like you are taking the right steps and have a supportive wife to help motivate you as well. We've all been lacking motivation, but you will come back from it!

Dennis, nothing works better for me to get back into training and recover motivation than (apart from this group) signing up for a race: once I pay the entry fee I am inspired!! It has been extremely rate not to show up in a race once I am registered.

Right now I'm following the "Be Iron Fit" plan - using the competitive/intermediate plan (book). They're the same through the first 20 weeks of training then change up slightly going into the final 10 week peak phase. If I can work the competitive program in time-wise I'll do it, otherwise I'll stick with the intermediate plan. I'm keeping it loose enough to fit in hill repeats and things like that since this course is looking to be quite hilly. My hope is to go to Mont Tremblant in early June before the kids get out of school and ride a loop of the course so I can make adjustments in my training from there.
I'd love to get a coach but I just don't have the funds right now (I don't really know how much coaches charge) - especially if I want to get race wheels or a power meter. Part of me says I should work on the engine first and get the frills later but Alan mentioned a while ago that it makes no sense to have a tri bike without aero wheels - which makes sense to me.....just waiting for those Flo's to go on sale... hahaha

Wanting to get my hour run in today but am having a squirrely stomach and wondering if I'm getting what my son had.
Thinking about going to the gym to use the treadmill so I have quick and easy access to facilities should I need them.... zoinks.
The thermometer says it's 21F out right now...with a "feels like" temp of 1F. Yesterday it was 53 and pouring rain. Overnight it changed to snow and now there's a couple of nuisance inches of snow on the ground. Crazy weather this year up here.

Git 'er done, Dennis!!!
I work best/most consistently when I have a plan out in front of me. Now that you've signed up for some races, see if there's a plan to follow for one of them or at least a winter maintenance plan or something. Consistency is key. Find a time of day that works best for you and do it. Put your clothes out the night before, water bottles filled and in the fridge, etc - once you get going you will continue. The hardest part for me is just getting out of bed.

I find going with small workouts first helps me. Plan a 10-15 minute run/bike or swim. Make them easily achievable and not a chore. Slowly up the time/distance once you get in the groovel

I sucked it up, Buttercup, and did my hour run outside very bundled up. I decided the cold would be better to run in with a fickle belly.. I had to take it slow - icy - but was just shy of 6 miles. When I got home the pup was looking at me with those eyes so out I went again for another mile loop. She was cooking until we got to her "sniffing stretch" where she stops every 10 feet to inspect who was there. Happy I got it in.

Been in Vegas all week for a conference. Managed to get in a run every morning until today, when I opted for yoga (#80). My calves were Rock hard and I needed to stretch!! Plus, I have my first race of the season this Sunday!!! Indoor Tri (10:20:15 and calculated by points based on distance during the time interval). I won my division last year, so I'm hoping to improve on my distances from last year and win again!!

Congrats on getting back going Dennis!

Mark that is a great HM time nice one!

Jenn good to hear your sone is fine and for now no one else affected. Hope it stays that way.

Dave I love the memory lane idea. I am visiting the states in a few months and it made me plan on mapping out something similar by my dad's house. Should be fun!

This week started well for me Monday thru Thursday then Thursday night I wrenched my back pretty good. It doesn't take much for me I've hd some ongoing issues. Sucks to miss my swim Friday and thus far my bike Saturday. It seems to be getting a bit better though and he need for advil is lessening so I'm hoping maybe to swim and bike Sunday to catch up if I wake up feeling ok. Anyway have a great weekend all. Nice job.

I have been talking to Dave for a while about this but figured it was time to share. My grandmother had to be hospitalized in Jan. I spend everyday with her growing up and even lived with her for a few months after college. That is the reason I cancelled my Dopey race. She is 94 and was not expected to last a week, but being a Sicilian she held on until last night. I had missed my morning workout and left work early to get in my hour bike ride. On the way home my mom called and told me that grandma didn't have long left. I had planned on going to see her the next day and thought I would make it so I went home and got in my ride. I had just made dinner when my mom called and told me that she had passed away.

I was suppose to work today and planned on it. I got up at 0220 to get my run in, and while running decided I needed the day. My workouts for the week are done, although I may do something tomorrow just to clear my head.

It's no excuse but I felt like I owed y'all an explanation as to why I have been so bad at getting on here especially after offering to help Dave with mentoring. I promise I will do better moving forward. My goals for next week are to not miss a planned workout (from iron fit) and to get in 3 stretching sessions.

Sorry to hear about your grandma, Scott - 94 years full of life is really impressive (mediterrenan diet and also sure that she moved much more than we do on a daily basis).

Today freezing winds with rain, so 100 min bike in the gym, missed the 15 min brick run, still lazy about bricks...

Scott- I'm sorry about your grandmother! Sounds like a good idea to take a day off.

So, I test rode the new bike on Friday and put down a down payment. I should have it next week. Then I can learn how to use a dropper seat post. It's 7 pounds lighter than my current bike. Hopefully that will help me with my new nemesis hill this summer.

Hey folks,

Last week was a bit of a write off for me, I was on the road since last Sunday. So no swimming and only one bike ride. I ended up taking Thu and Fri off. Thursday was a 14hr work day, and Friday I was exhausted, multiple time zone changes and 6 days of flying wore me out. I did get in a couple of good runs. I did one easy 45min run, a tempo run in Calgary at 3500ft above sea level (got my altitude training in. LOL) and yesterday I did my longish run 14km in 1:24. Running is starting to come back.

I was hoping to do my 2hr ride outside today, but woke up to a light dusting of snow, and the sound of the salt truck dumping a fresh load of the corrosive crap on the pavement again. I guess it will be a mind-numbing 2hr trainer ride instead.

I started strength training last week, and now I can barely move my arms and shoulders. May have gone a little too hard, Getting old sucks, especially when a TRX workout leaves you aching.

I was hoping to get a new tri bike this year. My local shop has a killer dealer on a new 2011 Specialized Transition Comp. But it looks like my income tax refund won't be as large as I hoped, and my wife is going to have to pay in this year. That free healthcare in Canada doesn't pay for itself you know. So it's another year racing on my 1998 Cannondale MS500.

No big trips away this week, so I hope to hit the pool at least 3 times (6-9000m), and get in 3-4 bike rides, and 3-4 runs.

Hope everyone has a good week

Cheers
Terry
