Pro ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() this morning was suppose to be a 2050 yd swim and a 6.8 mile run, but by the end of the swim, I just didn't feel right. I though about trying to make it a mental toughness run, but even that seemed like a bad idea, so I went home, everyone was still asleep and I made me breakfast. Nice peaceful, quiet breakfast.
Only thing I can think of that went differently than other time I have done this type of workout was that I was having trouble with my goggles early, and I cinched them up really tight. Maybe too tight, cause my head just never felt clear after I took them off, maybe my body was telling me to rest some, who knows!!
I am planning on just forgetting this run workout, missing one workout will not kill me or set me back. |

New user![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() got in some weight lifting, a 2.5 mile bonus run not on my plan, and a 30 minute mountain bike ride. It's so much easier to run being on summer break from teaching! I have a 45 minute swim coming up in an hour and a half (as soon as it gets light out). |

Expert ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() OK Mike, you're up!!!!! It's SHOWTIME. You have a solid plan and are ready to go. We will be waiting to hear how it goes! Sorry to hear about a couple of not so great workouts Samantha and Jford. Happens to everyone, but it's not fun when it does. Sometimes with an apparent reason and sometimes not. One of my favorite scriptures is "I praise you because I am fearfully and wonderfully made; your works are wonderful, I know that full well." (Ps 139:14) Having one body system that I have to actively attempt to manage (insulin) has put me very in touch with that, and so has triathlon training. Speaking of fearful and wonderful, that describes my swim last night at the city pool. Wonderful because it was outside, cost $2, only about a mile from home, and my sinuses are still open this morning. Fearful because there were only 2 lanes roped off for lap swimming and various kiddos would randomly pop into them. None of the adults seemed to know how to lap swim either and would also appear haphazardly in the lanes. So I made the best I could out of it, and practiced sighting so as not to plow into anyone. 4 lifeguards on deck, and none of them did anything to try to encourage the little fishies to move into the other 4/5ths of the pool that was avaialble to them. Getting fitted on new bike this afternoon. Can you guess what I'll be doing this weekend?

Extreme Veteran ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Rides: just wondering what everyones rides are like in terms or elevation gain. I have 2 loops that I usually take. Loop 1: 13 mi has gain of +860. Loop 2: 23 mi has gain of +940. My avg speed on these are 14 ish. Went a new route which was much flatter ride. Which improved (luckily) my avg speed to 15+ and even a 16 mph. Yay for that!!! |

Veteran ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Thanks Elena! I hear ya on the frustration thing. Ther is so much to think about especially when you are juggling kids, husband and so many other things. One day at a time! Get in what you can when you can. Carol- great news on the pool not clogging you up. Crazy way to practice sighting :-). There is a song and I don't remember who sings it, but it the words are fitting for you. "I want to ride my bicycle. I want to ride my bike." |

Elite ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Larry, training is looking solid. Get in 1 more long bike (56+) and 1-2 more runs over 11 miles and you are ready for your HIM! James good call on calling it a day and just resting the rest of the day. The plans look great on paper, but your bodies do not always agree with the exact paper workouts. Just yesterday I had a 9 mile run and 25 mile bike planned. I was dead flat on the run after a crappy run 2 days earlier, so I cut it short at 3 miles and skipped the bike. I will see how today's fatigue level is and adjust accordingly. This is called listening to your body. Body needs rest, ya get some rest rather than drag crappy workouts out for weeks. Try to not skip long run/bike or swim in a week though, give up something smaller. The longer workouts are key for building that long endurance base for the races, the shorter workouts just help you hold fitness all week until you tack on a bit more. For me today I started with a 3000 yard swim. The first 1000 was in 18:33 so 1:52/100 ish pace. I then did 500 in 9:01 (1:49/100). And then a bunch of 100s at 1:47/100. Swim felt good, but when did 3000 yards get so long. So to answer someones question, Samantha's maybe, yes the swim is feeling better my longer sets of 1000 yards or more are currently 4-5 seconds faster than May and I think I can probably get another 3 seconds in the next couple months. What is nice is that with the higher elbow pull, my right shoulder has not been bugging me as much. I still need to be able to hold the faster paces longer, but that will take time. Just happy to have all of my sets faster than 2:00/100 for the past 2 weeks. So now to wait and recover a bit from the swim and have a stronger wind or go out now and be beat but have less wind?

