How do I increase my swimming speed?  I feel so slow in the water, and my general improvement doesn't seem to matter as I think I've been maintaining 2:00 for 100 yards.  What to do?

I've asked a couple of swimmers I work with the very same question, because I'm turtle slow. One suggested doing drills instead of swimming laps (and the coach for my tri group is a big fan of drills instead of laps also). My co-worker suggested 1 minute drills, where you swim as fast as possible the length of the pool (I'm slow, so maybe you to a full up and back lap). Then rest until the minute is up. Repeat. So basically every lap you swim, you're sprinting. With rest breaks in between.

I need to take a moment and complain about physical therapy. I truly enjoy my physical therapist - she's very nice and also training for a triathlon sprint right now. But I REALLY wish it was easier to diagnose problems. I've gone from piriformis, to bulging disc in my spine causing sciatica, to today's less threatening sounding tight hip muscles. So every 2 hours I get to do stretches that cause bursts of humor in my co-workers, and return Friday with hopefully not another different diagnosis.

I truly don't blame her, I've learned through other medical conditions how many ailments are diagnosed because they're "not this" so it must be "that" - just like on House but less gross. Does not inspire confidence. I wish we came with diagnostic computers. Like in my car.

Complaint over, it's time to stretch.

Yeah - I went to see the ortho today for a follow up of the ITBS, and I asked Dr. Hottie how he got to be such a good swimmer (I saw him in my last mini-sprint and he's being tri-ing for 12 years - he swims like a fish).  He said drills.  Lots of drills.  He started out unable to do a full lap, and with the drills from Total Immersion, he got to where he is today.  So drills + playing 'golf'... I'll give it a shot tonight!

Well, tight hip muscles sounds much better than the others...and at least you're giving your co-workers some entertainment to pass the time!  I hope that it's figured out and you're healed soon!!

That's frustrating.  Did you see a sports medicine doctor before you started going to the physical therapist?  That might be a good step to helping you get a more definitive diagnosis.

Have you ever had a stroke analysis done? Underwater video is very illuminating, especially if you have a pro to critique it and offer suggestions for changes. Beyond that, swim and swim some more. What kinds of sets and distances are you doing?

I've jsut had our tri coach take a look at my stoke - she said everything looked good except I don't have high elbows... maybe I will get an underwater video done.  And, I know i should be doing them, but no drills.....I just swim....and keep swimming....

The fingertip drag is a good drill for working on this and doesn't feel too much like doing drills. I generally don't do drill. And I never do kick sets. My kick provides no propulsion but I'm OK with that.

Life is going to be a bit more complicated for the next week or so...

I was in a fender bender this morning...no one was hurt, but my car needs a little work.

Estimated at a week of work...There goes my tax refund. Fortunately it is just a deductible.

I am looking into bus schedules and such...it is a bummer that my multiple commutes are complicated.

About swimming speed..
just putting in the yardage isn't going to make you faster...

you need to get in some speed work and drills too.

I am in the same boat.

Good question!  Everyone will always have different opions... but have you checked out the thread "how to swim faster" in the triathalon talk forum.  Some more conflicting opinions there..... but I found it an interesting read!

Just wanted to let everyone know I completed my 1st TRI yesterday!!! I finished, had a smile on my face, and even got an award! Check out my page if you'd like! I am totally hooked now and am planning on completing an OLY Tri in October!

Apologies for not being around lately, but congrats on a new boyfriend! That's always exciting. And I'm sorry to hear about your accident, Melissa. Glad no one was hurt. Jenna, I hope they're able to find out what's really wrong with you. I have had similar problems with doctors & misdiagnosis before so I understand how frustrating it is. Kim, hope you're knee keeps healing. And to everyone else, keep working hard and you can accomplish amazing things!

Can you see my results on my page? After I put everything in it asked if I wanted to make it public...didn't know what that meant, if EVERYONE on BT could see it or just my friends. Any thoughts?

I am not worried about the car deal...

I am actually enjoying being without it.  I am doing a lot more biking in combination with buses.  My friend bought me an awesome pannier as an early birthday gift. I am planning on swinging by a used bike store later today to pick up a rack.

My front bumper had a bit of damage anyway, getting it replaced now with insurance costs less than paying to replace it on my own.

Also...In my general conversation with my insurance agent I mentioned that I am working on a horticulture degree.  It turns out that he is best friends with a very well connected local Horticulture professional and volunteered to get me in touch with him.  He manages some very prestigious estates in my area.

All in all, there are a lot more positives than negatives coming out of my little fender bender.

I can see your page, but not the race results. I don't know a way of having your friends view the race report without making it public for the entire internet world.  If you don't want to do that I suggest that you just paste the text from your RR into your log.

Congrats on finishing your first tri!

Unless you make it public, only you can see it.  There's no distinction for friends and everyone on BT on race reports, just public and private.

Boo, okay well maybe I'll modify it a bit and make it public. Seems like no one else has posted anything from that race yet.
