Yeah before I entered into fatherhood I would have died if you told me I wouldn't have an athletic child.  Now I don't think it would bother me alot.  Upset?  A little at first but if they are happy pursuing other things,  so be it.  Plus if they aren't into what I'm into they will never be able to beat dear old dad.

mr2tony - 2007-09-18 12:17 PM Yeah my brother in law is a sports FREAK and neither of my nephews ever once played any sport. They were in bands and music and not sports. Bummed him out. But hey -- they may not like playing despite what dad and mom say.

That's still a form of competition, and most of the sports you play in school - like football - you can't play all of your life. You can play an instrument until you're practically dead for all practical intents and purposes.

  Running as well....

lvthgme - 2007-09-18 12:24 PM As far as being coached by a parent...I think it depends on the parent and their understanding/experience in the game/coaching...and of course on the relationship with the kid...I know some families where it works well and others it's a bad deal...

True. Playing year-round, often with at least two coaches at a time, I got plenty of coaching and didn't want it following me home. And the way I am (and the way my parents are), I just don't think it would have worked anyway. But others are able to keep things like that separate, and I admire that.

My dad was an assistant coach when I played in Little League. Personally, I'd rather not be a coaches kid.

I will be supportive and involved... but doubt that I'll be a coach. Unless of course they needed someone or they couldn't play, then I'd step up.

LUCKILY this is all YEARS AND YEARS down the road... so I don't need to worry about it for a long time.

It’ll be a few thousand text messages before you have to worry about that.

So true, so true.  My dad coached me in basket ball from 5th-8th grade.  Made for some very bad years after that.  Actually, I still give him a hard time  now (all in jest of course) about how he would single me out on the court.  He finally admitted to it years later (like 5 or something like that) that he realized he was harder on me than the other kids.

Probably why I stopped playing before my junior year in HS and focused on high jumping.  That and picking up his smoking habit (I know, I know.  DUMB!)
