Checking in.  Long day.  I went to Crossfit at 6am this morning and it was the usual killer workout.  I had a short bike ride, about six miles I think, this afternoon.  I haven't uploaded it yet from my Garmin so I don't know for sure.  And then I went and signed up for a series of three swimming lessons.  I had my first lesson tonight.  The teacher was a teenage boy.  Talk about making one feel old.  Anyway, it went fine.  He gave me some pointers on technique and then we did backstroke and breaststroke.  Next week butterfly.  Tomorrow is my usual day to swim and I think I will joint the workout and see how it goes.

I feel so frivolous posting this.  I went to a memorial service this afternoon and then to hear about KOM Kathy's brother just makes all this silly "training" seem so shallow and narcissistic.

You shouldn't feel that it's frivolous at all.  Just like watching our diets and getting enough sleep and performing in our work or as a stay-at-home mom isn't frivolous.  It's what we do.  It's what we do to challenge our minds and our bodies to do better and be better people and to keep us healthy and fit and be around longer and be capable to share time with our families and our friends during the good days and the tough times like now.

Think about all the reasons you do this, why it's important, and it might make you feel better.

For example-- I'm tri-ing for weight loss, but I'm also tri-ing because my father just had another 3 stents put in during a 4-hour surgery last week.  He's doing ok now, but I know this runs in my family, so I know I challenge myself to be heart-healthy and keep some of that at bay for the sake of myself and those close to me.

Of COURSE I do it cause it's fun and I want to look slammin and sexy for my boyfriend, but it's not all selfish and narcisisstic. Innocent

Hiya,

Well I think Im just about to hit back training after the race... I needed the week out from worrying about my plan/schedule mentally more than physically in some ways.

I will not be getting a workout on Saturday (or probably today - Friday my time) so I then have a 3 week build + 1 week taper for the next race which is a 400m/10K/2.5K

Based on the feedback you've all given me so far Im thinking i will do something like this:

- Run/walk a mininmum of 3 times per week (a bit of consistency should go a long way even if its only 20 minutes some days)

- Swim 2-3 times per week mostly helping others out with their stuff (low pressure since this is clearly my strength)

- Ride 3-4 times per week focusing on doing some race specific work: BCR/hills/pace intervals rather than lots of LSD

- Strength 2 per week as normal

Does this sound reasonable?  Am I missing anything? Any ideas on the specifics I need on the bike?

Cat

Sounds great. I'd in time work on one of those runs be a bit longer run.

Hey,

Got a run in today, off for Karate tonight.

On the narcisistic/shallow/selfish thing. Yeah, you know, it is selfish. But I suppose so is eating. Or enjoying life. Selfish is not neccessarily wrong. Sometimes it is neccessary. Shallow and narcissistic I think is more of a subjective point of view. Only you can know if what you do, generally, is shallow or narcissistic.

So, I understand frustation and being in a funk and if you need to wallow in the whole thing feel free, sometimes that is what people need and likely does the body a bit of good, then what are you going to do but wallow for a bit.

But it will pass.

Vegie update:

avocado was a bit soft in my salad so I can't make a fair assessment.  I'd rate it as okay.

Butternut squash fries are awesome, my 13 yr old daughter who HATES squash loved them!

Asthma update:  it sucks.  Had the joy of a CT scan today and no antibiotics until she sees if it's chronic allergy reaction vs infection.

Morning peeps! its 6:15am  and I am still earning Cervelodollars........

Whats on tap today ? I am going for ART on my way home .....cause staying up all night was not painful enough.....then after a bit of sleep I will hit the drainer I guess.

I was thinking about the idea of this tri training as being something that is shallow and selfish.......for me I can honestly say that the benefits to my mind, body and soul that training provides are invaluable. Plain and simple it makes me happy...which in turn makes me a better mother, wife and friend. I am fortunate enough to have a very supportive spouse who is able to see this clearly....and does not mind stepping over the  piles of dirty laundry that I will eventually get to....right after my long run....really......

Today is my rest day so I'm earning my peach with something light....

Tri training is somewhat selfish in that I wind up spending huge amounts of time away from the family training .  Fitting in as much as possible when they're still asleep at dawn helps.  They aren't at all into the race scene so that gets old fast for them.  However. it keeps me healthy which means I'll be around longer with them.

Good morning Team, I am still out there training. My life has been incredibly stressful as of late, which makes it hard to climb out of bed some mornings. Today was a little over 3 mile run, Sat is a planned rest day, but I may do a short bike, to make up for yesterday. I have decided that exercise is really a mental game, I am pretty sure a guy can talk themselves out of anything. I will try to check in more often, I think I need the accountability. Thanks everyone.

Good morning everyone.

Had a great Karate class last night, kicked my , which is always fun. Heading out for my lunch run a little early today.

Going to spend Saturday on the baby's room and tidying the house. We pulled everything out of the baby's room and now it is in our bonus room, tons of books that we haven't opened for years (if we ever did), and other junk. 27 days and counting, crazy, I can't wait. Then we are heading for dinner and play.