Master ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() HIM update. Im an official DNF. Bike crash at mile 35. Im ok, but bike is dead (front fork broke off at head tube due to collision with a rock). VERY disappointed. Swim was 39 min in choppy water, buke was dead on pace for 3 hrs (split was 1:30 on the nose). Was feeling FANTASTIC. Grrrrrr. More later. This sucks.... Now hanging cheering on other BT racers... |

Elite ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Mike sorry about the crash, been there done that. My last crash came with a new collarbone.. plate. Glad your body is fine. You can talk with Carol about bike shopping ... Well at least you now know what fitness you need for a HIM. Maybe you can catch a late season HIM in a month or 2 and give it a 2nd go. 77 mile bike 3 mile brick run today for me, pretty much spent. Off to take kids to the town pool and let them frolic.

Master ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Thanks, everyone. Bummer of a day, but now that I'm home, showered, and starting to feel a bit sore from it all (temped w/ a cold beer) I have a couple quick thoughts 1. The bike shop sponsor of the race just happens to be the place I bought my bike. When I arrived back at the race site, I showed them what happened, and after a brief conference, they're going to get me a warranty replacement bike in the next few days. Awesome! 2. I've already started looking for another HIM. I'm going to do this. Its no longer a race - its a quest. 3. I have a sprint coming up next sunday. I'm taking all my frustration out on that course as soon as the gun goes off. 4. If anything today was a big confidence booster. I feel I had a good swim, but know I can do better. Bike was great; pacing, nutrition, gearing. It all worked awesome, at least up to the point where I crashed and DNF'ed. At least I had a good work out today. |

Veteran ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Mike- score on the bike!! Majorly cool and could not have been planned better! LOve your attitude and Perspective- not easy to have on a day like today. Looking forward to your future race and hearing about your new bike! Don't forget to give your body time so you know all of you is okay. PR'd 5k today by a minute, then swam 2000 in 48. Swim was a little slower than I thought it would be, but considering I haven't swam much letting my shoulder rest can't comPlain. Shoulders are sore but not injury sore; muscle sore. Larry- 3 am really?!? Way to be dedicated and love your family time! Hope they frolic till their hearts are content. |

New user![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Samantha, great job on the 5K. Mike, bummer about the crash, but I absolutely love your resilient attitude. You'll hammer the next one. I got 13.1 miles in by 7 a.m. then it was home, shower, hour drive, and 4 baseball tournament games for my 8 year old, and 12 year old. I finally found a way to calm my hyper 8 year old down; have him play two games at catcher in 95 degree heat. |

Veteran ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Mike - That sucks!! I like that you are chalking it up as a learning experience, confidence booster and taking that possibly negative energy and using it for your next race. Also not breaking any bones and getting a new bike out of the deal, well that is good karma. Read the race report - sounds like you were having a very solid race going (not surprising since you were soo ready!) Looking forward to hear what you're gonna do next! Carol - did I miss new bike pics somewhere? Pics or it didn't happen! I'm with samantha in the chorus - "I want to ride my bicycle!" was that song by Queen? |

Elite ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Nice bike ride, the long rides are getting longer. 17 mile run for me today on tired legs before church, long but done. Myabe swim this afternoon we see how things go. This is also our 23rd anyversary so we see not sure what the afternoon looks like yet. Hope our fallen soldier is not feeling too beat up today. You will get it next time. It really doesn't take much of a distraction to miss a rock, roadkill, board or whatever in the road when in aero. Stay safe out there gang. |

Master ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() I'm alive, and feeling mostly OK. A couple small aches here and there, and my shin looks far worse than it is. Looking at other races and will sign up for some in the next 24 hours, including another HIM. I am already registered for the local sprint a week from today. Hope I have a bike! |

New user![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() I do an hour ride bike ride weekly as part of my training. My best distance covered before today was 17.6 miles. Today it was 19.1. It was the best bike ride of my life, in performance and how I felt!! |