Sunday, get up early, have a long run, not really sure how long. I want to go 4 hours, we will see how it goes. Not too hard, just a long slow run. Then I get cupcakes at my parents followed by Karate.

How about everyone else, what are you up to this weekend.

I'm in Lake Tahoe, CA with 4 other women.....our 17th annual girls' ski trip. COLD and snowy!  Skiied hard today, ready to go out to an amazing dinner!  Will need to work it off tomorrow.  I'm calling it both physical and emotional cross-training.

I love Lake Tahoe.  I've got friends there so I am jealous.  I am not that big on cold and I don't ski, so I'm not jealous of that, but the whole "girls getaway thing," yeah, that I am envious.  I've got a couple girlfriends from about 8th grade and every couple years we do a reunion.  We must be due, now that I think about it (and one of the girlfriends lives in Lake Tahoe).  Have fun and enjoy it all.

Checking in. I have been busier than a one-armed paperhanger, as my mom always says.

I went to my swimming lesson on Wednesday night and fully intended to go to my usual swimming on Thursday morning.  I didn't because I was SO SORE.  Primarily my inner thighs.  I am guessing that was from doing a lot of frog kick, but I have done that much before and never suffered from it.  But I think the difference is that because of my Crossfit strength training, I am a lot stronger and thus put a lot more into it and felt it.

My kid swimming teacher also told me that I needed to pull harder, which I did, plus learning how to do backstroke properly and that did in my arms and shoulders.  But I am really excited about it, paradoxically.  I really believe that when I go swim on Tuesday, real swimming, not all drills, and check my time, I will be faster.  Optimism.  That's the key.

No races this weekend.  I had a couple I was contemplating, but I decided that I had done enough this week and will just go for a run today and yoga tomorrow.  I couldn't bike to work yesterday because it was pouring rain.

I haven't done the vegetable challenge yet, but I am going to the grocery store this morning and will come up with something.

I do enjoy reading everyone's posts and wish I was a litle more consistent about checking and.  I wish you all well.

KathyG - 2009-02-04 1:45 PM

TT try to not go all out to start and build into your pace.

It is easier to hit the wall at the end as you get to stop. I do a lot of TT and they hurt plenty but are fun to do none the less.

If you use a HRM or bike computer you can use those for pacing help. For me I know 164 is my max HR on the bike so I'd start in 150s and gradually kick it up a bit more until I was at my limit.

Also key is to warm up well. Be sure to do some hard 90-120" intervals before you start ideally 3 with 3-4 minutes rest as then your legs will be ready to go hard when you start as I recall the TTs are pretty short and you need to be ready to hit it hard to start.

KathyG - 2009-02-04 7:49 PM

Be prepared to be very humbled at TT. Around here it is all men and only a fast women or two. I average 21.5-22 mph and I come in last unless a newbie or a kids shows up.

Thanks for the tips, Kathy... and btw I'm so very humbled just reading your average! I'd be happy if I could do that downhill! Smile Tomorrow will prove to be quite a massacre.

But, I'm reminding myself that I'm a newbie and bike is my weakest so tomorrow is not a race-- it's just me getting a sense of my fitness starting point. (Oh yeah, I'll be telling myself that while peddling for another 10 minutes after everyone else is done!) Oof, I'm starting to hope that other BTers won't be there to cheer me on!

Really, I know it'll be fun no matter what. I'm pretty curious how this Computrainer TT thing works... it sounds like Wii for cycling!

You are an inspiration, DH! I read that and had to make some cupcakes this AM.

I have a co-worker who is having food allergy/intolerance issues and one of the many things that is off her list is dairy, so I was trying to find something I could bake for the office that she could eat since so often people bring things in and she can't have ANY of it! I feel so bad! So, I tried a sort of Depression Era recipe for chocolate cake and made muffins with it - no milk, no eggs and no butter (just flour, water, vanilla, unsweetened cocoa, sugar, white vinegar, baking soda and powder and veg oil... there wasn't salt in the recipe but I added a pinch). It actually came out quite moist and pretty good, but I'll tweak it a little next time and figure out what sort of non-dairy frosting or glaze I could do for em. I did a mix of flours so it wasn't all white, but I'll also have to check that wheat or barley is still ok and I don't have to try to do this with rice and tapioca flours...

And yes, I saved them for AFTER my workout, of course!

I have a similar recipe..did you make holes in the dry ingredients and add the vinegar into it? I haven't made it for 20-25 years but used to make it with my Mom. Maybe I should make some..but I'm on no sugar until March.

I've lost 13 pounds since 12/22 so it is all good. I finally feel I can finish losing weight. My goal is to get to 146 or about 14.5-15.5% body fat. I seem to lose 1-1.5 pounds a week which is great.

We'll have to swap recipes... have you tried agave as a sugar substitute?  Or is that off limits, too?  I've never tried it, but want to experiment with something other than refined white stuff.

Well I decided against the long run. Went for a short spin instead. Legs were quite sore from last week. Think it was the right decision.

MMMMMM, now off to my parents house.....cupcakes.
